Do you have a "go-to" club around the greens?

Last time out got me thinking. Whenever I’m within 25yds or so of the green, I’m grabbing my 55* 90% of the time. I’m decent around the greens, so I was wondering if I’m in the minority and need to learn to hit more shots with other clubs.

I noticed a few times during the coverage this week. The caddie would hand the player a wedge immediately when they missed a green. Those players must have that goto wedge for around the greens. Maybe that is the way to go?

I really only carry the 56* for the awkward 100 yard shot between the two

I like to mix it up and pick a club based on the required shot in hand and the lie. That's impossible with just one club - or at least makes your shot somewhat harder. Sometimes, it can be something as obvious as a putter....

I don't see how one could have a default club without assessing the situation. Is the ball sitting up, down? Uphill or downhill lie? Are you short-sided, or have plenty of green to work with? There are a lot of factors that come into play.

Lately, I've been getting a lot of use out of my hybrid around the greens. If I have a decent lie within 2 feet of the fringe, I will generally putt with my hybrid, as the loft and club design gets top spin on the ball, and carries it over the rough.

Before this year I was 48-52-58 and used my 58* Vokey for 95% of greenside shots, virtually never using the 52. I have 54-60 now, and the toughest thing is something I never dealt with before, deciding on the club to hit. Both wedges are incredibly versatile, and it'll take time to sort that out.

60* vokey. I dont practice alot and this is what feel the most comfortable.

Sure, I find myself going to one club for most situations though. Of course there is the occasional time where I'll be short sided or need more of a run out that will determine a different club. The ball sitting up or down doesn't really matter to me all that much though.

56 Deg Lynx wedge. Crappy wedge, but one of the 1st clubs I bought, I feel more comfortable with it than any other club in my bag. Just open the face to adjust distance

I hit 8 iron down to lob wedge, but when the heat is on, I depend on my 54 in many cases.

I basically use a 56* unless I absolutely cant b/c I need to lob it up more, then I grab the 60*

yeah...I noticed that as well, wasn't it on Tiger's shot on 14 that came up a bit short, where Joey immediatel handed him a wedge...And I thought the same thing you mentioned it, he already decided on the club without seeing the shot.

To answer the orignal question, yes...I use my 54 degree for everything inside 85 yards, including the bunker. It has the great DSG grind by Cleveland that lets me open it up when I need to.

99% of the time it's my SW, the LW is only for extreme problems (short sided bunkers, super thick rough 20 yard pitches, etc) , it's like a tow truck.

If possible I putt with my hybrid, if not then 56 degree sand wedge.

Most of the time its my 60* 588 RTG. Been getting cute with my hybrid recently.

58* Ping g20 lob. I can do all the shots with it and it could be my only wedge. I even had a 30 "putt" round using the edge of this putter to roll on the greens in a 3-club tournament. It took a lot of concentration but I putted better with it than my regular.

I would say that being able to have a "go-to" club for around the greens is great. It means that you have a club you are comfortable enough to hit ALL the shots with. If you can control one club well enough to hit ANY shot you need around the greens, kudos to you! I think that will make it easier to be creative. I always use a 52 or 56. I'm not comfortable enough to hit ANY shot with either one, so I have to switch between the two depending on what I need.
