Adjustable driver - screw coming loose...is this a common problem?

I was an avid golfer 15 years ago who just got back into it and one of the things that surprised me when I went looking at new equipment was the adjustable driver thing, but I went with it.

 

I ended up with a callaway razr fit xtreme. I've had it a couple of weeks and used it on the range multiple times. Today I noticed the screw that screws into the hosel to adjust the clubface angle had come loose. I used the tool that came with the driver to tighten it and it seems solid again, but I'm wondering if this is a common problem?

its threaded and takes a consistent abuse, physics says that they're going to get loose from time to time just due to the repetitive force against the fastener. It's a bit of an annoyance but I check before every round because it literally only takes 3 seconds to do and just for the piece of mind. It's one extra step but if you're benefiting from the adjustable technology I'm sure you'll find it isn't nearly as big of a deal as it seems. I've had 4 adjustable drivers since the r9 came out and every single one I've done this to after my r9 became dislodged and I had to go collect if from the rough in front of the fairway unscathed thankfully

My belief is find your right setting then set it and forget it.As OP said, if you continue to drill, in and out, over time the fitting will loosen. Call Callaway. They will fix, repair or replace. OEMs are pretty good about this.

do you turn the the wrench until it clicks?

I have 4 or 5 adjustable drivers and 5 fairway woods that are adjustable and I have never had a issue with them coming loose. Are you sure your tightening them enough, you need to tighten until the wrench clicks 1 or 2 times.

Thanks for all the replies. In response to the questions of whether or not i'm tightening it enough "until the wrench clicks" - are you referring to the sound that is made when the screw is so tight that the wrench temporarily comes undone and "clicks" into the next set of notches in the screw, or is there some inherent clicking mechanism internal to the wrench that clicks? If the former, yes (although i'm not sure it was tightened to that point when i bought the driver), and if the latter, no

yes to the first, its a torque wrench, meaning once you torque the screw down tight enough the wrench will click letting you know you have tightened it enough. it doesnt matter if it clicks one time or 23 times, it will be just as tight.

perhaps the screw just isnt threading correctly if it is clicked but still not staying locked in

Thanks for clarifying. Like I said its a brand new club and this has only happened once so far, so I will get it tight and monitor it.

Check the rubber washer under the screw with the head off. If it's too far down the thread it may be a tad loose. You can manually tighten it pushing it with a tee or such while holding the wrench in place at the top of the screw.

I find the callaway screw comes loose more often then the TM or Nike driver

The deal with torquing screws or bolts is you are trying to slightly stretch the fastener and put it in it's design tension.

In building race motors you actually measure the bolt stretch. Since this is not practical for some fasteners the next best thing is to torque to some spec.

When doing this is important that the threads of the fastener are clean and dimensionally correct so the torque you apply goes into stretching the fastener not overcoming some crappy thread condition. To this end it is common practice to lube the threads before torquing. This is not commonly done with golf clubs but it should be to avoid the kind of problem you may be experiencing. A small drop of some kind of oil or silicone lubricant should be sufficient.

It's not uncommon. But if it happens frequently, I'd recommend a good cleaning of the screw and the threads of the adapter with acetone or iso-propyl or denatured alcohol. And if that still doesn't keep it from re-occurring - then use some loctite blue.
