Is my move OTT...?

Im working on getting the club less round me in the takeaway, on 9-3 shots it feels pretty good, and also looks better on the pivot.

Am I standing too close to the ball maybe?

Sorry about the lack of full video, it was about -5 wind chill today and I could hardly feel my hands!

Its not really over the Top. But you ARE above the plane.

And your hands are controlling things too much from the top.

Your right elbow is so far behind just into the downswing, you have to dump the lag and cut across the ball.

DanielEasonP4_zps3cc9d8a8.jpg

You really cut across the ball.

If you look at people in a better P4 ... you'll see the right forearm is vertical

For me, I'd need face on to give any specific help.

Q: Am I standing too close to the ball maybe?

A: I cant see the ball.

Not enough width at top of swing and steep shaft as a result of trying WAY too hard to produce a low and left hand path and CP release.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I thought the same.

I think it is best (essential ?) to learn to get the right elbow into a good position (in front of the right hip) before you learn the low and left release.

A good tool for you to use would be the impact ball.

A cheap and dirty way to keep your right elbow from flying and getting stuck would be to concentrate on keeping your elbows closer together on the backswing. (works for me).

Thanks guys...why do I play this game its a ball ache!

So if I get the arms more behind at the top will this help reduce the work I'm doing to steepen at the moment?

Monte I'm trying to not hit left...im trying to get the club going right from the top in the downswing rather than round and down...I just think I've got a root cause structurally restricting me doing it!

Hands too close to the chest at top of swing. You are on the mythical 2D plane, but you have no room to shallow because your hands are too close to you. Same DTL position, but farther from you.

A couple things to look at.

In the first image I have a yellow line showing the position of your head and Luke at the top of the back swing.

In the image far left you get your head to far forward in the down swing, notice how Luke keeps his head behind the ball.
The next one you are flipping through impact (yellow line) and you can see Luke hase a flat wrist(blue line).
You also are not shifting your weight into your left side. You can see Lukes hip past his hands after impact and your hands are in front of your hips.

Here is a drill to help with the flip. This will also help you get your weight more left as well. When doing this drill make sure to shift and rotate your hips into you left side. The hips start the down swing.

Here is another drill for the down swing.

Thanks Allen,

I seriously need to start getting out of my comfort zone then, when you show a comparison i'm awful. A root cause exists, I just can't seem to work out what it is, and I suspect it could be that I'm not turning correctly in the backswing to create the width. As previous posters have commented.

I have this in me, I can get into said positions, I just struggle with timing it all. With Montes BDT drill I struggle with this between the D and T, it goes to s*** and i just can't get left side.

Allen showed a GREAT picture of your head position. If you get wider, that should get better. As far as the dump is concerned...you have no room to do it and that's why it goes to ****.

Monte, this is lightbulb territory! I can't thank you all enough...

I goto the gym 4 times a week, I have no excuses to be not able to turn acceptably to give me the room.

What cautions beckon when (not if) i begin to get into that position? Is it push right territory if I dont turn onto my right side enough?

Daniel, here is another feel you can grasp onto.

Look at picture Allen showed of you next to Luke. Notice if you draw a vertical line where the right shoulder is.

Luke's right shoulder is closer to being over his right foot, where yours is almost over your left heel.

As you get a little wider, you will have the sense your right shoulder is more behind your right foot like Luke's and thus your head and spine will be in a better place.

Cheers...So its a feeling of pushing into a wall with my right shoulder when going back...but keeping my lower body stable where it is.

To me, your practice swings at around the 20 second mark don't look too bad at all. They actually look like they might produce a draw but then your actual swing is completely different because you transition too fast (I do the exact same thing) and you end up cutting across it. I'd say you should hit some pitches with your 'practice swing,' keeping it slow and easy, and then gradually increase your backswing length.

I don't think it's right to compare his swing to Luke Donald, TOTALLY different actions.

Looks like you take the club too far outside the hands getting it onto a terrible plane with your right arm too connected so you have no room. Then hold the face open through impact leading with the heel... looks like a bunker shot :) LOL Looks like you're so across the line and swinging left you have to hold off the club rather than allowing your pivot to square up the face.

Who told you to glue your right arm to your side then?

Either way [in MY opinion] it's not right to show someone who has his head behind the ball (and considerable spine tilt away from the target ie;still in forward flexion) to someone who is trying to make a centered turn around a stable axis and side tilting.

Dan's issue is that he's trying to swing left with the handle but he's shortened his right arm so much by having it glued against his ribs that it's not physically possible to get the handle of the club sufficiently forwards. It also makes his backswing look somewhat ungainly. Freeing that arm will help stop his over swing and somewhat calm his head too.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. Ever pro/great ball striker shifts there hips/weight to the left to create secondary tilt and there head is behind the ball at impact. I was not conserned with the back swing, I was showing how he is moving his head in front of the ball at impact.

Sure, I can see that but with his right arm stuck he'll never get the club to the ball if he has any secondary tilt... so he's chasing the ball with his upper body to get the club to the ball. It's his right arm and not his head position, his head (and secondary tilt) will be correct if he sorts the arms.. in my opinion of course.

It's great i've got two people argueing over my game here...I feel like Tiger Woods.

Joking apart, I take both ends of this on board...I'm trying to get space coming down to to swing the ellusive arc not left straight away per se.

Happygolf, Nobody has told me to keep the right arm close, its all in my view a side effect, I want to certainly strive to get into the positions with secondary tilt that I see great ball strikers and Luke is on example of many.

Bottom line I think on this is that I'm not turning correctly in the first place and keeping the arms extended, so everything coming down is going to need to look how it does, and also a posted also stated im outracing lower body with the upper body which is where Im rushing to steepen up.

The amount of areas i've looked at now this could be totally wrong.

Working the turn here...

Forget about the downswing please, I was purely focussed on the move back...even shots coming down felt like I was getting a bit more time and solid contact/weight transfer.

I guess the next step is to coordinate this with creating some room with my hip turn?

It looks better but you are taking it back to much. Look at Tiger.

You want to be more in this position.
