Golf Channel Am Tour season now open

For those who might be interested in some friendly competition and see how well you play against others of your skill level, the Golf Channel Am Tour season is now open. I would encourage people to join and give it a shot. It's loads of fun and there is some good competition in Texas. Texas has 6 tours, Houston, Dallas, Hill Country (Austin/San Antonio) There's 6 flights, so you can be anywhere from scratch to a 25 handicap and still play against people of your own skill level in stroke play competition.

I have been playing a few years on it and it's lots of fun. I'm always encouraging people to join. I think they would like it if they gave it a try. Sure beats boring weekend scrambles and you get to see how good you are without mulligans and foot wedges.

Not to mention there's major tournaments on notable courses such as TPC Sawgrass and Kapalua.

If you have any questions, ask away...

This sounds interesting...how much does each event usually run? How about the major events around the country? Is there usually pretty good turnout each time?

Local tournaments usually run about $120. If it's at some place like Redstone, Woodlands Tournament course, etc, maybe a couple bucks more. Majors are usually around $300 and field sized are usually capped at around 180 players, each flight having roughly 20 players or so. I don't know what the exact number is but they usually sell out or come close. They are loads of fun. I just got back from the National Championship and I had to play against a field of 85 people from across the US. Some flights had 140 players in it. The major at Pinehurst this year sold out in 30 minutes.

Again, lots of fun to see how good you are against people of similar skill level on a local and National level at some awesome courses, meet some cool people and have a few laughs.

If it is a major, why is it based on "selling out" and not on points awarded for the season? I can not play a single tournament but take somebody's spot who won every tournament and happened to be behind me in the purchase queue of the major. Right?

You don't have to qualify for majors.

There's three tournaments on the AM Tour:

1) Local. You normally play against just people from your city, but are free to travel and play other cities local tournaments too. They are just single points, and small fields of people playing at your average local course. Lots of people from the north go play tournaments in the south due to snow in the winter.

2) Majors. These are more statewide tournaments, larger fields, double points, and often held at more notable PGA Tour caliber courses or notable courses in your state. Top 3 finishers earn exemptions to the National Championship. Majors are open to anyone who registers. They sell out because they are double points, lots of fun and a good way to get a National Championship exemption if you play well.

3) National Championship. This is everyone's goal. This is a 4 day, 72 hole tournament at the end of the season. It is by invitation only. You have to qualify for it, if you don't...better luck next year. The National Championship was held at TPC Sawgrass and Ponte Verdra course this year, next year it's at PGA West in Palm Springs. The National Championship is not just a tournament. There's all kinds of things going on at the host hotel that make it a blast. This year the Big Break chicks, Stephanie Sparks and Charlie Rymer were there, Bridgestone Ball fittings, putter fittings, regripping service from Winn, silent auctions, player dinners, Champions dinners, etc. All the ballrooms seemed to have something going on for the players. On top of that you're getting to play against the top performers in your flight from across the US on PGA Tour caliber courses. Not much beats getting to tee it up in a tournament and stand on the 17th tee box at TPC Sawgrass, look around and wonder what it must be like for the pros who have millions of people watching them, get to see the exact shot the pros have to make, the wind is swirling and you can't pick a club yourself either...just like the pros. You finally pick a club and take your shot at the notorious island green. No matter if you dunk it in the water 5 times, or stick it in the middle of the green on the 1st try, it's a moment you will never forget and what the whole season was about. It's about the experience and pushing yourself to be the best player you can be.
