My 910D3 isn't any longer than my RBZ 3 wood

I have a new shaft ordered for my 9 degree 910D3 since the 'Ilima is clearly causing too much spin and there isn't enough roll. Last night I was hitting balls with my RBZ 15 degree 3 woods and they were bounding past the spot where my driver was putting the ball. A lot more roll. With the 910D3 the ball carries but then just stops. I am tempted to just leave the driver in the bag this weekend and use the 3 wood. I'll put the new ahina shaft in the 910D3 when it arrives on Friday but if that doesn't work what would people suggest? Getting an RBZ driver? - Nevin

The right shaft deffenitly helps. I went from 255 to 268 carry with a shaft change. And more roll.

What fitters have told me is that the shaft will at best make a few hundred rpm difference. If that's true and you're getting no roll, it sounds like you might be either hitting it too high or hitting down on the ball.

Do you really want a lot of roll from a FW?

I suspect it is the 'ilima shaft as I usually hit the ball pretty solid. I'm not hitting pop-ups or anything. I'll report back what I find with the Ahina. I originally got the 'ilima at a Titleist demo last year cause it felt good to me but it is clearly the most spinny of the stock Titleist shafts. - Nevin

I would think its the shaft as well. I was having the same issue where I was hitting my rbz 3w the same or long than my driver. Since I had a bunch of shafts sitting around for my rbz driver I took out the stock shaft and threw in my HD6 from my supertri tp and I gained 15 yards carry and a bit off roll out (not much though) but there is now a decent gap between my driver and 3w.

I agree, it is most likely the shaft.
I play the 910D3 and the TM RBZ Tour 3 wood and off the tee the driver is at least 20 yards longer.

This. Though the Ahina will feel a lot different too. That could be good or bad. Did you order the Titleist Ahina, or the real one? Just curious.

I never understood the whole distance deal with the RBZ. If I hit my fairway much further (G20 4 wood) I'd be over some par 5's. Plus the added loft is much easier off the deck. Louis found a way to hit it TOO long with his RBZ at the masters.

I would think that people don't give a shaft change enough credit.. I know it's extreme but some say that you won't drastically change spin rates with just a shaft... I play a WB 73X in my driver, if you handed me a BB 73X I would be able to play it all day no problem, a little more spin and a bit higher but no problem.

Hand me a RIP 80-X and I'll be hitting lower than low.

Put a PX 5.5 in my driver and I'm ballooning it I bet..


Shafts have a TON to do with it, flex and weight, AND profile.

To OP - how far are you hitting your RBZ 3 wd?

If over 260 and straight, you don't need a driver

I changed from the kai'li 65 yesterday to the Ahina. It's helped some but IMO loft matters more. I recently purchased a 10.5 titleist d2 and love the look, set up and feel but my recent swing change has made my driver fitting less applicable (the fitting revealed problems I am successfully mitigating) and it's higher, and more spin than I prefer. As a lefty, my setting is now A-4.

The RBZ is 1/2" longer than a standard 3 wood. How much distance do you think this extra 1/2" gives?

Probably an extra club length, if you can hit it in the sweet spot. Keep in mind that the OP's driver at 45 inches is still longer and should deliver a longer hit.

I sometimes hit my 3 wood pretty much just as far as my driver.

It all depends on how pure the contact is and the trajectory of the two shots.
