Wearing a button up dress shirt and tie for golf?

I'm a guy that thinks part of the downfall of our country is the casual attitude that everyone has in regards to looking proper. I think it's ridiculous that people go to work wearing polos and khakis or worse. "Casual Friday" has become "Casual Everyday" I hate this new fad that everyone that has any type of job in the medical profession wears scrubs to work. Scrubs are made for conducting surgery, not setting appointments for the doctor. Why don't you just wear pajamas to work? I'm a funeral director, and rarely do people wear shirts and ties, much less a suit, to a funeral anymore. If you don't take pride in how you present yourself in your place of employment or solemn events, than how can you take pride in anything else?

Having said all of that, I think this look is a non-starter. The game of golf is not just for the country club crowd anymore. Things like comfort have to be taken into account. At it's best golf is a sport, at it's worst it is a leisure activity. A button down shirt and tie is not necessary.

I guess you wouldn't be happy seeing me in my office. I wear golf shirts and khakis everyday of the week and occasionally scrubs as well. My only time to hit some golf balls is lunch time so excuse my contribution to our nation's demise.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but I assume by your handle that you are a doctor. I believe that you should wear a shirt and tie, unless you are in surgery, where those scrubs are necessary. You're an educated individual in a noble profession. People come to you and spend very good money because you are more knowledgeable than they are. You are in a position of utmost trust. Don't you think that position deserves to stand out a little more than the cashier at a retail outlet?

If anyone ever see's me with a tie on anywhere other than work, weddings, or funerals, please feel obliged to choke me with it.

That apostrophe in "see's" looks pretty choke-worthy.

I don't mind wearing a tie and jacket for anything that calls for a tie and jacket. Golf isn't one of those things.

My god, I had no idea that me wearing jeans and a button up to work was causing the downfall of our country??? I work as a project manager in a non-solemn office, who would have thought my pants could have such a profound effect on society as a whole. Can someone call Obama and Congress because we fixed it!!!

I appreciate the compliment. I guess I don't hold myself in such high esteem. Naturally if I dress professionally, my patients would probably look at me with more respect. But you see, I'm not aiming for their respect. I'm aiming to get them better. Clinical knowledge and judgement don't need suits and ties to correctly diagnose and treat diseases. I'd rather earn their respect that way. If a patient doesn't want to see me again because I wear golf shirt and khakis, I guess I have to respect their decision, although I haven't heard of such. :drinks:

narrow tie (2" max), tie tucked it in the shirt (please reference GQ for proper placement to tuck in), you can leave the top botton of the shirt open, but still tie your tie all the way up. That'd LOOK a lot better.

as far as comfort level.....I just can't imagine it'd be comfortable, you'd have to retuck your shirts after couple of swings.

I knew my opinion wouldn't be a popular one. I just feel that the way in which one presents themselves directly correlates to the respect they have for what they do. Today companies tell people to wear whatever they want, and they do, but the company also says, "forget about a pension. You'll probably jump ship in 3 years anyway". We have nearly lost all customer service in this country. The guy that used to bag your groceries used to wear a shirt, tie, and apron. What does he wear now? That's right. He doesn't exist. I mentioned that people don't wear suits to funerals anymore. A good reason for that is that they no longer own one. I will occasionally see someone come to a funeral with a jacket that hangs down to their knuckles that still has the tag on the bottom of the sleeve. Even when people try to look right they have no idea how to pull it off. It's all a slippery slope.

I am sorry for pulling the thread off topic. While I don't think a shirt and tie is practical for playing golf, I will say that back when men wore the shirt and tie while playing nobody in the gallery ever screamed, "Mashed Potato!". See, slippery slope.

