South Houston Affordable Golf Clubs

Interested in potentially joining an affordable golf club in south houston. (i live in west U). I play 4-6 times per month

 

I mainly care about:

 

Course

Practice facilities

Cost (preferably ~200-400/month)

 

I know wildcat is an option at 300/month which i like because it has 2 courses and pretty good practice facilities, and is easily accessible for me but i think it limits weekend and holiday golf to after 11AM, if it weren't for that it'd be perfect.

 

Any other recommendations?

There's not a whole lot of clubs in your area that are affordable. Your best bet may be Wildcat or just make trips to public courses. Anything that's not 100% private is going to be busy weekends and holiday. Even private can get busy those days. Just pick some out and go talk to them. Go talk to Westwood Golf Club not far from you by HBU. It's in the ghetto but is ok once inside the gate. Nice small private club, nice people and they will give you a free round.

This might be a stretch on distance but Magnolia Creek in League City is an awesome links course. Three nine's, large chipping area, large putting green and another short shot 100 yards and in practice area. They are part of Cannongate so when you join you can play Mag Creek, South Shore Harbour, Panther Trails and The Oaks in the Woodlands, and Lake Windcrest. I have been a member there for almost a year now. They have several membership packages as well.

Depending on your age a junior membership at Braeburn might be the closest option. Initiation is around $2500 and monthly dues are somewhere around $400 if I remember correctly. That club probably gets pricey though if you are not under the age of 35 as far as the initiation goes. Also, last time I checked (over a year ago) there was around a 6 month waitlist for a junior membership because there is a limited amount of them.

Just curious, but any idea what the memberships at Westwood GC run? Initiation fees and monthly dues?

I don't have the info sheet they gave me any longer. But from what I remember it was $25K initiation and $600/MO for the standard membership. It's not the cheapest or best deal in town, but it is 100% private with no reciprocal agreement with other clubs (keeps number of people on course minimal) and it's close to those who live in the west loop area. It's expensive, but given land in the city is more expensive it's understandable to some degree. I have a membership out in the Woodlands but live in the Memorial area. I really like my club, but it's not convenient at all. Westwood is one of the very few "affordable" 100% private clubs near the west loop area. When I talked to Westwood they offered me a 6 month trial membership where you pay dues only. It was not a bad offer and I probably should have done it. I may look into them again being that it's 10 minutes from my house instead of 45 minutes.

Again don't know your age but I think initiation is only $3500 or so if you are under the age of 35. Pretty reasonably priced for a close in club. However, I think Braeburn is a much better course/club and would be my pick if I lived in West U.

We are about to move to Pearland and would be curious to see what the best options are around that area. I'm thinking the Canongate membership for South Shore Harbour and Magnolia Creek would be the best and most affordable option. I live in Pearland and am a member of Mag Creek ( Cannongate ), what part you you moving to? You also may want to check Golfcrest ( Green Tee ) out as well. I was a member there back in the late 80's. I almost went back but like Mag Creek much better. Cannongate member. I am a resident of South Shore Harbor so I pay $200 a month. 2 courses within 5 miles (South Shore and Mag Creek). Definitely worth it. Nice staff although course at South Shore is closed on Mondays.

Played at both South Shore and Mag Creek through friends that are members. Definitely nice places if you can afford it. Facilities at both locations are top notch.
