Odyssey Tank #7 Putter

I think I can help :stop: ...

Tank is a putter that we showed to our sales force for the first time on Wednesday before the Show started. It is not replacing any lines. It's not a seismic shift in the way we'll develop putters in the future. It is, however, a single head offering that will come to retail in early April. When rumors began swirling about the anchoring ban nearly a year ago, we started thinking of the alternative methods to putt for those that have the "yips". Arm Lock was one of them and another we really liked was an extended length putter that had counterbalance weighting that could quiet the hands. As you can imagine we tested everything that was in the market and felt like we could improve on it.

Here's what we're offering:
A modified #7 head: 400 grams, alignment lines that run all the way to face and something we jokingly call double barrel alignment. A lot of tour players like the half moon shape in the back of the #7, so we decided to go with two half moons for the alignment. You'll also notice the Tank fender style design on the bottom. This helps the putter sit very square at address.

Weighting Story: Along with the 400 gram head, we went with a counter balance weight, slugged in the (yep, I'm about to say it) butt of the club and a heavier shaft that we worked specifically with True Temper on. On the shorter version the shaft is about 30 grams heavier than std. around 150 grams and on the longer version it's actually a cut down OG Skip Pole shaft (we liked the weight). Essentially all the components were carefully selected to get to my next point.

Balance Point: When we've seen heavy putters in the market in the past, the balance point has been very high, and up towards the grip. We felt that this killed all the feel in the hands. I believe that was done intentionally to take the hands out of it. What we found was that you could have a traditional balance point (just like all of our putters) and still quiet the hands by weighting all the components. This gives it a better feel that you could imagine for a club that weighs around 600 grams.

Insert: Same as White Hot Pro and Versa...original White Hot feel with a lot more consistency.

Offerings: 34", 36", 38" and 40"...also available in customs. We've not brought these out to tour yet. the 8 we had in the booth at the Show were quite literally the first 8 finished samples I saw.

I hope that helps.
[/quote]

Thank you for explaining it better than my attempt. Most heavy putters feel off somehow this one felt so well balanced and was sweet. The tour guys are going to love it on those greens.

I can see this being a winner! I have, for a while, been weighting the grip of my putter (with weight plugs) and finally found a weight and feel I like. It is a search and process you will need to try a bunch of different weights but when you find the right weight for you it will help you smooth out your stoke. It takes some time but worth the adventure!

yes i like it, plumbers neck would be better though !!

Are we for plumber's neck or not? Just thought I'd sketch this up and throw this out there for debate.
It's probably a cleaner look the way it is.

I'm not from Callaway, I just do this for fun, call me an analyst.

Agreed! Sight line over the 3 dots.

My one concern with this is if the entire putter is heavy (the point I know), I wonder how hard it will be to adjust to fast/really fast greens. But this was my problem when I went belly, I had to practice a lot to get lags down, and then again to get lags down on fast greens.

That and I hope if I replace the grip with a Superstroke it won't completely jack up the weight, which I'm assuming it will....

Been reading up on this putter and it seems to hold the promise I am looking for.

I am considering getting the new White Hot Pro #7, but after reading about the Tank, I am having second thoughts about it.

Anyone have this in the Southern CA region that I may be able to try it?

I have one ordered but couldn't wait so I made one myself from a tm manta mid. I went 37 with it and filled the shaft with sans and added a 100 gram counter weight. It's amazing how well it rolls and how good it feels. My only complaint is I played in the rain this weekend and kept catching it on my rain jacket. I'm thinking of cutting it down to 35 with a regular grip instead of the belly grip.

Me too. I added a 100gr counter weight to my #7 MetalX about a month ago. This weekend I had my lowest putt total ever at my home course (34 putts, only 2 three-putts). My yips aren't as bad anymore and I'm lagging my putts a lot better now.

So I went and tried out the Tank, both 36 and 38" versions and I really liked them, not sure which I liked more is part of the problem. The other problem is I tended to pull a lot of the putts, could this have to do with the added weight? I hit my #7 Metal X beautifully, and just love the heavier feel of the new Tank. Is this somehting you guys think I would get used to, or is this a huge red flag that maybe this putter is not for me? also, maybe I could just get it fit for me and that will hep, any thoughts are appreciated

Has anyone put a Superstroke on one of these yet? Does it mess with the balance of the club at all? I'd be putting a 3.0 on one and i'm not sure how much the stock grip weighs given I haven't actually bought the putter yet.

I did and it really didn't change the feel of the balance a lot. I noticed the head feels a slight bit heavier since the SuperStroke is a little lighter than the stock grip, but nothing major. I changed the 38" and it has the longer grip on, but I am assuming that you will feel even less change if you are playing the 36" model with standard length grip on it.

Thanks for that Knudson, some good info there.

Another question for you given you went with the 38" model; Are you gripping down and using it like a 35" putter? Did you try the 36" and just prefer the feel of the 38'?

I'd like to see the Tank in the Versa paint scheme and/or with a site line instead of the dots. The Versa 2 ball paint scheme may also be a good look. I've played Ghost putters since the Corsa came out. The new Odyssey line has me thinking.

I bought the 38" to get the heavier weight model. I choke down and play it almost like a 34" putter, my hands are right on the bottom section of the green. I have a good 4" or so that is above my hands. From what I read and researched, that is how it was designed. I did think about the 36" since that is closer to my current game, but didn't like choking down on the standard length grip. Just didn't feel right with my hands that close to the shaft.

I too would love the Versa paint on this bad boy! I think that would make it a stone cold killer. Right now I am really rolling this well. Has almost made me forget about my Versa #7!
