I honestly think it has a lot to do with the quality of instruction. Too many instructors just focus on positions and tweaking this and that. I've been to them. They didn't explain things. I finally got one that went into GREAT depth of how the swing is supposed to be done and why. Taught me about ball flight and even a very simple explanation as to WHY you shank it. As in what exactly you are doing when that happens..

Now if I ever shank I know exactly what I'm doing and exactly how to fix it. Shanks are no longer a problem. Tho they creep in because it is a swing fault.. I can step away slow down and solve the problem on my own..

It doesn't do anyone any good to just keep hitting ove rand over and shanking over and over. It's time to get analytical with your swing.

bottom line.. go to the pro, but start asking WHY. People I think would not get stuck in the shanks so much..

Seem to be a lot of people with shank issues...wondering if this is some seasonal diesease which is linked to the urge to get a place in The Masters this year?

It's really simple.

Most golfers get the club way too inside. Most golfers pull the handle really hard as a result of hit impulse, wanting to hit it farther and trying to create lag and shaft lean artificially. Most golfers are trying hard to swing inside out to hit a draw. Most of the pontificated "more efficient" swing models will exacerbate getting too far inside going back and pulling the handle.

If that's not a recipe for the shanks, I don't know what it.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Spot on, and also to the OP's point, this happens more for me at the beginning of the year. Everything is a little off, and distance is down (cold + rough swing) so you try to 'hit" it more and tada: shankopotamus

Yes, well it was my turn today. I have been hitting indoors 3 times a week for the past 6 weeks, took a few lessons and have been makeing some good progress.

Hosel rockets came visiting today. Usually I go into shock and cannot recover when they show up but I decided to laugh it off and try to find the cause.

Thank goodness for this site and forum as I realize that a lot of avid golfers with decent swings get the "laterals" and the faults causing them can be corrected through the suggestions here and elsewhere.

Our Pro thinks I am pushing my left knee too far forward (towrds the ball) on the backswing and this might be getting my weight out towards the ball just enough to cause problems. Oh, well, another thing to work on at the range.

If I can't correct it, I will be back posting a video and hoping for help from GolfWrx!!

From that image I can discern one thing. The shaft is across the line and is an easy place to steepen the shaft from.

I would say you maybe need to create more space when steepening on the way down.

Have you got side on or videos?

Dosn't look like you've turned into the right hip much to get the lower body forward and allow you to avoid the sudden steepening up.

Youtube golf instruction video
only shows a ball distance or direction
of about 3 inches

Thanks Monti and Daniel. I need to learn to edit a video to make it shorter before posting but here is a side shot[attachment=1596587:image.jpg]