There is some truth to what is said. I've noticed that work environments with casual attire have a tendency (doesn't mean all) to be less professional. Is that bad? Depends...some companies like to foster "creativity" in which case, conformity and structure isn't the priority. In the end, I find that business always comes back around to "people working with people" and few like to be treated in a rude or unprofessional manner.I remember (as a kid) when someone explained why kids were not allowed to wear hats in school. Apparently there were studies that found that kids wearing a hat were more likely to "act out". Reason...a hat like a mask enables to person to put on a different persona. Not sure I 100% buy it, but it made sense to me and is reaffirmed as I've gotten older.I'm a firm believer in first impressions...whether it be your vocabulary, fitnesss or dress. People make an initial impression based on what they perceive usually through some type of personal experience (ie: in my life...this type of person has been reckless, arrogant, violent, kind, etc.). That first impression is either confirmed or contrary to the individual's previous experience...it is changed. Can you guess which is tougher?I will disagree with your comments about a pension and lack of company loyalty. That can be argued round and round about which came first. I would argue that many people have seen mass layoffs and lack of loyalty by companies to meet quarterly earnings and boost an executive bonus. Any wonder why many hard working employees feel zero loyalty...layoffs are always about productivity...sometimes it just comes down to cutting expenses regardless of the value an employee brings. This also applies to the grocery bagger...IMO it has less to do with the employee and more to do with companies deciding to save a $ for better earnings.I will agree that MANY people have no idea how to buy a suit and have it properly fitted for them. I've see people who wear a suit that is so baggy in the pants, it almost looks like a dress. I wonder why they even tried because it just doesn't look good. Not sure I would call it the downfall of our society...but it has been a trend for the past decade or so.

This thread got way off topic. To get it back on topic, I just think you can't half arse the look. Either add the +4's or a more vintage looking slack, get the tie going right and either no hat or a paper boy hat. A guy at my club rocks this look and quite honestly he pulls it off.

LOL worthy. It's not 1930 anymore. Golf is more about the sport nowadays rather than a game "gentleman" play.

Do what you want but I think that just makes things harder on yourself.

I think it would be cool none the less to have an event on the tour where everyone dresses in classic golf fashion. I'de love to see everyone grind it out in a dress shirt, tie, wool vest, with nickers and high socks sweat it out. Literally.

Those guys back in the day were manly men!

Nobody is going to wear a shirt and tie for golf, unless it is for some retro hickory or persimmon event. Maybe excessive, but today, anything goes with regards to attire and behavior.. However, a doctor or any professional should look like a professional. Patients also should dress in better attire than jeans and ball caps. There should be mutual respect shown, and clothing helps establish respect. The informality of everyone on first name basis is another item. Ask someone their last name, and that person is violating a privacy issue. Mr. Jones or Mrs. Smith has gone the way of the buffalo.

I was a self employed CPA. I used to visit my clients at their homes and workplaces. I never, never went without a coat and tie. Early in my career, suits were mandatory. Later, a blazer and khakis were appropriate.

I apologize for my digression. Back in the 1980's, I remember buying a couple golf shirts that doubled as business shirts. They had button down collars, only the front buttoned half way. The tie would hide the fact that the shirt was a pullover.

Stuff like that isn't coming back.

Wearing a wide tie like that on a golf course is jarring to me for some reason. If it were a slim tie it would look much better to my eye at least.

Just kinda looks like you got off work and went to play a round, not something designed for golf.

Well you asked...sooo here goes...

I'll preface this by saying that I wear a suite & tie everyday...

If any of my buddies showed up to the course with a tie...they would NEVER ever hear the end of it...for the entire round. And most all of the guys wear suits & ties at our club for the careers in finance. It just screams like you're trying to hard. I have never ever played with anyone that played in a tie and I think it does more of the opposite effect of trying to get respect and you're more likely to get the stink eye if anything else.

We do have a Throwback Day at our club an it's fun. But to show up on a regular Saturday at 8am and tee it up like that is just weird. You're not on tour.

IF you want to continue you the look...you have to commit to it. First, the tie is all kinds of wrong. Like said before, it needs to be slim and most likely a solid color. Not a thick Alfani tie from TJ Max. Secondly, those blue-chino-pant-things you have on need to go. They say more Division Manager that drives a Dodge Stratus than sleek golf dresser. The pants need to be either gray, tweed, a checked-patterned-grey, or a dark grey. No khaki or black colored pants either - you don't want to look like a waiter. I don't think I should have to say this, but the pants should be of slim fit and neither pleater or cuffed. Nothing wrong with navy pants, but not with a white shirt.

The OP has done an awesome service by posting this. Not only has he allowed us to discuss fashion on the course, he's also allowed numerous people to b*tch incessantly about how people are far too casual these days.

Back in the good old days people used to dress professionally, wear a hat....be respectful...have manners.....as they passed under the "Whites Only" sign....

This is ridiculous.
