Why irons don't have the same size?

Recommended Posts

When I see my irons from 5 to PW, they don't look the same at address. PW has the biggest head to the smallest head which is 5 iron. My favorite is 8 iron. It has a balance between size and workability. My question is why my 5 iron is not as big as my PW or 8 iron? Wouldn't it make easier to hit the 5 iron if it had the same size as 8 iron?

Because the PW has more loft it has to have a bigger head to provide the same amount of vertical hitting surface.

You know how hard it is to get a 3 iron through slightly thick grass? Imagine how it would be if the club head were larger. Same with a fairway wood. Hope that helps better than the wise a** crap above.
3 iron is hard either from the fairway or the rough.... geez! Can we get an intelligent answer on this?

PS. Nobody use 3 iron from the rough because of the loft. Not because of the head size. I use PW from the rough all the time and it's much easier than the smaller 3 iron.

PS. I don't think that's the reason why 3 iron is much smaller than a PW. I'm asking from a design perspective?

Even though you're being kind of a tool I will answer your question. Actually I already answered your question in my post above, but I will try to explain it a little differently.

If you measure the height of the toe of your 3 iron from off the ground it will be the same as your PW. Because of the loft of the PW it will require the face to be larger than the 3 iron. If you could theoretically bend a 3 iron to the loft of a PW you would have no surface area to hit the ball. Also the center of gravity would be too low for this loft.

The height of the toe of the iron must be maintained to provide the proper amount of vertical hitting surface. Also this helps out with head weight and COG issues. The clubs in this picture aren't perfectly lined up but it was the best I could do for a random internet picture.

Even though you are still being a tool and too ignorant to answer your own question, I'll still try to help a simpleton out. :cheesy:

Even though you are an *hole, I will try to reply your answer. Maybe you didn't get the question...

Who's asking about the height of the iron. I'm talking when you address your iron, the PW looks bigger than 3 iron. And when you see the face width, a 3 iron looks so much smaller than a PW. The height might be the same but it doesn't say anything.

A lot of clubs have an oversized PW compared to the rest of the set. MacGregor and a lot of the Japanese forging houses are notorious for this.

And a bit of friendly advice: you might want to curtail the name calling...

OP, Sustain is correct. You apparently have no grasp of geometrical shapes. (And you are being a bit of a tool, as well). The face of the PW looks bigger because it IS bigger.

Looking at the picture above, imagine a right triangle with the overall height being "A", the width along the ground being "B" and the face being "C". If A is to remain constant, B and C must increase in length when the angle BC decreases (more loft). :Schooled:

I've seen children struggle with the concept but once they get to be 10 or 12 years old the smart ones usually have no problem.
