70 year old out drives you on every hole...

You would probably burn that $2000 bag of yours.

C'mon, admit it: You'd be in tears inside watching gramps pound you to the club house, him with his fly open, drooling and playing that ancient gear.

How the mighty have fallen...:)

[sup]I love it when I play 60 to 80 year olds and they play well and hit the ball a decent distance. Given that I'm 54, I'm envisioning my future and looking for inspiration from these folks. I usually ask them how they stay in shape and how they keep playing good golf into their later years.[/sup]

My Dad is 80 and consistently shoots better than his age (from the Senior tees). The old man can chip and putt like nobody's business.

Off the tee I was longer but they were making EVERYTHING from within 100 feet.

I have played with a couple old guys (late 60's) that could pipe their drives a good 260-280. Luckily for me, I hit mine 270-290. :)
It makes me feel good that I've got a good 30 years of decent golf left.

I assume Jack is talking about the bag not the stuff inside of them. Getting a bomb stitched on every time I drive it 350 sure isn't cheap especially when you use gold thread.

The broadcast yesterday said one of the callway guys was doing it. But as he wasn't a WXRer he was using the LPGA standard of like 310 yards.

I am waiting to see this http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/blogs/newstuff/2012/12/a-calf-leather-golf-bag-yours.html on BST.

This is a pretty hilareous discussion!

I personnaly know 3 guys over 70 who hit it over 275 and only play from the tips. (Two of them are pros)

Young people seem to forget that in golf, a physically superior 70 year old is probably still a superior golfer to 75% of younger players.

My dad turns 70 in March. He still *pounds* the ball. He can shoot, and did several times last year, in the low 70's on a 6800 yard course... and he's an awful putter. Awful.
I forgot to add that he's also a 6.something index. Playing the best golf of his life. But he's in shape-- he started running marathons at age 55 and ran a handful before he had to quit with degenerative hip issues. He's in much better shape than other men his age (and, honestly, in better shape than me).

The number of 70 year old that hit a legit 275 (i.e. non of this altitude, 100 ft downhill shot type crap) is very low. Go look at the results of the Masters division of the LDA to see how few 65 year olds (using 48" drivers) can crank it over 300 yards. Or look at what happened to Jack and Arnie (or really any of the senior guys) between 60 and 70 to see how much age takes away from most people. The few that remain super suple are the exception.

I think that Is probably true, but I do have one story that is true. We play on a regular basis with an 83 year old. He gets it out consistently in the 260 range, and usually dead straight. Rarely shoots above his age, plays from either the regular men's tees or the tips, and is unGodly fast. Really fun to watch him play.

We are at almost 4,000* of altitude so that does make a big difference. But he played in our state amateur tournament last summer. Course was set up at just over 7,000 yards and they had it soaking wet to make it play even longer. He struggled the first day with an 89 but followed up on the second day with a 79. There were numerous good players posting in the 80's. pretty amazing gentleman.

I completely disagree!

There are quite a few long hitting senior players in Texas.

Lots of guys maintain their physical conditioning and strength by continuing To work out, including weight work. We play year round.

Houston is pretty flat at 40' above sea level, and my group has 2 guys, one 70 and the other 75, who both hit it over 275yds all the time. One of them can carry it 275 when he lets it out. In fact, he proved it on a launch monitor last week, ringing up a 116mph swing speed, 168mph ball speed, and predicted carry of 282 on one effort.

Just because 70 year olds don't compete in macho long drive contests doesn't mean much. They're all still trying to keep up with the younger guys and would consider an age handicapped long drive competition meaningless, except that they can't hit it like they used to any more.

Hence, my earlier statement about superior 70 year old players still being better than most younger guys want to believe.

BTW, the 70 year old' son is a PGA professional who has 178mph ball speeds and carries it over 300 yds.

Maybe it's fortunate genetics, but clearly possible, as the old guy has lost 10-20 mph in ball speed compared to his son.

Mike Austin was 64 when he hit one 515 , and I don't think he was a GWRX forum member either!

Michael Hoke Austin (February 17, 1910 – November 23, 2005) was an English-American golf professional and kinesiology expert, specializing in long drives. Besides a doctorate in kinesiology, Dr. Austin had degrees in: Mechanical engineering, philosophy, and physics. He also worked on a highly classified aerospace project (that later became the space program). He was a poet, philosopher, actor, fighter pilot, undefeated heavyweight fighter, contracted opera singer, and spoke several languages.

How far do they hit it when the wind isn't at the back and the holes are not downhill? :busted_cop: I am sure there are some 70 year old who can bomb it. In years of playing on FL golf course with tons of 65+ year old golfers, I haven't meet one where I would take the over on a neutral course though. I am sure he is out there but he is rarer than they guy that can carry 300 consistantly in standard conditions.

Again the point of the LDR is not that your guys should be there. It is that a lot of guys do that and there are very few 70 years (and even 65 year olds) that are out bombing the ball. There are tons of golfers that work out and have killer mechanics (i.e. most of the senior circuit). Few of them have sweet swings at 70.

And much like GWXR's the fact of a 35 mph tailwind, at altitude, on probably rock hard fairways just get ignored. On GWXR, Luke Donald would walk around and talk about how he bombs it 370+ and DJ would be talking about hitting it 460.
