Wearing a button up dress shirt and tie for golf?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying some sample shirts of a new company called Vesti Ascendi. They are making a button up dress shirt and tie for golfing.

So far I like the shirt and tie. A little warmer in the summer than a polo shirt, but comfortable. It has some unique features that make it different from the typical dress shirt and tie I buy at the store. No restriction swinging and the tie does not get in the way because of the button down tie rail.

Lots of double takes on the course, but really enjoying the style. Here are some pics of me with my boys and a couple close up features.

What do you think of it?

Okay, it's a nice thought, but...

To pull this off, the top button has to stay buttoned and the knot properly adjusted. Also, you've tied the tie too short.

With the button open and the tie low, it makes it look like you're uncomfortable with your attire and ready to be out of it. Which then begs the question, why aren't you wearing something that is comfortable for what you're doing (Golf).

Also, you gotta get the right accessories - trade hats with the kid to your left (photo right). A baseball style cap doesn't work at all. A less sporty sunglass would help too.

Finally, go for the plus fours. If you're giving it a go don't go half way.

I think it's a kind of cool idea, but I'd save it for the fall/cooler weather.

It can be worn buttoned all the way up, I just chose not to for that picture because I was trying their more casual look with sleeves rolled up and tie loosened, but normally I do wear the top button and tie fully tied, proper length and full long sleeves.

Yes I could have traded hats with my son, but he really wanted to wear that hat so I let him and wore the baseball one instead. I don't own plus 4s so I just went with some black pants.

Is that comfortable?
[/quote]

I wear a dress shirt and tie for more most days of the week, so I am comfortable in a shirt and tie. But I think this one has some comfort features that make it better than the others in my closet. The lack of tags, the contrast collar lining is really soft and the stretch fabric along with pleated back makes it comfortable even for golfing.

Yes i will not be wearing this when it is 90* or hotter.

Its not traditional attire (see plus fours, tie tucked in etc.) and its not modern attire... which leaves it in that middle ground that = awkward.

I'm not quite sure what the marketing plan looks like for this company, but it seems to me that most corporate professionals would rather get out of their suit/shirt/tie that is their standard business attire and into something more enjoyable for the course. Maybe that's just me...

IF I were to wear this style (which I loved in the old school golf days), it would have to be button up. Sadly, the way I sweat, closing the top button and wearing a tie would only make me warmer and sweat more.

I do also agree with others...it looks like you are trying to hard to be "stylish"...kind of a like those guys who tried to pull of wearing a fedora. Only certain guys can pull it off...most others look like they are trying to hard to be "cool".

Fair enough, I just prefer a more tidy look.

Certainly no need to swipe your kid's hat, they're both looking pretty sharp. You might want to check out Iliac Golf, they have some driver's caps that'd go great with that look.

Have fun out there.

Decent look, but definitely not my style.

The closest I would come to that is the vintage look Webb wore on Sunday at last year's open. The vintage golf shirt with an oxford-type collar on it paired with the cardigan isn't a bad look when the weather is right. Not what I would wear it on a mid summer's day.

Is this the David Brent range of golfing attire?

I really don't see the point of it. If you're going to go shirt and tie, you go oldschool as in plus fours, cardigan or a sleeveless pullover... not toner rep.

Not much love from the flat bill crowd.

I dig it. Probably would be better in the Fall. You should sport the ivy cap your kid has on to complete the look.

The entire outfit would be a cool experience in the fall or spring.. Get a bunch of " chaps " together and have a smashing time of it.

I dig it. Not in July/August... But I dig it.

I'm not a big fan of the look. It doesn't look...right.

I think the dress shirt could look good, with the right outfit. Take away the tie. And place it under a cardigan/sweater. I think during the colder weather, the shirt could be pulled off. Almost like what G-Mac did at Pebble.

Still a tough sell. The only way to really know how it could look good is by sending it out for people to try. (Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge) ;)

I do this look once a year when our club has their "throwback tournament". We play 9 holes with persimmon woods, pre-80s irons, mashies, putters with wooden shafts and balata balls. It's actually pretty fun just hitting some of the old stuff....one thing I've noticed is the shafts were much weaker back then so you have to stay pretty smooth and slow.

My attire for the past 2 years has been a black newsboy cap, black cardigan, white button down shirt, black knit tie with tie bar to hold it down, grey glenplaid pair of knickers, black knee high socks and my black and white shieldtip Footjoy icons.

We've had about 8 groups play the past 2 years and we are expecting 12 this year. Fun stuff!
