Mizuno JPX800 Pro - review

MG 1977

Recommended Posts

I play off a 5 handicap and over the past 7-8 years I've always switched back and forth from players CB's to MB's and had numberous Combo's of the two inbetween. The problem I've had is that I prefer the looks of the MB's and the CB's never offer that much more forgviness/performance benefits for me to stay with them. I've also tried all the different AP2's and never stuck with these either as they just didnt out perform standard irons for me. MB's look superb and my bad shot's with them are not really that much worse than with a CB equilvilent so I always gravitate back to them.

Recently I picked up a set of JPX800 Pro's off eBay for a great price. My first impressions were, The blade length is a little longer, hosel a little stubbier and top line a little thicker & squarer than I prefer. I did really like the looks of the triple grind sole as it seemed to look narrower than I was expecting after looking at the rest of the iron. On my initial impressions, I didnt think these would get more than a round or two before being flipped on eBay for a nice profit. However I was totally wrong... These flat out perform better than any set of iron that I have owned. They are a 1/2 club longer than the AP2's I've had in the past and probably a club longer than most of the Cb's and MB's I've had. I know they are probablly a degree or two stronger than my past irons but these seem to fly just as high if not a shade higher than everything else I've owned. The flight is very powerful, I've played a couple of dozen rounds with these now and at least half of those it's been close to 0*c and had quite a strong wind blowing. There is no balloning and the ball is easy to work with a little draw or cut if needed. I now love the looks of the irons at address the larger profile makes me think I cant miss and to be honest they have been pretty much point and shoot since I got them. I played Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) last week on a tough cold windy day. I always think that your par 3 scores are a good way of monitoring performance when playing with new irons. We played from the summer tee's and for the four par 3's I totaled 1 under gross... I only missed one green but it close enough to get up and down.

The looks have really grown on me, even in the bag with the Black and silver cavity showing they look superb. The feel is perfect for me as well, not too clicky and not too mushy, just a nice solid feel that when flushed gives you that great flushed feel you only get from a forged iron.

I would recommend these irons to anybody from a low single figure golfer to somebody wanting to make the transition from a game improvement iron to more of a players iron. These really are a superb set and can be had for a bargain now. If your looking for something different from normal CB's/MB's or GI's for that matter give these a try, like me you might be pleasently suprised.

Nice review! I've had my MX's25 for 6 years and they are a good fit for me (9 handicap).

If I ever get the urge to replace my irons, I'd look at the JPX800 pro's first.

When I went to Mizuno to be fitted I went there with an open mind and said I'd play whatever they told me would help me score the most. I came away with the JPX800 pro and really like them. The 825s don;t look as nice to my eye.

Wedges - Mizuno T22 Raw 51*/08* S Grind, 55*/09* D Grind 59*/09* C Grind - Modus 125 Wedge

I tried some xpros and xforged yesterday against my jpx800 pros inside dicks...they were very nice and I really liked the xforged with the pxi shaft. But the soft feel and the forgiveness of my 800 pros were still standing out. The slightly larger head gives me more confidence but wow , still feel great when you pure them. The only section I'm unsure of are the xp s300.I do like them better then the Dg s300 and the project x but would like to try them with kbs tours, the new pxi, or the matrix recoils...ohh the dilemma...lol.

Any 5 to 15 handicapper should definitely pick these up as a great transitional gi/players iron!

I must admit the one nagging doubt in my mind is over the S300 XP shafts.... I bought a set of s300 Black Gold shafts to replace them but whilst I was waiting for them to arrive, then waiting for me to have the time to fit them the XP's grew on me. I now really like the feel and flight they provide, they do remind me of KBS's, in that they launch a little higher whilst still maintaining the correct amount of spin, not a ballooning flight at all.

I've been playing these for te sat two years after switching from MP-57s. More forgiveness and better feel equal a big win. I haven't even felt the need to demo any other irons since switching.

Nice review! I'm a 6 handicap and have the 800 pros with x100's. With all the talk about the 64's, I've been tempted all winter long to pull the trigger on a set of those. However, I just can't get myself to leave the 800 pros. When I take an honest look at my game I can't ask anything more out of the pros. These are great sticks. I've decided to stop reading the threads on the 64's, re-grip my 800 pros, and work on my short game : ).

I changed this year to JPX 825 Pro's from 800 cast last year. I have Titleist 913D2 driver and 910 woods. I feel the same I'm keeping them and working on my short game. These clubs have stopped my HO'ing.

I went the exact opposite way: switched from JPX pros to MP57s. I definitely like the added loft, more feel and smaller head. I also went from KBS tours to S300s.

Another THRILLED JPX 800 Pro customer here. I'm an 11 Handi and never been happier with a set of irons. Look, feel, and work-ability.

My iron play has never been better. I bought them at the beginning of last season when I was a 13. I took lessons and really worked at the range and at home with them. They are simply amazing. I ordered them with KBS Tour shafts (I soft stepped an X-Flex). I one of those poor souls that are in between flexes when it comes to irons. As far as irons are concerned, my ho'ing ways will stop.

I cannot recommend giving these a test drive for anyone looking for new irons. I can also say I owe it all to my fitter. I was looking at everything but Mizuno JPX 800 Pro's. He handed me the club and the 1st swing was pure and felt amazing. I continued to hit them and they were the best numbers hands down for me. It is going to be a long time before I replace these clubs.

Titleist GT2, Motore Speeder 661

Titleist GT2 16.5*, or Titleist GT2 15* both w/Tensei Blue 75 (sometimes I switch a Rombax Type-X 75S)

Ping G430 (22*), Tensei AV Blue 80HY
Mizuno Pro 245, 4-GW, DG S300
Vokey Spin Mill, 56 (bent to 55), 60
Scotty Cameron Phantom 7

OK. I just played my first round with them. JPX Pros + PXi shafts = smooth, smooth, smooth. I was looking for a little higher ball flight and I am definitely getting that. It was a really windy today so I was struggling a little with distance control, as I am not used to hitting the ball that high. Overall I am really happy with the combo. When I pured them, they felt better than anything I have hit. I am excited to see what I can do with them after I get few more rounds in with them and get the distances dialed in. They really do feel amazing.
