By 1986 he'd changed a few things but not much.

Driver - 43.5" 9.5* D6.5 Open 2* 13.625 ounces (backweighted), Dymanic S500. (Jack added 1/2" to his driver but didn't change the headweight)

3 wood - same club as 1976 (backweighted 1/2 ounce)

Irons - 1 iron 15*, 2 iron 18*, pw 52*, sw 58* (irons Dynamic S400 hardstepped, wedges Dynamic R)

Lies one up except sw, which was 1 flat.

Same set make up (driver, 3 wood, 1-P, S)

Same iron lengths (38.5" 2 iron)

Grips black leather round wraps 10.5" long 1/32 oversized

May have to try one. I've never (knowingly) hit a club weighted in this manner.

Jack used Lamkin leather grips, the old fashioned kind. A leather strip with paper under listing and a plastic cap. They were changed often. I think he may have occasionally used rubber, but not very often.

I remember reading about his 3 wood that he played for so many years, fellow pros would hold it and they could not believe how slippery and hard the leather grip was as he did not want to change it. When he finally did change the leather he said it never played the same after.

I remember golf digest in the 80s showed pics of Jack's Armour 945W upclose, face, crown, ect. He was also tee'n up a Tourney ball while practicing in Florida. The grain on his driver was off the chart. Absolutely perfect tight Horseshoe grain. Anybody remember which issue that was in? I know it was taken from one of Jack's instructional books.

Here is a good pic of Jack's 945W and his 693, and a copy of the putter he used to win the Masters. The original putter is MIA... These clubs are in the Jack Nicklaus Museum. There are some good videos on youtube of the museum. His 945W is probably the most famous persimmon driver of all time, I would imagine. Can you imagine what that would is worth?

HAB-

Sounds like a few lights from Melrose Park, IL...

You have to go back to Sports Illustrated in 1967, US Open at Baltusrol-
Where a 27 years young Jack Nicklaus is on the cover with "White Fang"

Everyone gets a chance to compare the covers-

Sports Illustrated 1967 Nicklaus at Baltusrol with the Sports Illustrated 1980 Nicklaus at Baltusrol...

White Fang 1967 vs George Low 1980

Rex, I was born in the city and grew up in the Northwest suburbs. I played hockey many nights in Oak Park and Franklin Park. If only I had taken up golf before 1971!

Freddie-

Does anyone have any photos on what clubs (Woods and Irons) Lee Trevino was playing here at Wentworth in 1970?

Of course it appears Trevino was using a Wilson 8802 putter, and it's easy to recognize the red Slazenger bag and Slazenger (Black Cat) logo on his sweater.

In 1971, Trevino wins the US Open at Merion (beating Nicklaus in a playoff), the British Open, and the Canadian Open in a 3 week period.

Charley-

Thanks for the early photo of "White Fang".

Still "Two Books Easy"....

Trevino won the 68 Open with a Wilson driver. In 1970, it broke. He switched to a MacGregor driver with a metal firing pin (1960 vintage)He used it till 1983 when he went to a metal driver

He putted with an 8802 most of the time. However, in 1983 he used a ping ablade and went back and forth between the 8802 and the ping

I am curious as to what irons Trevino used during his playing yrs on the regular tour (non senior). In a Golf Dig article in 2013, he mentions that after his Open win in 68, he found some blank iron forgings in Australia (?) from a local club maker, and claimed they were the best set he ever had, once he ground them to his liking. However, he continued to modify them and they were never quite the same. I know he was a Rawlings pro for most of his non senior career. But did he really hit Rawlings forgings (especially prior to the TPenna purchase by Rawlings)? Curious....
