Adjustable drivers ..Tightening the screw before round ...

Ezgolfer

Recommended Posts

My buddy told me on the range today , to tighten my driver shaft by using the tool before every round . I was reluctant intially , however after using the tool was shocked that the driver head was more lively and felt heavy after tightening the screw.

He told me a titelist rep was the one who told him this information ..

I guess there is loosening of the shaft during a round as the ball is severely punished and therefore frequent tuning is important .

I was wondering if you guys do this before every round or occasionally ..

Very true statement, especially after hitting balls on the range with any of the adjustable headed clubs. I check mine quite frequently because they do get loose. Not sure performance wise the difference a tight screw makes, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt

What if it's not obviously loose? Is it possible to overtighten these or does the torque screwdriver/tool prevent that?

Tighten until the torque wrench clicks and you are golden.

Sounds like a little Loctite would also do the trick. You only need a very small amount.

I will start doing it.
Used to carry an i-mix wrench as one time the head had come totally loose.
The i-mix system was notorious for working itself loose. I had a head loosen significantly during a tournament, so I started tightening before every round after that happened.

I haven't noticed the need to tighten any of the TM woods I've had the last couple of years, but it wouldn't hurt anything to do it before play.

Nah... use the GREEN!

In all seriousness... Loctite and aluminum are not a match made in heaven. Personally I'd rely on the torque wrench.

Granted the systems incorporate a torque limit, I don't just tighten initially when I check my clubs. I have noticed that after the click there is just a little more snugging going on. I back it off a little and then retighten until it "clicks". Even though when you check it to be tight it clicks, doing this repeatedly can (in my opinion) over tighten the nut over time. I have the Titleist and iMix systems in several clubs.

One range session and about 15 balls with the driver and it sounded like I had something loose in the head...took back to car and tightened up the weights, then took head off and put back one...good as new. Scared me..it really sounded like something in the head. never go to that range again...ROCKS! for balls. some were almost SMOOTH!

what part is aluminum? isn't it a steel bolt threading into a steel insert (in an aluminum adapter)

This... I am a cyclist and work with torque wrenches on carbon components, frequently. The absolute proper way to use a torque wrench is to loosen, THEN tighten until the proper torque (click) is achieved.

My bets are on the loosening happens more frequently for those who are constantly changing shafts or adjusting lofts but due to the constant changes, its alwaus tight. it's those who leave well enough alone that notice them loosening

This is good advice! I work in the cycling industry and torque is very important when clamping carbon. This is the proper way to make sure the bolt is at the proper torque without risk of over tightening.

I was at the range today and after reading the posts on this page I loosened mine and then retighten it until I heard the torque tool click. Wow there really was difference, my drives have been getting higher the last month or so and I could not understand what I was doing differently. I also had lost about 20 yards in distance. After tightening my driver the drives were flatter and longer with good roll. The driver never felt loose but after tightening there was a slight difference in the impact sound. Mine is the 2012 Taylormade RBZ tour adjustable 10.5.

This has happened to me before. I though there was something loose inside the head, but it turned out I just needed to re-tighten the head. They can get loose, but I wouldn't say they get loose after every round. It would still be beneficial to check it once in a while though.
