Reshafting Mx 23's

Hi All,

Technical question - I'm reshafting Mx-23 irons (6-pw) from graphite (.370) to steel (dynalite gold SL R300 parallels). I've already pulled the graphite shafts and I'm just waiting for the steel shafts to arrive, but before I start doing any work.....

 

1. the heads weight (from 6-p in grams)...275, 273, 284, 288, 307. I know they are not consistent 7 gram increments and are slighty heavier than the 'norm'(there were also weight plugs in the graphite shafts as well)...Are they heavier because the heads were in graphite shafts?

2. the hosel depth is 1 1/8 inches...is this also 'normal' or is it deeper than most irons? If it is deepre, do I need to tip trim less so it plays the flex OR does it not matter?

3. I play my irons really short compared to modern standard (6 iron at 37 1/8)...do I need to tip trim less because I play to a shorter length so it will play to flex OR once again does it not have a factor.

So if you're going from graphite to steel, do not tip trim the steel shafts. Rough up the shaft tips, test fit your ferrules, add any weight you wish to adjust swing weight (or not) and then glue them up. After drying, butt trim to length and install grips. Don't over-think it.

If you're worried about swing weight, you should dry fit the components and check the swing weight. Find a similar weighted grip to the one you will use and slice it length-wise. Use that for your dry-fitting to find out what swing weight you'll wind up with. That also means that you'll have to butt-trim the shafts before you glue them up but it's not that big of a deal.

Measure twice and cut once! And have fun.

I guess i am over thinking it in terms of the hosel length and tip trim.....but I do have to tip trim = parallel steel shafts
I was all over the sanding, and ferrules are only cosmetic right? so no biggy there.

Maybe someone else can give you different direction. I've installed .370 shafts in the past and did not have to tip trim.

If you're working with new untrimmed shafts, you should check with True Temper (TT) on the recommended trimmings for these. TT parallel tips are usually tip trimmed a certain amount for each club in the set to maintain the designed flex. Usually this would be 2.5 inches for the #6 and half inch additionally to the #9 iron and the same amount for the W. An additional adjustment may be suggested for the shorter playing length and for the heavier head.

TT usually designs their shafts for a 1 inch Bottom of Bore to Ground line Measurement (BBGM). A MX-25 that I measured had a hosel length of about 2 1/8 inch and a bore depth of about 1 1/8", so this would be a BBGM of 1" which would be right on spec.

Haven't personally work with this specific shaft, nor have I researched the adjustment suggested for a slightly shorter overall length or heavy head for this shaft. Don't know the balance point of this shaft so can't comment on swingweight issues. Also have not measured a MX-23 for the BBGM.

This sounded more like it in terms of tip trim - I thought it was a little 'off' not to tip trim parallel shafts (I did check the TT instructions)
The BBGM is the same measure as the mx 23
I'll wait for SW info
I didn't realize how 'techinical' it can become in making your irons 'right on spec' I also see how 'not' techincal it can be if you simply install without all the specifics. Seeing as how most golfers can not tell the small differences in SW, length, etc,... Makes me apprciate Joe Know's blueprint topic!
