Center Shafted Putters - Looking for Feedback on a few Models

WVP

Recommended Posts

I've decided that my next purchase will be a center shafted putter. Like many I've messed around with all different types of putters but none have felt like a 100% perfect match for me. On my last few trips to the golf stores I have messed around with a few center shafted putters and it really clicked for me. Just so easy to line up and stroke on line - I am left eye dominant and use a SBST stroke and I've read since that that's a good match.

What I really want is a custom Machine but I don't think that's in the cards right now. So here's the main contenders. Looking for feedback and insight from anyone that's used these, or any other suggestions.

1. Piretti Teramo CS

So obviously I like the looks of all of these, they're all beautiful putters. Unfortunately I have no way to test the Piretti or Bettinardi models which is a big downfall for me.

I don't feel like "a Scotty Cameron type of guy", I'm sure that makes sense to some of you. I was able to test this model out and repeatedly dropped 15 footers from the alignment mirror that they have at Golf Galaxy. So the results were there. Need more testing to confirm how I feel about the way it feels off the ball as well as the bit of toe hang but at least the option to try it out is there.

Also a little nervous about the black finish on the Cameron and Piretti. I have a black Rife that ended up getting worn around all the edges and I'm not even hard on it.

I have the CS GOLO and am a fan. Face provides a solid, firm feel that results in consistent distance control. Keep in mind it has some toe hang and is not completely face balanced.

Appears as though you have a preference for a milled face. If you view this more as a test and are willing to go the insert route, TaylorMade Manta or Corza can be found for pretty cheap.

Agree above with the feel and distance control of the GoLo S. I have one now but I'm selling it to try out a TM Manta. I've only rolled them in store but they line up nicely and have a nice feel as well and are pretty cheap.

Thanks trowski. Pretty opened minded but like many the high end stuff catches my eye. I've owned 3 Odyssey's with inserts and 2 Rife's with milled faces. The 2 getting the most usage now are a Versa 7 and a White Ice #9.

You really can't go wrong with any of those models. I would also check out the Cleveland 5.5 CS. I picked it up at my work w/ my discount for $40 and it's the best best money I've ever spent on golf. It's all balck and I added new black paint fill and it's a stealthy sleeper. I get asked all the time what kind of putter it is. It's milled and on the heavier side at 350gr. I have a betti, Ping, and Scotty and the Cleveland feels just as good as all of them.

The new Ping Piper CS isn't bad either, it's got the TR insert feels great.

I'm not 100% sure CS is correct for me. Before the GoLo I had only played one putter for the last 15 years, a SC gun blue Newport. So I just want to test the waters and see how a HS mallet will do. The actual putter itself is awesome. The finish holds up really well. My Newport had to be babied and was such a pain to take care of.

Here's a pic of the bottom. I bought it used and the finish at the top left was like that when I got it. Not sure how it happened but it certainly hasn't gotten worse. I think the PVD finish holds up the best out of the scotty finishes.

^^The 5.5 is an oustanding choice, regardless of price. Stock grip stinks, but you can find them new for cheap on eBay.

You may also want to look at the BB54 CS shaft. SUPER stable putter. Great alignment.
[/quote]

Thanks for the suggestion. I am SURE that the BB54 is unbelievably stable and puts a great roll on the ball. How could it not? I'd like to go with something with more classic looks though. That's what had me really wanting to make the #9 style work and also part of the reason that I'm not crazy about the Versa 7.

I completely agree with tater tot. I've got a ton of great high end putters and had never tried a CS until I did a Seemore SPI Fitting earlier this year. They fitted me for an mfgp2 and I could not be happier. A month ago I went out and bought a Golo S because I loved the cs so much but it didn't beat out the seemore. I have since bought two more Seemore's just because I'm loving the feel of what I got and I wanted to give others a try. The new Z series are extra sweet. Last year I gamed a Betti SS7 for most of the year and I'm thinking about picking up the bb35 or maybe seeing if the ss12 will fit the bill.

Another vote for the Seemore,I've had mine for about 2 months now and love it! Plus, you won't spend nearly the scratch on one of those (eBay was my route) versus the others you're talking about

i bought a seemore si3 and it lasted all of a week, well mainly due to the guy who bought it after two days took 5 days to pick it up. Just didnt feel right and quite light.

I have been using a nike method mignight 007 I think it is and I must say that putter is quite nice feeling and good being a darker finish. Try that if you want a thicker blade and not the mallet look..

Good luck although my centre shaft experience lasted a year as im looking at a new putter now

Personally the Betti is my favorite, I love the boxy look of it (just a disclaimer, I've only hit the Scotty and I'm like you, I'm just not a Scotty kinda person...).

If you're unsure and want to try a cheaper alternative, people on eBay are closing out the Odyssey CSM belly putters for pretty cheap. I've got one coming and my plan is to chop it off at 35". I've always been a fan of the Odyssey center shafted putters and this one comes in at 400g so it will hopefully have some of that Tank-style weight to it once I put some counter weights in there. Just food for thought.

Look on the SeeMore site too, I had a CS One (I think was the name). Bought it straight from the site at 350g and it was sexy. I totally regret selling it, but you know how that goes.

I'm a big SeeMore fan as well, they're great putters and don't get the press of the bigger boys.

ss12_topline.jpg How bout this years current centershafted model by Bettinardi if you are looking for a classic look? The studio stock 12 is a solid looking putter in my opinion

It is beautiful. Is there a Bettinardi that's not outstanding in the looks department? But for me the SS12 sits a little too low profile. I know that's by design but it doesn't suit my eye. Everything else about is great.

I have the opportunity to visit a Bettinardi Studio B in September. I think I am going to check out the Betti's then, and in the meantime do some more testing with the SeeMore's and Golo S since they're available for me to try. Odyssey's as well - I had forgotten about the ProType #5 CS - milled but much more affordable since the prices have went down. Kinda feel like a milled Odyssey is contradictory a bit though....

Golo S is like putting with a stick of butter. Best feel I've ever had. Ever so slight toe-hang, maybe 8:30.

Rife 2 Bar Hybrid is a very, very, very, very, very close 2nd and saved me a few hundred bucks (used, ebay). Pretty much same toe-hang as Golo S. Right now this is my putter, the distance control is outstanding on long putts, and I've never had that before.

Bought the Cleveland 5.5 on super sale, only rolled it once, but it feels like it's going to be in the same boat as the Rife. Pretty much same toe-hang as Golo S This may end up being my putter.

Rife Trinidad was also excellent. A bit more toe-hang than the first three, maybe 8:00. I didn't have the control on long putts I needed.

Rolled the SeeMore in stores, I prefer the FGP to the X3.

I've been using a center shaft SC for a year or so and love it. They have an alignment aid that I feel really helps. The only other center shaft I've spent time on is a few of the Odysseys (only blades). I would recommend either.

Bettinardi or the Seemore are both great putters. Cameron is ok but no where near the putter Bettinardi is. Cameron makes some very nice putters for the Tour but retail is mediocre. You can work with Bettinardi's custom dept and get a 10x's the putter than you will get out of a Tour Cameron and its built exactly to your exact weight and specs for $1250.00 and a Tour Cameron is $3k and up and it was not built for you. The Seemore is as good as both and probably the best center shaft and its around $450 to
$550.00. To bad there is not a center shaft Sabertooth because that's a great putter but Odyssey only cares about building there best and most wanted for the Tour.
