Most inconsistent round of golf..EVER.

So while I was back home at my folks house over Thanksgiving, I decided to get in 18 on Friday at the course I grew up playing and that I haven't played since they re-designed in the Spring. I hadn't played in 3 weeks but have hit balls a few times since then and I play to scratch while in season.

Temp was about 50 and breezy so it was rather cool and took awhile to get warmed up but then I had the most awkward round of my adult life..

1-4(+5)(Bogey, Bogey, Double, Bogey)..Was swinging good and hitting good shots but the greens were very hard and took awhile to get my touch down.

5-9(-3)(Birdie, Birdie, par, birdie, par)..Obviously everything came together and was playing well. Hit all fairways and all greens and made some putts. Managed a 2 over 38 on the front after starting 5 over..Then things started to get weird..

10-15(all pars)..My swing started to feel very awkward and out of sync. I hit all fairways and all greens..all were good shots but I felt like my swings was so out of sync and awkward, however the ball was going perfectly straight and proper distance and almost hit the pin on 2 holes on my approach.

16-18( bogey, triple, triple). The "feeling" I had in my head about my swing feeling out of sync came to show on my shots. I felt like I could barely make contact with any iron or wedge and was shanking and duffing and skulling every approach shot and chip it seems. My swing LITERALLY felt like an unfolding launch chair.

Anyone else have a round like this happen to them? Could it have been the hangover from the night before(hangover from too much food and also too much booze)??

Well mine was so weird because every 4-5 holes I played and felt like a completely different golfer and felt I was swinging completely different. All within 3 1/2 hours.

Yep, yesterday my putter was hot on the front nine and my driver was attracted to the closest wooded area. Finally figured out on the 9th with my 3w that it was a grip issue. Stopped for lunch at the turn. Come out to 10 and blast my drive straight as an arrow but putter had gone cold and had several 3 putts. Short game was hot and cold the entire round. Frustrating but still glad to be out playing!

Well I've certainly never had one like it that's for sure. Felt like I lost my swing after the turn but the ball still went where it was supposed to for 5 holes and then come 16 all hell broke lose.

Had a 41/31 round last week.

Also had 10 birdies and an eagle during my PAT a couple months back. Was +4 through 7 with a 4 putt and three 3 putts...following the 4 putt, which was a total hot-headed mental lapse, i gave myself a little talking to on the way to the next tee and then went eagle, 3 putt bogey, birdie, birdie, birdie, then hit the stick on a par 3 on the following hole. Was low medalist by a mile.

Just the way I play golf...never been the "par" type of guy...run hot and cold with driver...when it's hot, I can play with the best of them...when it's cold, I lose all momentum and concentration.

It was just so weird to feel my swing go completely out of whack like that towards the end of the round. Scores aside. This was completely different from just having some bad holes. After the turn I just said to my buddy "My swing just feels like its out of sync and i'm making horrible swings but the ball is going exactly where it should". Then I felt like, and I couldn't, hit an iron or a wedge the last 3 holes. Front 9 was completely normal and swing felt fine and as it should.

It happens....and it will again.

I've actually had some really good rounds thinking I have no idea what I'm doing. It's like I never swung a golf club before.

Of course I've shot the other kinds of rounds too. ;)

It hasn't happened in recent years that I can recall and hope it doesn't for a very long time! I'm telling myself it was due to a rare combination of the cold weather, that I hadn't played in 3 weeks, or 2 weeks before that, food hangover and whiskey hangover :) This is for hope that I don't make too much of it in my head and it screw with my mind.

Just got back from Florida played five rounds. I choked on my drive on every par 5 - duck hook. All of the courses I played started with two par 4s and I was able to hit good drives on those just when I hit the first par 5 I would get all out of whack. I didn't feel like I was trying to kill it or anything. On the third day I just put my driver away after my first duck hook and played out with my three wood.

I went to the range before most rounds and I went to the range for awhile after my second round - and everything worked there. :)

The only thing I can figure is that I was mentally choking because of my side game. I was playing a match with my family - I was playing off my own ball vs. a two-some playing captain and mate. I was also giving them two strokes on the par 5s and one stroke on par 4s which meant I pretty much had to birdie to guarantee a win on the par 5s.

Hopefully I've gotten it out of my system it was very frustrating.

Otherwise I played well, fairways and greens.

Yep. this is happening to me right now... I was playing a tough course last week with uneven lies after a 2 week layoff (I usually play 1-2 times a week) and forgot my glove. First hole was fine, swing appeared normal. The 2nd hole is a par 3 that has an elevated tee box on a hill and the green is 30 feet below.I hit a shank. Since I was playing by myself, I hit another ball; same result. I hit 10 balls in total and shanked all of them.

Played the next two holes by myself and I kept making adjustments and like you said, it kept spiraling downhill and felt like I totally lost my swing. I caught up with a 3some and started playing with them. I am a 6 handicap and that day, I played the rest of the course like a 25+ handicapper - shanking and hacking around, i might have hit 1 or 2 okay shots every 3 holes. 1 out of 2 shots were a shank.

Went to my home course and played 9 holes yesterday. I had my glove with me and I was confident that it would be a better round. The shanks were still there. If I was not shanking it, I was pulling it 30 yards or slicing it. Truly feels like I am playing for the first time and reminiscent of my first couple of months after picking up this game (8 years ago).

anyone have any advice?? help!!

Take all your change and put it in your left pocket, tie your shoelace in a double knot, and take a tee and stick it behind your left ear..then take a ball and hit it the hell up the fairway.

Or have a few beers..and go play.

It's all mental.

It really is all mental. If I start to question anything I'm doing it's pretty much all downhill from there. The beers don't help me so much on the course, but when I used to play ball I'd be like Ron Artest sipping on some Remy and then shooting the lights out.

I shot 53 - 37 recently. The back is the harder 9. The thing that motivated me was that a stranger with whom I was sharing a cart mentioned something on the 9th hole, to the effect of, "I took a tough double bogey there, and almost had you..."

I hadn't realized he was "playing me"....at which point I played much better.

#10 3i to 60yds out, chip to 15 feet, miss the birdie by an inch. Par.
#11 Triple Bogey ...130yd Par 3, over a huge bunker, from alternate tees, that left the traditional "fairway" off to the left where the regular box was. I hit a PW into the wind, pin high but left in the "fairway". Chunk, chunk, chunk by the hole, two putt. WTF?
#12 Driver to 93yds out. Knocked it to 3ft. Birdie.
#13 Driver to 78yds out. 20ft, two putt. Par.
#14 5i left in the collection area, chipped below the hole 12ft left, one putt. Par.
#15 Driver 275yds. 306yds left to pin, 3w long draw/hook but in the rough and playable. AW to just off the green. AW to 1ft. Tap in. Par.
#16 5i over the water to 28ft. Two putt. Par.
#17 3i to 130yds out. AW to 20ft. Two putt. Par.
#18 Driver 310yds to 200yds out. 5i to 40ft, but the wrong tier of the green. Rammed the first putt by the hole 20ft. Two more putts. Par.

He shot a 43-44...and edged me by 3 strokes overall. 87 to 90. Though through the day I had figured out he was supposedly an 8.x index, and this was his home course, though it was very, very windy. I had him net, but would have loved to win gross.
