Iron Reshafting - Fitter Broke 4 Shafts - Normal?

Recommended Posts

Up until recently I've never had a shaft break on me! Pulling the Original 31year old True-Temper from a Wilson 2 iron proved to be just too difficult. Rust, or something won.

I had the hosel GLOWING red, and the bar on my head extractor was bending. I have put together hundreds of clubs, so this wasn't rookie BS taking place.

Finally I got fed up after over 1hr of cautioned heating to keep the finish intact. I put a pipe over the extractor handle. SNAP, Almost flush with the Hosel...

It was not fun to drill out, but 30 mins slow going got it done and a new shaft installed.

Also, you're entitled to your property. The shafts.

Those things were usually reverse threaded. Next time you run into one try twisting it because using a puller you will never get it out.

Wow, just wow!

Between using a heat gun or a micro torch on iron head/steel shaft combo's you don't even need a vice. I use a Mitchell shaft puller for woods with graphite shafts.

The hardest shaft pulls I have ever faced in irons are the older Ping's Eye2's especially if the shafts are original. Even with those it just takes a little more patience as the bond doesn't seem to loosen as quickly or easily even though some are 30 years old.

I understand the reluctance of heading to a big box store as I have been disappointed more than once. The best thing I ever did was take my step son to a half day work shop on club building.

It was very basic more of the glue and go variety of club building, however, by the end of day I was able to replace the shafts in my wedges. I also gained the confidence to realize I could do more than installing grips. I don't work on any gear except my own.

That was about 10 years ago. Today I spent the morning installing a new set of C-Tapers in my Anser's. 3-PW and 50/54/58 wedges, spine aligned, properly swing weighted, cut to length and re gripped. The worst part of the build is the wait! :) I use the 18 hour epoxy. There is something to be said for knowing that the build was done correctly and to your exact spec's.

Tomorrow afternoon, I will get to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone. I was busy all day today so this is the first chance I've had to answer some questions that popped up:

The shop is in East Rochester

The Pxi's were installed at Callaway. The C-Tapers I put in were the first attempt at re-shafting

I will be going back tomorrow and see what happens.

I don't buy it, crushing a steel shaft in a clamp would be near on impossible.

I have reshafted X Forged 13 irons and had zero issues pulling the shafts.

Something fishy is going on!
You are way wrong. It's way easy to crush a shaft on a bench vise. I know from experience. You are probably thinking of a vise that can be preset to only give so much pressure, but even those can be mistakenly set too high or put on the fatter part of the shaft.
No, HISPL is correct. A shaft puller is not the same as a bench vice and a bench vice would not be used to pull a shaft in any self respecting workshop. Even with a bench vice the only way you are going to crush a steel shaft is if you don't use any sort of pads.

There is no reason the OP shouldn't have gotten his shafts back. Despite the PXi's being a light weight shaft they are still a very strong steel shaft.

A clamp is just another form of vise and if it's adjustable, it can, with or without pads.

My old clubbuilder (before I learned to do my own work) had dozens of old shaft pulls from servicing his customers. He had no issues returning the pulls to a customer that requested them. The thing that a lot of people here don't realize is that most golfers DON'T want the pulls. The fact that WRXers want them for experimenting or flipping is the exception, not the rule.

Do you guys also ask for your used tires so you can sell them on eBay as well?

Just my thoughts...I'd say forget about going back tomorrow... unless you told them beforehand that you want the shafts back. If they meet your requests, someone might have to pay for it as it seems like a small business. The guy who did fantastic work on your clubs might feel some heat. I don't know though...if they seem like arrogant know-it-alls like your typical wrxr' it can go either way. Take it easy.
First off OEM glue can be the worst. I had a set of Wilson Staffs. Same problem. Just would not let go. I got the oxy set out :) and started twisting. I finally got it off twisting to the left (I think). Ruined the shaft. Looked in the hosel and it was threaded. Hogan's are pinned. Wilson must screw them on. Anyway, once I knew to get them apart the rest of the set went fine. Losing four shafts seems fishy.

I twisted the grip loose from the shaft, while the Hosel was glowing, with assistance from a shaft holder. Yeah, it was stuck. I actually think someone JBwelded it at one point.

Shafts of that era were sometimes dimpled, pinned and epoxied. Epoxy was not all that well trusted back then thus the extras. Other than the pin, none of these would hold a shaft enough to break them though a dimpled shaft would need a bit of tapping to install or remove at times.

Shafts are really not a wear out item like tires. Most tire places charge you a disposal fee to get rid of them. If the tires are high dollar, high performance and have life left then yes. Some auto enthusiasts change tires like golfwrx members change driver shafts.

yeah, not the best analogy, if I change tires it's 'cause they need changin'. A set of PXi's are not worn out and have value. Yes club builders often have multiple sets of used shafts, but they are typically old DG's and the like. The builder or someone in the shop knew what they had and scammed this guy (of course this is my opinion), there is no other logical reason. No way 4 shafts broke in the same set, sorry. The OP should've requested the shafts back up front, that is the only thing that rests on him, but he did ask.

The shafts are still his property, not the shop's. just because I go in and have rims put on a car doesn't mean that the stock rims become the shop's property. They're still mine and I would expect to get them back. I shouldn't have to ask for my own property back. If I want to give them to the shop, I'd have told them they could have them. I don't care if its the exception or the rule, from a legal standpoint, I still own them unless I give them away or sell them.

I called the shop and I'm going to pick the other 4 shafts up tomorrow since I'm on kid duty today. I spoke with the fitter and told him I had a hard time believing he broke 4 shafts but did so in as cordial as a manner as I could. He told me it was the tips that were bent and he wouldn't be able to put them back in without cutting them down. Which is not what he told me on Friday (he said he broke them and threw them out).

So who knows. Thank you again everyone for your help and I'll update again tomorrow.
