Anyone a member?

I checked into their Jr membership and it doesn't sound too bad, it's about what I pay for clubcorp. I want to hear the good and bad of the place if anyone has any insight.

What type of condition does it stay in all year, how are the members, any daily games, etc?

Not a member but I think I read somewhere that the average handicap among the members is around 3 and there is always a money game(s)

Not a member either, but it's a great course, one of the best, they keep it in fantastic condition (I've played it but it's been several yrs), I lived right by it for a while and used to jog around the course (on the streets, not on the course) and was always amazed at how well they kept it. It has a great repution as being a great course to play, and great CC to be a member.

How much is it? I was also looking at The Woodlands just b/c they have all the courses and it gives you more options.

Im not a member but I can tell you that Champions is one of those old school country clubs. Having grown up in Houston, back in the 70s and 80s when you said "Champions" you were talking about THE place to be as far as country clubs. The place has hosted a Ryder Cup a US Amateur and a host of other tour events. Some of the big boys of golf in the 50s and 60s use to be out there. Jack Burke Jr and Jimmy Demaret I believe.

Champions is amazing. The Cypress course is the famous one, but I really honestly prefer Jackrabbit. Good to see it got recognition in the top courses in Texas! My best friend's family lives on the course, and have played many times. A friend of mine just joined as a junior member and I think the initiation was $5k - honestly not too bad for a top notch club! I would be a member if I could afford it.

I'm a member at Champions. I grew up there as a kid and joined as a junior member as soon as I was out of school.

If you are looking for a club that has top-of-the-line amenities (clubhouse, fitness center, lounges, etc.) and a staff that caters to your every need, Champions might not be the best place for you. If you are looking for a club with a die-hard golfing culture that lives and breathes the game, you can't beat Champions. Yes, there are newer, more exclusive, more scenic clubs in town, but none of them come anywhere close to Champions in terms of playing the game in as pure of a setting as possible.

As someone stated above, there is a handicap criteria you have to meet. Last I heard it is a 13. This isn't to say you are kicked out if you go over that, but you have to show you have the ability/skill to play to at least that level. There are no exceptions to this rule.

If memory serves me right, the initiation fee for a junior membership is $5K. There are two plans for monthly dues; either you pay half dues (about $250ish/month), or you pay full dues and the extra half goes toward you initiation fee when you have to upgrade to full membership status.

Also of note, we just hired on a new Director of Golf/Head Pro (Charlie Epps) and a new Course Superintendent (Randy Samoff). Both came over from Redstone. Charlie is also the swing coach for Angel Cabrera.
