2013 U.S. Open **Spoilers** (merged)

Frankensteins Monster

Recommended Posts

Overnight ratings (for what they are worth at this point) showed the coverage leading into primetime was up over 2010 levels, and up from 2012. That may not hold true for the full coverage on Sunday but the 8.9 total viewers looks very promising from the 7-8 hour.

18-49 rating was small compared to the NBA Finals, but that's to be expected. Looks like even without Tiger having a chance ratings were strong, guess that's a credit to Phil...

Edit: Can't spell, went to SEC school, forgive me.

I just love how people are wondering what happened to Horschell and some of the other players. Do they not realize that this is the hardest track in perhaps decades? The only course I can think of with similar difficulty was The Ocean Course at Kiawah......but that was all wind.

Honestly, I am an 8.8 handicap and if I was to play Marion under those conditions I would probably par 3 or 4 holes, have 6 or 7 bogeys, 4 or 5 doubles and remaining holes somewhere around triple or worse. Score would end up close to 100 and that may or may not be from the tips.
[/quote]

Westwood was asked on twitter what he thought a 4 handicap would shoot. He said 95 if they played their best game.

I shoulda put 5 dimes on this guy. Wish my TW "prediction" had not been so on target though.>>

Justin Rose, not putting that great but

In 8 events he has 7 top 25s and 4 top 10s including a second.

He is just killing the ball, this is a guy who is really hitting it well>

17th Driving accuracy

1st Total Driving

7th GIR

1st is sand saves

3rd ball striking

7th scrambling

He hit a 3wood approach like 275 at Memorial I think on one of the best golf swings I have seen.

Could get "lucky" with the greens/conditions. Would like to see him win.

Still rooting for TW, though but I got a bad feeling about this place for him..

Dude, here's what I was talking about. I had typed a response to this, I'm sure I did, something like "This again on US open sunday? :) " Knowing you were kidding! Apparently I left the thread or signed out without posting that reply! That is why i was shocked that you took such offense to my other post to you. Because I figured you saw that response.
So again, I wasn't trying to be a D, I thought it was the continuation of a joke/conversation that i stupidly forgot to somehow participate in in the first place! All My fault! I apologize! I did what a great show! Was Pulling for PM but Justin was a deserving winner. Thanks for understanding man. And seriously no apologies necessary. If i can quote Phil "silver medal" Mickelson "I'm such an idiot!" Glad i found the quote and saw that my response either didn't take because my wireless cut out, (that happens from time to time) or because i simply failed to hit the Post button, and figured this out.

And nice call on Justin, you dug up some good stats pre tourny. The kind that you look back on after he wins and think "oh yeah of course he won"

i can understand all the negative comments from the pros who didn't do as well as they expected at Merion but i wish they can just learn from their experience rather than blabbing out their complaints about the course...

man up guys...you just couldn't handle the course!!

justin did and that's why he won..

......it's all about the ATTITUDE!!

BTW i loved watching this open and all challenges that the course presented to the "best" players in the world!!

I rooted for Phil but entering Sunday my suspicion was Rose or Schwartzel would win. Other than Tiger, Rose was the most impressive player I saw at Honda and Doral this year. I remember posting that. Swing is always on plane. Short game and creativity are underrated. He'll never out putt the field but he makes enough mid range birdie putts to offset the inevitable mistakes.

More than anything, Rose now exudes great confidence out there. He's developed a bit of a strut. Lots of eye contact with spectators. I don't remember any of that from a few years ago. He attracts some light heckling, for some reason, and isn't shy to mix it up with them. Last night in the press interviews he tried to downplay the incidents when he turned and said something to the cameramen or spectators on the tee box or green. But if you follow Rose for 18 holes that type of thing shows up all the time.

It's kind of remarkable how players of that description either win or threaten heavily to win majors. I'm referring to early 30s types who are touted as best players without a major. That's a great subset to check out when making a pick.

I missed some of the open, need a re cap on #13(did bones give him the wrong yardage), 98 yds, wedge, isn't that a Philly mick wheel house item. He bogeys it? Great champ in Justin , I cant help the feeling like Phil pissed this one away more than someone else won it.

Yardage was 121. Pin back right. Raining heavily. Wind left to right and against. Bones called Phil aside and said let's talk about this. He looked up at a very tall camera tower, with a flag whipping wildly. Bones said the ball will never reach that height. Phil was going to flight it. Bones estimated 6 yards of hurt, for an effective distance of 127. Johnny Miller agreed initially but was worried Phil might turn it over and lessen the impact of the wind.

Strike was crisp but obviously low and with a draw. Looked hot from the outset. Ball landed back fringe and took one huge hop into deep hay, 15 yards beyond the pin. Inevitable bogey. Phil said later that he used the wrong club, hitting a pitching wedge when they should have realized it was a gap wedge.

Best summary I've heard was last night on Golf Channel, that Phil's long left wedge on 13 would have been perfect for 15, and his weak left backspinning wedge on 15 would have been ideal for 13.

Bones and Phil, that's a pretty Veteran team to be literally pulling the wrong club? Used the wrong club estimating or they literally picked something they thought was something else? His wedges not marked? Crazy for guys that good.

But really, he killed the US side in the RC so now he's branded. I still like him though, he's a deserving Champion, I just hope he doesn't get all complacent and happy with just one (Bubba I'm looking at you)

Indeed.

Or think "Superbrat" in tennis. I forget if that was McEnroe or Connors - never mind, they both did better by getting themselves all worked up over some perceived slight or misfortune. Some people sometimes need to get the juices flowing a bit faster. Rose doesn't seem the type but you never really know ..... (just a theory)

I said I didn't have a good feeling about this place for TW.

Justin Rose, I saw him hit his first tee shot, think it was Saturday. He had a "game face" on, never seen him look quite so determined.

I remeber one Masters, funny what you remember and I think he was doing well on Saturday and he hit a wedge into the water and he just looked down and knew he was done.

But not this time, this time he closed. He must still be flying high.
