Persimmon drivers with really nice grain pattern ?

The included photo is of a couple of RH woods we've been entrusted with-

The bottom is a LH Toney Penna Model 65 with white insert (we've already shown)

The middle is a RH Toney Penna "The Natural", with graphite insert, and graphite shaft.

The top is of a driver which belonged to, and was used by, one [i]Walter Hagen[/i].
It is from Oakland Hills CC, a few generations ago, when "The Haig" was the pro.

The gentleman who provided all the information about it, chooses to remain anonymous, but please do not doubt for one moment "Sir Walter" used this club...

Rex, the Penna with the black graphite insert is a winnah!!!!!!!! The grain on that is epic. I always like a natural stain persimmon with grain like that.

Less than 1 week until the Masters... Wood Bros "Augustan" Masters sample shown to Augusta National when Dave Wood was asked to provide samples to Augusta National. The final product was a Limited edition "Masters" driver that said "Masters" on the crown. The grain is not easy to see on this club, but its very nice. I like the stain on this head because it reminds me of the bark on the tall Augusta Pines at Amen corner.

While these might not be showing off the grain, I thought you might like these.
First off is a re coat / freshen up of a Spalding Custom Crafted set that I was eager to play. The insert on the 5 wood still needs to be reset though.

The Spaldings didn't really work out on course for me, but the upside to that was that led me to rebuilding a beat up Powerbilt Super Citation that I'd been saving for a rainy day. When I picked this up it had a cracked neck, bent shaft and a chunk out of the insert. So a fair bit of reshaping was in order. The original stain work was very patchy too. Unfortunately even after being completely stripped, sanded and restained my result wasn't that much better. So I ended up going black...

I'm currently playing this driver, and performance wise I couldn't be happier.

Plays nicely. Never really played lofted woods previously. I hit it very high, so always preferred long irons. Tried rescue clubs, but just could not control the flight.

Going to persimmon though, a good drive into the breeze can still leave you 210 into a long par four (of which there are many where I play) and can be difficult making a long iron talk from this range if you have erred from the short grass.

Have found more four woods than five woods, and some of these (M43s, etc.) can still have big heads. Good from the tee or fairway, but not as good from damp semi-rough. Finding a neat little five wood is a real challenge. Not sure if it was difficult finding wood dense enough to get the club up to weight with such a small clubhead or whether the best examples were used so much they are now battered from being played from woods, sand, heather, car-parks, and so on, just don't seem to be as many around.

Got a doozy here though.

Absolutely correct about finding a good 5 wood. Plenty of 3s and 4s around, but I have yet to find one good five in an old Mac. A few Wilson's, but I don't really care for their woods, love the old irons. When I do carry a 5 it's a Ping eye2. Works nicely, but looking for something more traditional.

Last December I picked up 3 older persimmon woods from the late 20's and early 30's. Included in the 3 persimmon woods was a Jack White driver(steel shaft). The idea was to restore a older Men's R/H MacGregor "Jack White" driver if the driver head was in good condition. It was a gamble because, in the pictures, two of the woods showed several long splits(some quite open) in the club heads and in the description, the seller did not identify which club was which. My thought's were, maybe the Jack White persimmon wood driver is NOT one of the woods with the long splits in the club heads. When I received the 3 woods, my hunch paid off. The Jack White driver was in pretty good condition and the other two had several long splits in the club heads. I wondered to myself, "can these two clubs heads with the long splits(some quite open) be brought back together some way? So I wrote Dave Wood and asked him if it's possible. He said yes,,,send some pictures. Then I thought....why bug Dave during the Festive season, try a few ways yourself. So, I tried one method two ways. I immersed the persimmon wood club heads in water for different lengths of time. One 48 hours and the other 96 hours. The splits did close right up tight BUT after a couple of days drying time both club head with the splits opened up again [u]and[/u] were longer and wider. The longer the immersion in water, the longer the split and wider the split. Question.... you write of ,"100 yr old persimmon heads that were spectacular". Why does some persimmon wood split and open up(my two woods) and some persimmon wood stay solid, usable(and desirable) after 100 years? Is it how the persimmon wood is dried or stored or both? Do the elements(moisture content, sun light or lack of it) contribute to persimmon wood splitting?
