The Woodlands Area Public Course

I will soon be relocating to The Woodlands, and have been looking at some of the private clubs.

 

But I was wanting some opinions on area public course, something within a 15 minute drive from the Woodlands area.

Augusta Pines is great.
Woodforest Golf course is one of the best courses in Houston.

There are probably more golf courses within 30min of The Woodlands than there are within 30min of any other area in Texas.

I just moved to The Woodlands in July and still trying to find a great affordable public course. The Village near Conroe was a good one but conditions have gone down hill recently. Wedgewood is the other that is nearby, decent, and affordable.

I am finding the conditions of public courses here are much different than the public courses back home in the Sacramento area. Some of the public courses back there would be on par with the private course conditions here.

If any of you Woodlands area guys are up for a get together for some golf hit me up. I still don't know anyone outside of my work who golfs. Getting them to play is like coordinating a freaking wedding. They can usually only play on the third Sunday of the month when there is a full moon and the wind is blowing from the east. So I have been looking to catch up with some other people who go out more often,

Join the golf Channel Amateur Tour- Houston. You get to meet golfers from all over Houston, and get to try different courses all over the Houston area. There's usually two tournaments a month on Saturdays.

Didn't say they were worse. There are a handful of public courses, a couple of muni courses too, that are on par condition wise with some of the private courses in the area. These public courses back in Sac would be the $40-$50 public tracks.

It was more of an observation that the local public courses in about that same range just don't have I've same conditions. And it very well may be that the weather here makes it tougher to keep up a public course without dumping a bunch of money into it like private courses do.

But right now I am not even picky, just trying to get out and play anywhere I can.

I'm going to chime in here. I know you said 15 minutes but this place ia 18 miles from woodlands pw and 45...Texas National golf club, VERY nice course, quiet, after 3pm $15, after 5pm $10. You can't beat that. Its nice for the price trust me.

Right now Canongate is offering a $600 start up and $189 a month if anyone is still looking. With that it cost you $26 for green fee and cart which is not bad and you get 5 courses to play.

+1 on Pather Trail. The other course on the property is good too. I think it's called the Oaks? I could be wrong there but it is Oak something. I thought the Oak(?) course was kept up better, but Panther Trail was more challenging.

Strongly considering the Canongate membership. I have played Lake Windcrest and plan on playing Panther Trail this week. Seems like you can't beat the price. Can anyone give me any feedback?

Canongate really stresses course conditions. All of their courses are always in good shape. You really can't beat the price either.

I joined a couple of months ago and am very happy with it so far. Price is great and courses are always in good shape. I also like all the special events they have to try and get all the members together. Can't go wrong for under $200 a month with access to 5 courses.

I second that Woodforest is one of the best courses in Houston, and not expensive to join. Great Place!

Although it's probably half an hour from The Woodlands, La Torretta out off of 105 is in terrific shape right now. It has to be as nice as anything within 45 miles and it can be had for cheap through GolfNow or TeeOff (EZLinks).

It's a gem.

Golf Club of Houston is decent drive from Woodlands and a great course to play.
