An unusual pro "look" in the downswing

Just saw this over in the Tour Equipment forum...this range pic from Riviera. Not sure who this player is, but the look was unusual to me....quite a bit more "throwaway" or whatever you want to call it at an early part of the downswing. Now this guy plays on TV on the weekends so I am sure that like a machine he gets the club to impact in a good spot, but anyway with all the threads about lag and positions at P6 and the like I thought this would be of interest. Camera angle might also be a contributor (not sure about that).

My first reaction was that the angle in his wrists looks like they are about to become more acute, as in a 3/4 swing. I.e. he looks like he is about to load the club, he doesnt look like he is casting it at all.

But of course we'd have to see before and after pictures or video... one picture out of context of the full swing would be hard to make any observation, unless you are already familiar with the full swing.

My guess is that he is still completing the backswing in that photo, not into the downswing

Russell Henley, the guy who absolutely destroyed the field in his first event as a PGA Tour member. The picture is his backswing, you can tell by his knees, but here's a video of what he does on the way down.

For sure that could be the case, but his left knee in my original post doesn't look like his left knee in the backswing of that YouTube.

Where? The left knee (from his perspective) is significantly closer to the ball on both, and if it was his downswing they'd be much more even.

It was about the wrist angle...you brought up the knees! :) Anyway, like I said he could in fact be in his backswing, but in the picture of his backswing that I posted his left side is internally rotated and in the first pick at the top it doesn't look that way. That's why I thought it appeared to be a downswing pic, Here is just past impact.

 

 

For purposes of this thread, we could say that his backswing position there is unusual also (with the late set).

It is definitely just a very late set. And yes, it is a little unusual looking.

It isn't casting if the wrists never set. Calvin Peete, Steve Stricker, and others have played with little to no wrist action.
