Scary review of Titleist 913D3

I'm going to warn you - this review will not contain phrases like "low spin bomber" or "gamer" or "low spin monster", etc. If you wish to continue read, do so at your own risk.

 

I am not a believer that the technological changes over the last 5 years or so make a drastic difference in how you hit the ball from driver to driver. The golf technology industry to me mirrors the bodybuilding supplement industry in a way.

 

I played an r7 Superquad and liked the driver quite a bit. For reference I am 6'1", no idea on swing speed, a solid drive of mine goes 265 or 270, really good can get up to 285 - 290, but those are few and far between. For other reference I hit my 21 degree hybrid 225, 4-iron 205, 5-iron 195, 6-iron 185, 7-iron 175, 8-iron 160-165, 9-iron 150, and PW 135.

 

I bought a 44.5" titleist 913d3 without testing (I know, golf suicide!) with the white diamana 72 in stiff flex, 10.5 degree. Brought it out to the range today. I honestly bought it because I love the look of the club and it just felt like time for a change - I was not expecting 50 more yards.

 

My observations: It has generally has a lower, more boring trajectory than the superquad, which is what I was looking for. I must admit my mishits (especially to the right) seemed to hold on and stay more in control than my r7. I had a few drives that I thought I nutted, but would die out shorter than I expected - I am not sure if this is a result of the range balls or not, and I was hitting into a slight breeze. There were a few mishits where I really still felt like the ball had a much more penetrating flight than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise.

 

Overall, I really think this driver feels as good as it looks. Do I think it's going to give everyone 30 extra yards? s*** no. Maybe 5 to 10 for me (mostly on roll), with a bit more control. Looking at the clubface at the end of my session, there weren't a whole lot of mishits on the face, which may have been aided by a slightly shorter club, so perhaps I don't know how bad I can hit this thing off the planet yet.

 

Either way, I'm giving this club the thumbs up. Great looking, feels good, seems to have good control, inspires confidence.

You hit a 5i 195 but only hit your driver 265?

He's at 44.5" with his driver, but if they irons are half and inch longer then would make sense, he's 6.1 after all.

Yes - 265 to 270 on an average, solid hit. If I catch one really well 280 to 290 as I said.

I also find that most people take their longest drive and use that as their average. The next time I play with someone who hits their average drive as far as they claim will be the first.

Nice review. Why did you choose the D3 over the D2? Smaller clubhead?

Yes - I did see both in a store and have always liked a slightly smaller clubhead on the driver.

I should also mention that some reviews said the 72 diamana white felt like hitting a 2x4, but for me it felt perfectly fine. I actually looked at both the 913d2 and d3 in a store awhile back, and thought that the diamana felt a little heavy/stiff, but when I actually hit it, everything felt great. Perhaps it felt a little better with cutting .5" off.

Wouldn't say I'm anti-WRX, but yes, I do think some of the claims of how much technology can improve people's games gets way overstated in certain reviews. It can be hard to sort through recommendations when people are claiming they go from massive hooks/slices to not being able to miss a fairway and adding 30+ yards.

I would have been thrilled to have hit the range and been bombing my driver way past my old one.

That said I really liked the club and would recommend its purchase to anyone.

I for one think golf club technology has has improved in the last few years, so have body building supplements.

This is the scariest review ever. I'm going to have nightmares that my Ping is shorter than the 913.
