C-taper or J40 CB Distance Issues?

I would have gone w/ them if i were getting this added distance consistently but i wasn't. So yeah, not really the same, but interesting nonetheless.

J40 irons are great, as many guys will confirm. I'm coming to the realization it is due to the shafts.

Sorry man, and I'm not trying to bash, but in my almost 30 years playing golf I've never experienced anything like you suggest. I've hit tons of flyers, the occasional direct sweet spot hit that over flew my target, but never a shot that flew 37 yards past the normal expected distance. As an engineer I can tell you that it's physically impossible for a shaft to cause this type of thing. Yes, C-taper is reputed to possess slightly less spin, but there is no way it is responsible for random, out of the blue low spin on a shot for no reason. There is always a reason. The shaft is nothing but a spring; load the spring and release, and it springs back.

My guess is you got steep into the ball thus delofting the club, in conjunction with hitting a flyer due to grass/moisture, and maybe even catching the ball low on the face, thus killing some more spin. Your Bridgestones have a low CG, due to that meaty sole weight, but if you catch the ball low on the face it will fly lower with less spin. Trust me, there is a reason for shots like this, and it's not the shafts.

I have j40 PC with ctaper stiff. Never ever experienced a flyer from the fairway. Great irons. Are you sure you pulled a PW? My lofts were spot on from bridgestone but check your lofts.

This discussion has really help put some closure on my experienced last year. At that time, I was playing Bridgestone J38 DPC with C-Tapers Stiff and was playing some great golf. Loved this iron and thought they were a great feeling head but the trajectory was just way too high with Project X so i decided to try C Tapers. Had several rounds under my belt with great results until.......
I recall my first experience with the "fairway flier" occurred during my club championship unfortunately and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I cannot recall the exact yardage (approx. 165) but it was a 7 iron into this green with all water carry to a green that has a bunker in the back right side. I had a perfect angle into this peanut shaped green with pin on the mid front portion and a real nice back stop before the second level tier. I normally hit my 7 iron 165 - 170 (which gave me a great yardage to attack). I proceeded to hit a shot that waved at the pin as it flew into the back bunker (190 yard carry) from the fairway and I got to see the entire flight since this was not a blind shot (i believe your Rosco1216). That bunker was an automatic additional 2 stroke mistake (water might have been better). I was completely shocked and had to check that I did not accidently pick the wrong club; nope it was my 7 iron. My playing partners were kind of surprised as well and one of the playing partners actually came up short of the green (almost in the water) because he took one less club because of what happened with my shot (he told me after the hole was over but was shocked with the outcome as well).
I proceeded to continue to play this head / shaft combination until early 2012 (another 3 months) until it happened again with a wicked 8 iron "missle". From that point forward, it was my time to start looking for a new clubhead since i thought it was more of the head (hotspots or something else) and it became a mental issue for me (head problems - I know). Now, after reading this discussion, I got my closure. It was not the Bridgestone heads but more related to the shafts that was causing this. Since then I have found my new shaft combo - Scratch AR-1 with Steelfibers 110 CW - most consistent distance and minimal dispersion of anything i have played before but you must get fit for this shaft because I tried this shaft and absolutely hated it until my fitter got the right weight and stiffness. Have not hit one "fairway flier" all year...

Thank you to all for helping provide closure on this mystery and my internal "head" issues.

I know this is a very old topic, but I came across it while looked into this exact same issue. For me, it's CMBs with C-taper X. Trying to remember why I put them back in the basement, because they're beautiful irons. Starting to remember a few times I had trouble with rockets. A 7 iron expected to fly 155 and it winds up 180. It happened enough in big spots that I lost confidence and that's deadly. I chalked it up to the shafts being too stiff, thinking I needed the S+ instead, but it looks like this is definitely an issue with the C-tapers. Wanted to stick up for the OP, since he got some pretty good ribbing. I believe you, 100%.

Definitely an old topic but thanks for commenting. In the 2 1/2 years since I started this I haven't had any similar shots arise like that combo did for me.
