Working in Dallas for 3 weeks - help me maximize my golf!

I've just been tapped on the shoulder.."sorry for the short notice"...can you go to Dallas for the next three weeks. I'll be working adjacent to DFW and it will pretty much be a 9-5 gig. Anyone have any thoughts on a good place to stay/play on daily basis. Would need a grass range. I live in NYC, so the idea of going straight to the course after work every day has me pumped up.

 

I've been looking at Sky Creek Ranch as a reasonably priced course with a grass range, but there are no decent hotels near there.

 

I also have no idea about traffic, so don't want to waste time stuck every day.

Can you be more specific about which part of DFW you'll be staying in? It's a pretty big place that you don't want to spend a lot of time driving in, so that will definitely impact the recommendations.

Please let us know where you'll be working as that makes a huge difference. DFW is a very big place (roughly 60-70 miles E-W and N-S) so don't want you getting stuck in traffic all day.

And don't worry...unlike NYC there are plenty of grass ranges available :-)

By DFW I think he means the airport since he mentioned Sky Creek Ranch.

Will the company allow you to stay at the Gaylord Texan? Cowboys is there and a good course. Others within 10 minutes (depending on traffic) are:

Grapevine Muni (never played it but hear great things)
Sky Creek Ranch
Bear Creek
Texas Star
TPC Las Colinas/Cottonwood Valley
Tour 18

I know there are more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Every course around here has a grass range, so that's not an issue.

CowtownTexas is correct. I am working right next to the airport. I can stay anywhere I like and am currently in Las Colinas having arrived today, but willing to relocate if I can find somewhere better. Heading out to Indian Creek this afternoon.

I've heard mixed about Cowboys, but looking at google maps it looks like a solid course, pretty cool bunker complexes.

Two of you mentioned Grapevine, but looks like a nine hole course? Not against it if it's good, just curious if I'm looking at the right place. Bear Creek looks good too, it is right next to the office I'll be working in, so glad to hear it is recommended...practice area looks solid too.

I will also be here on the weekend, looking for an experience type place at least once, leaning toward Texas Star at this point.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and help, I'm looking forward to a few weeks of golf, if anyone wants a game, feel free to PM me, I'll be around until the 30th or so.

Grapevine Municipal is great. They have three nines.. So you just play 2. The course is adjacent to Cowboys. Not in the same condition obviously, but it should be in great shape now, and it's 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of Cowboys.

The Texas Star is also a great course. Higher end muni.

Not sure what your budget is, but if it's "value" oriented, i would say:

1. Grapevine Muni is the best value
2. Indian Creek - Creek Course is a close second (avoid the Lakes course, IMHO)

If you're more interested in paying-up for conditions/design, with less emphasis on value then
1. If you're staying south of DFW: Texas Star was always in good shape and is a good layout
2. if you're staying north or west of DFW: Sky Creek Ranch is a great layout (maybe more target-golf oriented than anything else in the area), in great condition with pretty good practice facilties ... if money is no object, then give Cowboys a try, but I personally don't think its worth the VERY high green fee

Hope you enjoy you're stay in the area ... do yourself a favor and head to a Snuffer's for a cheeseburger and cheddar fries and to Cafe Brazil for breakfast (migas or chilaquiles). I miss those two places more than just about anything in Dallas.

Since you mentioned Cowboys, I just played there this past Saturday and the conditions were great. Fast greens and the bunkers were plenty fluffy. Only downside was it was a 5+ hour round due to all the iDealGolfers they sold. If you play it on a weekday, you should be good to go.

Another vote for Sky Creek and Texas Start if you stay in that area. I like COwboys but as others have mentioned the rounds take forever on the weekends. I also like Castle Hills but it is a little bit further down 121.

Sounds like Texas Star is the go for my Saturday round than. Thanks guys. As for the Snuffers cheeseburger, I'll do it...having already filled up on Whattaburger and Chic-Fil-A, in the two days I've been here I am due for a change! Thanks for the advice.

On a general note Dallas has been a pretty nice place so far, very friendly people, still getting used to the "hello" from every second person on the street! I hope this weather keeps up too, love the heat!
