Grafalloy BiMatrx Prototype 80x - TRACKMAN TESTED (see post 23 for 65s test results)

@jay65 - I would go with the numbers in this case - unless the dispersion pattern was tighter. Ideally for your SS get your launch to 14 and keep the spin rate at 2200. Split the difference :). PX black would be an option, DI6, UST vts - keep your options open.

@sharks - this could be a good combo for you... Border line in flex - how heavy do you want your driver shaft?

@sblack - in this case transition maybe more crucial than SS. I don't swing 121, but I have a hard transition.

@bjtiger - it says no tipping suggested, but we confirmed that you can tip it (quite a bit actually).

I actually like a fairly heavy club, even my g15 felt write light and it was one of the heaviest I could find. I could never make good swings with the burner line because they felt to light. What do you guys mean by "can't handle an 80 gram shaft"? Does the weight make it harder to load? I have a pretty quick transition, so lots of times I feel like the lighter clubs are almost out of control. I think the heavier feeling may keep my tempo smooth.
Thanks for the help!

Hi

Thanks for the feedback. I spoke with my fitter on the very issue of launch angles and although I was getting 14* launch with the Bimatrix, the spin rate was 2900, and my fitter thought my ideas of getting that launch angle up to 14* was abit 'old school'. That could be because he is also aware that I play on Scottish Links courses, so the need to keep the ball down is a massive priority. So we thought a launch angle of around 12* would be better for the courses that I play on. I tried the PX Black (too much spin), DI6 (Dispersion was an issue, and inconsistent ball flight, and lower ball speed put that out of the question) UST VTS Tour SPX 6S Black. (Not bad, but spin rates were too high again) Though my fitter said he thought the SX flex could be an option. So we found that the Matrix 6m3 was the best for Ball Speeds, and spin rate reduction. Launch angle was only 12*, but we found this combo gave the best combination/compromise of numbers, according to Trackman, and the thoughts of my fitter.

i'm not thinking that you cant handle an 80g shaft - some people just don't like them. ironically, these same people played a 125g steel shaft years ago!

Swanry: I know you weren't I was just referring to thus post:

Hi

I found the Bi matrix 65S to launch quite high, so with you having 12 degrees of loft, it could be too much. But if you go up to the X, Grafalloy only offer this in 80 grams. If you think you can handle that, then fine, but my swing speed with a 6 iron is very similar to yours, and I know I couldn't handle an 80 gram shaft in a Driver in an X flex, no chance. But you may be different of course. Personally, i would go with the 65S but have it tipped half an inch. But thats just me I guess.

I was just wondering what he meant by not handling it. He made it sound like it plays very stiff because of the weight.
I may go with the 65s tipped, as this sounds like it may be better for me. That way I don't need to focus on swinging hard. And that way I can get the even higher launch it provides.
Though people say that it would never be said on this site "i need a HIGHER launching shaft". :)
Thanks for your help!

Hi

I certainly didn't mean my statement in a derigatory manner. I am sorry if you thought that. I only meant that a heavier shaft can have an affect on ball speed, it certainly does for me. I could 'handle' an 80 gram shaft, but I know my ball speed would be down in comparison to a 65 gram shaft. It was a phrase that was poorly worded by me, and for that I'm sorry.

Anyhow, back to the issue in hand. Personally I would go for the 65S but just have it tipped half an inch. I have a 913 on order with a Matrix 6m3 shaft, but I am going to order a BiMatrix for when I am playing on courses when I can afford to launch the ball a bit higher. I play in Scotland, so thats rare, but there could be days when I fancy launching that bit higher, and for a shaft that such good value, it could be an interesting alternative.

I didn't take it like that, I'm sorry if it sounded like I did! I was just confused. :) I understand now though, the weight could cause a loss in swing/ball speed. I see what you meant now.
I will see what my friend/ teacher recommends for me.
Thanks guys, I'm sorry if you thought I was upset or insulted, I wasn't at all :)

Quick question. Is this the same shaft as the one that came out in 2006 (?)? There are old clubs with the old BiMatrx in them on eBay for $25-50... where a new BiMAtrx is $100. Any difference?

blink, this is a new version of that shaft. bubba re-popularized it, grafalloy tweaked it, added a few colors and the words "tour prototype" to it, and re-released it. i can't tell you the differences between the old and new version performance-wise, but maybe the guys in the know can.
[/quote]

I would like to know if there is really a difference myself.

Hi

I just wondered if you had any feedback from your friend/teacher re the bimatrix?

I have just tipped my 65s 1/2 an inch. Be really careful. I was launching the untipped 65S at about 14-14.5*. After it had been tipped 1/2 an inch the launch angle went down to no more than about 11*!!! It makes a massive difference to tip it, even 1/2 an inch. Its probably why Grafalloy don't recommend it. Obviously I can't speak for everybody that has it tipped, but for me, at least, it made a huge difference to the launch angle.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I took advantage of the Razr Fit Driver/3W Black Friday deal and and currently sitting on a 41.5" pull X Flex while I wait for the driver to make it's way over (stationed overseas) and am curious if anyone has tried the combination. Felt like the Razr 3W likely needed a shaft upgrade regardless, and picked up the Bimatrx for $35 a couple weeks ago. I know it's been found that the shaft can be tipped, but are there any possible issues with tipping the shaft with it having already been butt trimmed down to 41.5"?
