Same size iron head do not work otherwise all clubs would look like the Browning 440's.

Actually when you called Willie Malay unintelligent, you kind of rubbed the wrong way, but I still tried to provide you with the information you asked for. You were very unappreciative though but I quickly realized who and what I was dealing with and I decided to back away.

Since we are the subject, can someone explain why the higher lofted clubs don't go farther? I mean they go higher in the air... you think they would fly farther...

I'm sure rkangrah would agree with this. He has demonstrated his mastery of geometry and I have no doubt his understanding of physics is just as good.

because they go higher and travel more upwards than lower lofted irons....

Ok. I'll stop but only because I have to go and not because I want to leave such an entertaining topic.

Tom W. is here and I'm fully confident that he will be able to explain it perfectly. Not that everyone is going to understand it though.

I think the OP has a good point. I recommend purchasing 13 PW heads and having them bent to the desired lofts.

You're welcome.

When I see my irons from 5 to PW, they don't look the same. PW has the biggest head to the smallest head which is 5 iron. My favorite is 8 iron. It has a balance between size and workability. My question is why my 5 iron is not as big as my PW? Wouldn't it make easier to hit the 5 iron?
Damn. . . it took 10 posts before someone came up with the right answer for you. That's kinda scary.

Post #10 is right. And #13 sort of hit on part of it.

In order for all the irons in a set to come out to have the same swingweight while each iron gets a half inch shorter, the headweights have to increase from 3 to 4 to 5 and so on. The typical headweight increase in irons is 7 to 8 grams between head numbers. Making the heads get progressively larger helps make it easy to have the heads keep increasing by +7 or 8 grams from head to head. So when you look at the average 5 iron which is 253 grams and then the average PW which is 281 grams, that is a big amount of weight increase so the head size is made larger.

The other part of this is that the progression of head size MAY help the designer get the center of gravity for each head in the right position with respect to the head just above and just below. I say MAY because there are TONS of different ways to manipulate the weight around a clubhead to ordain the center of gravity location.

And that's it. BTW, it is possible to make a set of irons all have the same head size in terms of height and length - to do that you manipulate the headweight progression with the sole width or the face thickness. It can be done in other words, but isn't typically done because of several reasons that would take more time to explain than what anyone cares to read about here I think.

Yeah Tom, it's scarry! Post #10 is the first close answer as I guessed.

It took two pages until I see a really good explanation like yours.

BTW I always thought it has to do with the weight and swing weight. I was just thinking would it be more easier if the long iron has the same size as an 8 iron? 3 iron would be easier to hit if it has the same size as an 8 iron. But I guess it is impossible to make that way due to weight restriction.

OK Thanks Tom as always you answer is much better than the rest.

My friend is currently playing with Mizuno MX-950. It's a forged hybrid set. The 3 and 4 are standard hybrids. The 5 to 7 and forged semi hybrid iron. The 8 to PW are forged cavity back irons. He's looking for a similar set if possible another set from Mizuno. Any suggestion?
Does it matter? If a hybrid combo set is high on someone's wish list, I doubt forged construction would be high on their agenda either - YMMV. If you really must fork out unnecessary cash on forged hybrid sets, I'm pretty sure the JDM market will cater for your needs - and empty your wallet. For example:

Also, tradition I guess. Orlimar came out with a "reverse" iron set where the long irons were bigger and then the set got progressively smaller and more compact as you went down to the short irons. This they made because long irons are harder to hit. I think weight is the main issue historically, the long iron heads get progressively lighter because of the increasing length of the shaft, to keep the swing weight the same.
