Ping G20 - how was a 335 installed

Hi All

I just pulled a diamana WB 60 reg from my G20 - I was expecting to find a shim (or something) and this is what I found.......Just to keep the suspense a little longer, the G20 was a PUD from Ping with the WB as a custom shaft (so I know it's the 'real' WB).....NOTHING but glue!!!!

That's right no shim, or anything else. It could have been filled with shafting beads, but hard to tell after the heat/extraction.

I reshafted with PF V2 60reg, 350 tip...and the shaft barely fit, as in it was a 'loose' fit. Put some beads in with the glue, very careful after install and it was fine....

FYI...I don't have a 100,mph swing, smooth transition, so I am no 'animal'

The question/concern??? is how did the 335 tip fit in the 350 hosel without any 'help?!" What if I had a 'dustin johnson & the other ball crushers' power? And the stress that kind of swing would place on the shaft/hosel? Can somebody with more knowledge/experience help me try to solve my conundrum?

What did he ferrule look like?

don't remember the type of ferrule, escape my mind but it did not attach into the hosel

Kind of weird, I mean, if you stick enough glue in the hosel, most times it'll work, but I was expecting something more 'concrete/safe' from ping. Unless, Ping knows something I don't - like there is really no need for shims.

wonder what others more knowledgeable than I have to say???

Just pulled a blueboard with a .335 tip from a g20 today. This was a PING install and it had a copper looking shim

Was it a g35t shaft, or x5ct? Diamana made a series of g35t shafts that were .350 tip, and work just fine in Ping heads without shims.

Ping uses a collared ferrule with a .335 reducing sleeve that extends about .25" into the shaft. This helps to center the shaft, but I still always use a brass shim in addition to this ferrule.

So thin that the sleeve broke off one of my ferrules during install. Not a big deal as long as you use a shim. If there wasn't a collared ferrule or a shim, then there's no telling how centered the shaft really was. Certainly would require alot of beads. With Ping's quality control, it's surprising they would've done this without a shim and/or collared ferrule.

Perhaps you are right Matt (although I'm almost 100% certain I didn't see it when it was being pulled), but I guess we'll never know now that the 'evidence' has been melted.
Since the shaft is still in tact, and I didn't have any issues with the driver, I guess Ping's QC is batting 50% in my opinion. Being in the golf industry I was hoping stuff I PUD from Ping (there's a lot of stuff I plan to order!) was more 'proper' for lack of a better word. But this is the first instance of questioning QC I've had.
I'll get back you when I either get the Anser or g25 driver.
