Razr Fit Aftermarket Shaft Buyers Beware - Callaway won't help

FYI....

So I bought a VTS TourSPX shaft fitted with Razr Fit adapter, after about 4 rounds noticed the ferrule slipped up the shaft a bit and started spraying drives. Turns out, apparently the adapter went bad, as can hold head of driver and turn the shaft grip like a screwdriver.

Took the shaft out, and if I hold the adapter tip, can turn the shaft round and round.

So, I call Callaway, offering to pay for them to put a new adapter on the shaft, they refused, as they don't offer the TourSPX shafts. I even offered to assume liability if something goes wrong or shaft breaks, nope, sorry we won't touch it. I find it somewhat hard to believe they won't even touch the product if not in their OEM offerings. I even explained they have plenty of UST products, just not the TourSPX VTS, which they recognized but made no difference.

For the first time in 20 years, I have to say Callaway Customer Service has disappointed me.

Long and short of it, if you buy a shaft they don't offer here or elsewhere, and something goes wrong, don't expect Callaway to even look at it or touch it - you are on your own. They did offer to sell me a new adapter though.

If you're thinking of buying aftermarket shafts, keep this in mind.

I guess i am not sure why you expect them to do anything for you in this situation. You are basically criticizing them for not wanting to do club work for you. As an OEM, that seems to be outside of their services spectrum. Especially when working on equipment they don't even offer. I would take them up on their offer of a new adapter and find someone who does that work to install it for you.

You're mad at Callaway because a shaft they didn't install into one of their tips is now not working with their tip? Sounds to me you should be mad at whomever sold it to you. Seems just just a glue problem you can go and have redone locally and avoid a two week wait sending it back.

Did you install the shaft into the tip or was it done by a club fitter? I think the problem needs to be taken up with whoever built that setup for you. I assume if they are a decent business man, they will just redo the epoxy.

I'm not 'mad' at them, this was an FYI, I just expected if I offered to pay for it, to have those who know how to do this correctly do the work, assuming them. I could care less about 2 weeks, I have plenty of shafts I can use.

If I offer to pay for something and waive 'liability' if shaft broke or something similar, I thought they'd be willing to help.

Learned a valuable lesson, don't buy anything an OEM doesn't offer.

This is odd....

Just cause you say 'I waive the liability' don't mean a multi-billion dollar company is going to be like "well ok" since you say so.

That club is going to float around for god knows how long with thier name on it. They probably have a very good reason not to build a 'one off' odd ball club combo they they don't actually offer , make or sell. This is why you see so much "Tour Only" stuff.

I'll bet there's thousands of combos that each manufacturer won't build for a random anonymous customers. That's why people go to club builders to get clubs built. :) Crazy idea I understand.

Chevy blew me off too when I asked them to put a 327 small block in late model car.

Or, just take it to your local golf shop (Golfsmith, Van's, PGA Tour Superstore, etc.), and they can either epoxy the tip back on to the shaft or order a new tip and install it on your shaft. Problem solved. The Callaway service department isn't really there to do any and all repair work. They are there to service the clubs they build and sell. Obviously the shaft was not installed by them, so they are not going to do any repair work on it. That's what the service dept at your local golf shop is for.

I too had an adapter slip on the shaft. I simply re-epoxied it and carried on. It's been fine ever since.

I didn't for one second assume that Callaway would help me out in that instance. IMO, I don't think you should have either.

Have someone re-epoxy the tip back on and get out there and enjoy the club. :)

Funny too that instead of griping about someone completely unrelated to the situation......this thread isn't a gripe against him.

:)

What did "Tour type club builder" have to say when he saw that club ?

Allow me to clarify why I called Callaway in the first place.

Took the shaft/club to authorized retailer, who said, the adapter is toast, need to send to Callaway, which they offered to do, so clearly that retailer assumed Callaway would replace tip.....clearly they don't know the policy.

I mainly called Callaway to explain what authorized retailer stated, inquiring if indeed the adapter is toast, or simple re-epoxy would cure.

I inquired, if at my cost, they would mind installing a new tip, to which their response led me to start this thread, sorry I did now.

Clearly, figuring that maybe the OEM could install a new tip, at customer expense, so I know would be done correctly this time, was too much to ask.

It's amusing that see occasional post around here about some shaft broke, but they (Cally) didn't install so won't warranty, and everyone jumps on Callaway about it, this was more intended to advise folks of their policy and not to bother calling. Guess shouldn't bother posting either.

Thanks to the few who offered some reasonable guidance on how or where to get repaired, rest of you, well....

I also have bought a PX black 6.5 and and a Kuro Kage shaft for my driver and 3 wood. Both adaptors purchased from golfworks failed and the ferul came away and the shaft could be easily spun around in hand installed in the adaptor. I was lucky as I bought 4 adaptor by mistake (added them to my basket twice, didn't check basket before checking out) and i had two spare ones. These since have been fitted again by the same club maker with the same glue and so far so good.
Maybe we got unlucky and there is a few adaptors for whatever reason have some trouble bonding with the adhesive we use. not sure but you are not the only one to have this happen. Both of mine failed within 3 rounds o being fitted. it is not Callaway's fault that the adaptors had problems with shafts they don't supply with the club. Just buy a new adaptor and make sure its a genuine one and re-fit the shaft.

Do you have pictures of the adapter? I'm curious as to see how it could be "toast" as you/they put it.

I'm not questioning your motives, more interested in the scenario as a whole.

Being a RAZR Fit player myself, I just can't mentally grasp how the adapter could fail unless it was installed incorrectly into the head or the epoxy failed. If the epoxy failed, this would be the simplest of fixes. Sending it back to Callaway for a fix like this would be more of a PITA than anything.

If it's beyond an epoxy failure, then you're definitely talking a warranty replacement and I would be shocked if Callaway didn't help you out there.

I agree. Two things can happen.

1) Epoxy comes loose. It's not a callaway install so go to the guy that put the shaft on the cog.
2) The cog got mangled up and you cant change settings. If it's an authetic Callaway cog and not a copy I would be suprised if callaway didn't do anything about it. If it's a Chinese copy. Well your SOL.

Got pics?

In my case it may be the epoxy. Anyway just use a heat gun to heat up the old adaptor and pull it off. give the adaptor and shaft a good clean and make sure the inside is roughed up a bit to ensure the epoxy has a rough surface to assist with bonding. Any club builder should be able to do this. There will be no need to cut the shaft the get the adaptor off.
