Changing shaft in a driver/3 wood - how will this affect swingweight

My friend got a Nike SQ strong 3 wood for christmas and it came with an Aldila Nv65 shaft installed.

 

He wants to install a heavier 80 gram fairway wood shaft in the 3 wood in stead. How will this affect the swingweight of the club ?

 

He called a local golfshop and they would installe the new shaft for him, but they said he basically would ruin the specifications of the club, because the club was built to match an Aldila Nv65 shaft.

I say this is bull - the club will not be ruined in any way - and maybe the new shaft will fit him much better than the old one. Only problem is the swing weight, if you install a 15 gram heavier shaft in the 3 wood......

 

Have any of you WRX'ers had any kind of negative experience with installing a new shaft in a clubhead that originally was built to match a shaft with another weight and playing

characteristic (Nv65 weighs 68 gram in Stiff and a Axis stiff weighs 81 gram)

This opinion is from a fellow golf nerd with a good deal of experience in changing the set up in clubs and watching it done in Tour vans. I completely disagree with his golf shop. The OEM's don't neccessarily build the club to fit the stock shaft. They try to put a shaft in the clubhead that will appeal or be playable for the largest segment of the market. I have an 83g shaft in my T60 and Sumo 3 woods. The stock shaft in the retail version was 63g. It will affect the swingweight and can affect ball flight. But that is ok. The shaft is the engine of the club. You pick the engine that performs best for how you play the club. A good clubfitter can get the swingweight back in line with what you need using various methods from lead tape, weighted plugs or Tungsten powder.

 

I am with you.....it is bull.

Remember, this is just a ball park figure for normal most case.

 

Some shaft have tip or butt weight will not be applied on this rule.

 

1/2" = 3 swing weight points

 

2 gr club head weight = 1 swing weight point

 

5 gr grip = 1 swing weight point

 

9 gr shaft weight differences = 1 swing weight point

Will this basically mean that my friends Nike SQ 3+ wood will go from a D2 to a D4 in swingweight if he gets rid of the original Aldila Nv65 68 gram shaft and installs an Axis 81 gram shaft and installs a Midsize grip (8 gram heavier than standard size Nike grip) - the shafts being the same length ?

About D3.5 if the design of the shaft is the same balance tip to butt.

 

And have the same grip weight. Heavier grip will bring down the swing weight ( check chart! )....
