Rusting my wedge

how do u get that nice brown red color every time i try its a darg wierd green color that looks like s*** :)

what are you doing to it to turn it green? I would leave it out in a rain storm, make sure you protect the grip and shaft though, if you need a way to protect the grip and shaft give me a pm.

i dno i put a wet rag over itand i left it in a rainstorm and the same thing happened it was a little red but still green ish

You must have some screwed up rain in Texas :)what kind of green? I would also try salt water I have heard that has helped, how long did you let it sit?

When i rusted mine, i tried salt water method. That one rusted it, but I got orange color. Then it started to rain for like three days. So I just left them outside in the rain for 2 days. Afterwards, I used light scrubbing with scotch brite to get rid of surface rust. Looks great now.

just do it when you go to sleep... unless you only sleep like in 1 hr intervals you'll be fine. also i bet if you some crushed brick in it, it'll add some red flavor to it hahahaha

rather than leaving it in the rain, i found giving it a good dunk in a rain puddle does the same job rusting and not have to leave a club out in the rain. as everyone has said, you need time.

For most oil can wedges a salt soak will work well. How long it takes depends on the condition of the finish. If it has a chrome finish, it will have to be removed. Removing chrome will require sandblasting or toxic chemicals and is not easy to do right.

If it is the origianl tour chrome version, the chrome has to be removed before it will rust. It may rust on the face where it is worn, but will not rust all over.

what about rusting cast clubs, not chromed or anything, just an old set to tinker around on, would that be a possibility?

Many cast clubs are still chromed or plated. If it is not chromed, saltwater. Be patient, it may take a while to eat through whatever finish the club has. You can either soak it directly in the saltwater or soak a towel in saltwater, wet the clubhead and cover it with salt, then wrap it in the towel. The towel will be ruined by the way. The salt will promote oxidation. It may take a few overnight treatments.

i'm just curious as to why you guys are rusting your clubs? while i know and posted about it, i just don't see the benefit of doing this... i actually "coked" my wedges every few months so i wouldn't have to deal with the rust on my now retired 588 rtg wedge.... the rusting just bothers me what does it do for the rest of you guys?

I haven't tried this myself, so I can't attest to success, but I've heard of some people soaking the head in coke or pepsi, but be really careful with that because I think it rusts really quickly if you try it.

NOOOOOO!!!! if you soak a wedge in Coke that will remove the rust!!!! Pepsi will do nothing probably.

just use some lemons or vinegars any acids in fact.

 

then add some salt .. and some damp cloth over it.

 

I use muriatic acid.. didnt take 5 mins.

Be careful with the Bleach. I did that with a Cleveland RTG years ago and it was

so corrosive that it actually removed metal in spots. I've found that it's best to use

a light salt water soloution. Dip it and let it air dry, and repeat........

Well part of it is cosmetic. With a raw wedge you get no glare. But they also have a better feel to me around the green. Chrome is a very hard surface and I hit enough balls to tell the difference. A raw wedge will wear out faster though as they lack the protection of a chrome or finished wedge.

If you have a wedge with a finish (black or oil can) then first get some naval jelly. Apply it and rinse quickly. Next wrap a wet salted towel around it overnight and there you go.
