Trouble drawing the ball

Recommended Posts

I have been working on my swing lately, trying to feel more on top of the ball, which has really helped me to minimize my worst miss, which was a big hook. I have brought the ball flight down some but now I am having trouble hitting a draw. If I do hit one it starts on line but then goes left, I can't seem to make the ball start to the right, or if it does it goes sky high which I'm not looking for. I have tried to get my path to go out more through impact but that seems to make me block it or hit it off the heel more than anything. I know the clubface needs to be right of target at impact for this to happen but when I aim it more right I always seem to just hit a straight push. Any suggestions on how to get the path more out but still hit it solidly?

What is your objection to lining up to the right of the flag, having it start on that line, and end up next to the cup?
[/quote]

I don't have a huge problem with it, the issue is I can't reliably do it. Most of the time I pull it left of my starting line even if I do aim right. I don't want to just keep aiming further and further right, I would rather figure out what the issue is. I figure I'm getting it closed too quickly but I don't seem to have any issues fading the ball.

I figure you're trying to hard with your hands. Many think you have to have a pronounced rolling of the hands to hit a draw. This is completely wrong. All you need is to have the face SLIGHTLY closed and the clubpath slightly right of your target. Don't over-do it.

Closing the feet and shoulders can help your draw but firm up the left hand grip pressure and lighten up the right hand grip pressure, combined with hitting from the inside and avoiding the tendency to tighten the right hand on the downswing will produce a nice draw. Also, move the ball up just a tad towards the left foot but not at the toe.
Remember the club head must be allowed to release to turn close over the ball which imparts the right to left spin.
Hope this helps.

Depends on what you mean by closed...........closed to the swing path or closed to the target line? If you are closed to the target line that ball is starting left of the target and then going further left, not good. If it is closed to the swing path, then yes, this is correct. If he wants the ball to start right of the target and draw back to the target, then the face must be open to the target with a swing path slightly further to the right then the face. In this case the ball starts right and draws back to the target.

OP - I'm trying to do the same thing. It's mentally hard to open the face and swing more open to get that draw without manipulating your hands to try not to hit the ball to the right. Just trust the ball flight laws and your swing, it really does work. Sounds like you are trying unconsiously to save the ball from going right (open club face), hence the ball goes right : ) Take your practice time on the range and try to way over do the draw. Attempt to hit some huge draws starting way right and going way left, this will help you get the feeling of what needs to be done, then adjust from there, and practice controlling the draw.

That's going to promote a more OTT move than what you had before, so you'll have to live with not push drawing it if you focus on swinging like that. I used to have the same swing thought and the only way I could build a consistent draw was by thinking about hitting it off the toe. That'll keep you more inside on the downswing, but be careful not to get stuck. That's just anecdotal crap though; it may work but it probably won't produce a mechanically sound swing.

Closed in relation to your swing path, of course. Sorry for any confusion, but when setting up to work a shot to an intended target, the ONLY purpose that final target serves is the place where the shot should come to rest. The whole point of working a shot is to curve it around some obstruction and land it nearer the target. Complicating the setup by giving options like "open to the target line but closed to your swing path" serves no purpose at all. Perhaps I'm taking something for granted, but I would think ANYONE playing golf at ANY level would already know that they have to have the clubface pointing to the right of a target when they are planning to draw the ball to the target. The process of learning to control the curvature of your shots is a step by step process. First you need to see how face angle adjustments effect your shot when you are aligned with your final target. With your stance aligned to your final target, hit several shots while closing the clubface a little. After each 7 or so shots, close it a little more and see how that effectes the shot. You will learn very quickly how much you need to adjust the clubface to get the curvature you want. Then, do the same thing opening the clubface. After this, you should know how much adjustment is required for 10yds, 20yds etc. Now, to work the ball to the target, just setup with the clubface angled the proper amount and then align your stance with another target that many yds to the right or left of your final target and swing away.

Speaking of another target, that is something that will help you control your draws and fades. Sure, your final target is where you really want the ball to go, but if you focus on it, you will tend to over-work the ball. Instead, actually aim at another chosen target that is along your predicted original flight line. I usually choose a specific tree (seems to be a lot of those around) and I want to launch the ball directly at it and then have the ball fade or draw to the flag, specific part of the green or final target in the fairway.
