Help a Newbie out...

Would a piece of g10 phenolic material be the gamma fire insert?
or is there some additional magic or process that needs to be added?

after a quick search of patents with Lloyd "bud" Winter 's name there seems to be none for a insert.
BUT I could be wrong

I have heard the term G10 in referring to gamma fire inserts, but never heard it in reference
to phenolic - they are two different materials. Are you mixing the two up?

Also - Lloyd "Bud" Winter - are you referring to the hall of fame track coach? Is that a marking/
stamping on the club?

Re: I don't get the connection between him and your Penna Golf club.

Difference between Phenolic and Green Glass (G10 - a "trade name for the material") is that the
former is linen and resin based, and the latter is fiberglass and resin based.

From all the plastics companies I have researched G10 is a form of phenolic, i thought "Phenolic" had to do with the type or material within the resin (having phenol in them), but trade names and industry habits may not be technically accurate - I surely know that one

That same Bud is the guy who promoted the gamma fire inserts; there is a old golf rag from the late 70's /early 80's that did a write up on the gamma fire insert and him as the promoter and alluded to a patent ( LOL not by him though)

When i got my Penna it had a sorry insert that had been resawn poorly, I have a desire to replace it with a
Gamma Fire one

You are more right than I am technically. I would bet it is Phenol resin in both the "Phenolic"
and "Green Glass" inserts - difference just between the fiberglass and linen mixed with it. I
guess Phenolic insert is more of a generally accepted term for the insert than totally accurate,
same for the Green Glass term.

Actually I don't think it ever occurred to me that it could be Phenol resin in the Glass inserts.
At the Belvedere Golf Club in Michigan a couple of weeks ago, I showed Mike Just my driver
and the first thing he noticed was, as he put it, was "the G10 glass insert".

I did not know that Lloyd "Bud" Winter ever promoted the Gamma Fire inserts - you learn something
new everyday.

Have fun with your Penna and post pictures for us when you get the glass insert in it.

Bumping this old thread as I have just acquired a Terry Gilbert driver with an unusual insert I am trying to identify.

I did wonder if it may be a gamma fire glass insert but don't have another to compare it to. 

There is mesh weave visible and the colour is similar to stereo typical GF insert. However, the presence of face screws may suggest otherwise?

I would welcome any advice.

Otherwise, it is a nice block with good grain and a smattering of carbon.

I'm siding with you here, that certainly looks like a fiberglass block. Whether it's a gammafire specifically... Well.

 

Here's a photo of one lifted from eBay, you can't really see it in the photo but it's a custom persimmon with the Gamma Fire name on the top of the club.

I pickup up a couple of old Spalding’s, likely early 50’s that had inserts like that, thinking that someone in the 1970’s maybe added Gamma Fire inserts.  They had that cross-hatched look but I don’t think they were Gamma Fires.

 

Now I do have a set that say Gamma Fire and they don’t have the crosshatched look, more of a deep, thick glass look.  Here are some pics but I’ll try again when I can get them out in the sun.

Pretty wild looking. Must have some serious epoxy in there with so little continuous grain after the neck!
