Another iteachgolf Story: "In Dan We Trust..."

Hey everyone! I saw some of Dan's success stories on here, especially Heath's (hstead), and took notice of the SwingFix option. Also, I'm built more like Brian Smock than DL III, so that was intriguing with regards to working with Dan. I sent my first video to Dan on SwingFix on April 10th and my 5th video this week in an attempt to "get better". I was hoping this review would provide some (more) info re: the process and maybe give some inspiration to other WRX'ers who may be lost in golf pergatory. But first a little about myself...

 

I've been playing the game for 20+ years and started out with a John Daly, free flowing swing with big slices (prior to lessons). My swing now is extremely short with very little power right to left. Also...

Big statement, yes, but not far from the truth. My 2012 stats were 70% of fairways in regulation and 38% of greens in regulation. There is nothing more frustrating than hitting fairways all day long but not be able to hit a green from 150 yards. I have the ability to shoot 75 one day and 88 the next. My game within 100 yards is very solid, which helps tremendously. I think you get my point.

 

I've had lessons with a half dozen instructors over the past 10 years and none of it has helped me improve. I will take the blame but I feel it's also about the process. Not only is Dan very accessible, but the video review is extremely useful as a reference point, which I feel is one of the biggest issues with golf lessons that do not include a lot of video. Is there anything worse than leaving a 90 minute lesson and not truly remembering what and WHY you were working on a certain grip/posture/move?

 

My first video back from Dan was no suprise: too shallow and swinging too much "in to out", which is how you hit a draw...right? Wrong! I knew what I was doing but didn't know the best way to fix it. I feel like I have made some huge changes in the past two months (grip, stance, ball position, etc.), but it has been very gradual. The "right arm straight" thought was never a problem for me...it was the right arm fold on takeaway that really screwed up my lack of backswing. As of today, I'm working on getting my right arm at 90*'s at the top of my swing and keeping that angle for as long as possible on the downswing to get steeper and swing left at impact. The swing feels effortless when done correctly and the ball flies!

 

I've spent a ton of time working on Dan's instruction, which is why I haven't written this post. I wanted Dan...and Dan ONLY...to give me feedback. I'm excited about the progress I've made and look forward to hitting a lot of greens in the near future!

Looks effortless. Great work. Another example of how a guy gets a completely different lesson than some of the other guys on this site. There is no one size fits all with Dan. He knows how to make your swing work, not make you work on some one else's swing that the teacher happens to like. Would I love to swing like Charl Swartzel, you bet, but I can't because we are not even close to similar builds etc.

Keep it up and thanks for sharing. If you win on any Tour I will only take a small amount of credit and a modest commission.

Not sure there is a "Tour" for sh*tty golfers like me...but I'll keep you in mind if I make it there!

I feel like it wouldn't hurt me to slow down my backswing a tad as well, but I need to get the takeaway under control before I try to do anything else. Later!~
