Serious questions, so sick of this....

Getting fit is great, but it is not the end all. I too decided to get fit and spent a lot of cash on the fitting and a new set of irons. I've been playing for over 30 years and the fitting was very close to "my own fitting numbers" done through trial and error. I know the new clubs are fit properly, but they are just not right. Is it my swing, could be, but not for the first 1/4 of the season ( I play off a 3). Scores are the same, but they are not right, why? I let the fitter talk me into his ideas, this doesn't make him wrong, but I know what works and should have stuck to my guns. You want to fix the " fitting issue" I say fix the swing first, then change your clubs and stick with them. Good luck.

The shaft you are playing, the ZZ-65 is actually similar in flex to the S300 that you think is "way too stiff" (although it is lighter, so it launches higher). So are you even sure these adjustments you're making are helping? Isn't it more likely that if you hit "moon balls" with almost every combo it might be your swing?

Stop the search for the right equipment and devote your efforts toward improving your game.

I kept switching my irons but the problem was my swing - too flat, no lag and not enough wrist hinge with the irons. Worked on the swing and stuck with Adams CB3 and loving my iron game.

Thanks for the tips guys.

As for lessons, I completely understand. However, what I want to try and accomplish (not sure if this is even possible) is to eliminate the "not properly fitted" variable from the equation.

I hit my G15's pretty good for the most part. But in the back of my head, I always wonder, "are these Ping ZZ65 shafts soft stepped 1x" holding me back? Should I have gotten them soft stepped 2x? I selected this shaft based on reading these forums, that was it. Loss of distance due to shafts not fitting my swing profile? i.e. I swing my driver around 95mph I think. When purchasing those shafts, I never considered "load", etc.. and the multitude of other variables that does into a proper fitting.

I guess I just want to ensure that I am not missing out by not having the equipment that matches my swing. Wasted so much money by not doing it right the first time. Lesson learned.
Here's the problem... until you get your swing right there is no way to know if you are fitted properly. For example, you may be hitting off the heel right now but that could be a product of a swing quirk so getting clubs adjusted flatter to compensate for that condition would be a big mistake in the end.

Having worked temporarily in a job where I was around a launch monitor daily I can say that I was very rarely surprised by what a piece of equipment did.

That is to say...

1.) If you can't get a highly accurate sense of a club by looking at a companies website and doing your homework on these forums then you aren't trying hard enough.

2.) If you're honest about your golf game and your swing, you should be able to make a 'basic' fitting work really well for you. (Loft, Lie, Shaft Type, Shaft Flex, Club-head, etc)

3.) If you're a mid- or high-handicap golfer you may not find your scores drop even with better equipment and better-looking golf shots. That's just how it goes.

I suspect your amount of play isn't enough to have a repeatable swing. Heck, when I've gone more than a couple of weeks without swinging a club I sometimes feel like I'm starting over.

You said "I want to do it right!!! proper fitting, lessons, and play".

Reverse those items - IMO, you need to be playing or practicing at least once a week (and be doing it for a while) to really get the benefit of a custom fitting.

This board can definitely instill doubt in your clubs - it's filled with stories of people unhappy with their clubs, made the switch and tales of what happened. But over the long run, unless they went from a really poor fitting to a really good one, I don't see gear making more than a few strokes of difference. Now if someone is hitting more balls while searching for the new clubs or playing more with their shiny new toys - that's a more likely cause for the improvement.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Hope to be able to practice and play more once I move out to the burbs this fall. It's just too much of a hassle to go to either Chelsea Piers range or Randalls Island range.

As for playing maybe 5 rounds a year, that was really only the last two years. Played a ton when I first started out but once I moved into the city, the number of rounds went down.

Um.... Is this a serious topic?

Top tour pros who play a gazillion times a year, have all the technology in the world to fit their clubs to their game, struggle.....

And you are blaming your clubs that you are not properly fit and been playing for 6 years at 5 rounds a year?

Even Sergio would be saying your complaining is ridiculous.

Wasn't really a serious topic.

Where in any of my posts above was I complaining? or blaming my clubs?

simply asked two questions which are contained in my initial post.

I played them and after every bad round (which is like 90% of the time), I always reached the same conclusion, it MUST be the irons!!! :D on to the next set. vicious cycle. again, I know most here can relate.

Flava, notice the smiley face after the phrase "MUST be the irons". That was me trying to be funny. Sorry, I failed at that. But the more serious question was, "COULD it possibly be the irons?" i.e. wrong shaft? wrong lie? etc....

Again, most likely, it's the swing.

Tom...is there a fitter in Orlando, FL about whom you feel similarly?

Where to start?
The place to start is the next time you have the time to head out of the city for a golf related reason, this time head over to see Tim Mosel in Denville, NJ (973-586-1700 - www.timmosel.com ). Your post indicates you have doubts about your equipment and getting the most for your money. For a very long time, Tim has been routinely removing golfers' doubts about their clubs because he is one of the very best in the whole country at doing that. And he's been doing it for a very reasonable price so you don't have to have doubts about that part of it either.

I feel your pain, living in NYC and trying to play golf is an awful combo. Its a full day to play anywhere decent. The guys on this site have no clue the struggles we go through just to play golf when living in this city. That being said, I can recomend Novo golf just over the GWB and up the Palisades parkway for a fitting. They are very expensive but carry all the high end Japanese stuff and do great build jobs. They have a trackman and you get fit in a "Nike Oven" type place where you hit balls on a range.

Yes I can imagine because I've done it many times!!

Just so you WRXers have an idea of what we go through on a weekly basis.

Wake up, walk with clubs through crowed street to subway station, go down tiny escalator trying to avoid killing people with your clubs. Getting on the subway packed like a sardine, people giving you dirty looks because your clubs are taking up room for one more person to squeeze in. Get to Penn Station (more navigation through streets and crowed penn station). Wait on line for 20 min to buy a train ticket ($~20 round trip), stand there like a dog staring at the board to see which track the train will come on. As soon as they announce the track, run (more navigation) to try and beat everyone else and get a seat. Realize you have a golf bag on your back and you can’t run very fast. End on not getting a seat on the train and end up standing for the ~45 min train ride. Get off the train, wait for a cab to take you to the course (~$7), finally get to the course (Need to be there 1 hour before tee time), PRAY they have an opening on the Black course, realize the next time on the Black is 4 hours from now, try to rationalize waiting, decide that’s too long and regrettably to playing the Yellow. Finish in 6.5 hours and do the above in reverse. NYC, best city in the world (except if you like to play golf!!!).

They rest of you have it easy...
