Crazy shark on golf course story, and I'm not talking about Greg Norman!

At the San Juan Hills Golf Club in southern California, course hazards include sand traps and falling sharks.

Or they did on Monday (Oct. 22) afternoon, when a 2-foot-long, live leopard shark apparently plummeted from the sky and landed very close to the 12th tee box at the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., course.

The writhing fish out of water was discovered by an on-duty course marshal, who acted fast to save the shark, according to the Capistrano Dispatch.

He loaded it onto his golf cart and drove it back to the clubhouse, where other employees joined the cause to save the wayward animal. After briefly placing the shark in a bucket of homemade salt water, cart attendant Bryan Stizer used his break to drive the shark to the Pacific Ocean, about 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) away.

"I thought he was dead," Stizer told the Dispatch. "When I dropped him into the water, he just lied there for a few seconds, but then he did a twist and shot off into the water."

The shark, which reportedly had two bleeding wounds near its dorsal fin, is thought to have been dropped over the golf course by a predatory bird, though no one is known to have actually seen the shark fall.

Julianne Steers, chief aquarist at the Ocean Institute near the golf course, told the Dispatch that there are ospreys and peregrine falcons in the area that could have snatched the shark from shallow waters before losing hold of it.

Fish falling from the sky is not an unheard-of phenomenon. The downpours of fish and frogs reported throughout history and around the world have been attributed to strong winds that pick up aquatic animals and deposit them many miles inland.

I like how they mention the guy took his break to take the shark to the ocean. Can't have the guy getting fired for saving sharks on company time!

In Florida fisherman have been known to catch tarpon with osprey talons and leg remnants embedded in their backs. The osprey unknowingly latch on to a fish too large for them to extract from the sea. Once their talons engage, they don't easily release, so the fish drowns the bird.

"I was picked out of the ocean, flown through the air, and dropped off a few miles away at a golf course. Rough landing, but the guy on the 12th tee had a decent swing. I would have been here on time if that jerk didn't insist on waiting until his lunch break to bring me back."

I've played this course a few times... decent little place. Now I feel a bit cheated. Seeing a shark on the teebox would compensate for the greens being near impossible to read.

I love the youtube headline "golfers brave shark infested course" really, They are [i]braving [/i]it? I mean if sharks could walk right on out of that pond I suppose teeing it up a few yards away would be an act of bravery. But, they can't.

I am also somewhat unimpressed that the shark saver in this story had to wait to take the thing back to the water for his break. It was a 4 mile drive, what's that take, 20 min round trip including it's release? It is a good story though, glad the thing survived so it can grow big and strong and have a long life full of killing other, much cuter animals like otters and seal lions. With any luck, it will get a shot at payback on that damn falcon next time it's hungry. That dude has lost the element of surprise for sure.
