Center Shafted Putters - Looking for Feedback on a few Models

WVP

Recommended Posts

Had the chance to spend some time at Golf Galaxy, here are some observations:

- My alignment and ability to roll the ball on line was fantastic with every CS model I tried. Really validated my thoughts in going to this type of putter.

- Maybe it's just Scotty Cameron but maybe I'm not a milled putter guy. The craftsmanship is obvious, that's why I was first interested in the models listed in the original post. But I've never rolled a Cameron and enjoyed the feel, ever. Carbon, SS, GSS - they all feel like tapping a golf ball with a block of metal. I don't get "soft" anywhere - maybe some of you guys have a heightened sense of feel and awareness? The only great feeling milled putters I've tried were Machine putters. Perhaps Betti's and Piretti's would be good as well but I can't try either (well I can try Bettinardi's in a few months). Anyway, the Golo S is out for sure.

- Ping TR Piper C was really good. I like the aluminum insert, it's quite firm and the distance control was great. The grip is awesome like many have mentioned. However I wasn't a fan of the dual alignment lines with no center line - to me I really need that center line when using this type of putter.

- No ProType Odyssey 5 CS at the store. The Versa line doesn't have a CS model and the only White Hot Pro is the #2 which isn't what I'm looking for. I tried the Metal X #5 CS and it just looked weird from address. Like the hosel was wider than the top line and the head was really tiny. Just not the best look. I think a center section V-Line or #5 White Hot Pro would be nice if available.

- Golf Galaxy does not carry the SeeMore X line so I wasn't able to try the X3. I did try the Si5 which appears to be similar in many ways. The nickel finish is really nice and the headshape is good as well. The alignment aids plus the red dot idea really gets you square to the target. I really want to try an X3 now, with the insert and milled face - that might be my putter.

- Surprise of the day? Yes! Stacy-12. Well, maybe it shouldn't be a surprise for me as Yes putters have always put an amazing roll on the ball when I tried them in the stores. I know some think the roll tech is BS and attribute the roll to lower loft (they're at 2.5 degrees) but I've experienced the same great roll from every Yes I've ever tried. I seem to benefit from a higher MOI putter but I also wanted something more traditional looking this time which the Stacy 12 is not. The alignment aid is a bit busy but it works well. I'd prefer it without the top and bottom lines. I probably would prefer the i4 Tech finish but the white is very matte, almost gray and looks pretty good. Anyway, I was automatic with this thing....

You should definitely try the Rife 2 Bar Hybrid Mallet and the Cleveland 5.5. Both are amazing. The Rife is a bit hard to locate (been scouring Ebay for a couple weeks) but the Cleveland is all over Rock Bottom Golf (ebay store and webpage) cheap.

Thanks, unfortunately no one carries Rife locally anymore. I'm not willing to spend that much without in hand testing (too much of that already!). I've actually been eyeing up a 5.5 Black Classic on eBay right now for 60 shipped. Very tempting. I really don't think milled is for me though.

I think the SeeMore X3 might be the one, especially since the Yes! isn't passing the eye test right now. We shall see, gotta find one first!

That's ok you don't want the new ones anyway (well maybe you do, that's not the one I have though), just keep an eye on your local big box stores, they will show up. If you're ever in Ohio you can demo mine =P

The Cleveland is $39.99 plus 9.99 shipping at http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/cleveland-golf-classic-collection-black-platinum-putter.html# but if you need other stuff, they have free shipping over $100 bucks.

WVP - the Older style Yes hanna may be more to your liking. The alignment is more understated and you should be able to get it for a steel on ebay. Also if you like the Odyssey, try the metal x no7 CS - my current putter.

Ping G440 Max 10.5 degree (Ping Alta CB stiff)
Titleist 913 FD 15 degree (Diamana S+ stiff)
Mizuno JPX EZ 19 & 22 degree Hybrid (Stock stiff)

Titleist Spin Milled - 50, 55, 60 (DG S400)

Like you, I'm not a huge fan of the Scotty feel. It felt too harsh for me. I've said it four times in the last day here...try a Method Midnight 007. Soft feel and amazing roll due to the insert. If I could get used to a center shaft, I'd probably still be gaming it.

I ended up selling the Method to fund my Piretti CWII. It's a really good putter that feels more "glass" like (though that's probably just the sound) but softer *TO ME* than the Scotty 2.6 Studio and Select models. I haven't had any issues with the finish so far.

Next time you're in GG, give the 007 a roll.

No CS #7's in the US unfortunately. That Yes Stacy has been on ebay new for 70 bucks shipped, really testing my willpower. But I know I'd eventually want something that I like the looks of more.

Almost bought one last week! Saw a great deal on ebay and stopped by GG to check it out before bidding. I almost went for it but it didn't feel that stable to me and I wasn't in love with the finish. Nice feel though.

SeeMore ONE CS should be on your to try list.

I still think I like the X3 the best (from what I can tell) but there's nowhere to try it. Strangely enough I've been putting better than ever with an Odyssey #9 White Ice - I can really square the face and get the ball on line, plus the insert gives me the best distance control I've ever experienced. The plan is to check out the Bettinardi's at Studio B next month and also see if my success with the #9 continues. I'd much rather be the guy with an old putter with a worn out sweet spot than someone with a shiny new putter every 6 months....

Agree on the finish and the stability on the 007. I was really hoping the "Method Midnight" would be a darker finish. I added a ton of lead tape to it. The upside of that was it looked like new when I sold it.

So...did you decide on one yet?
Right now my resurrected White Ice #9 has really been working for me. I've always loved the look of #9/TPA/Del Mar putters but I doubt the style would be recommended for me after an advanced fitting - but I'm not going to argue with the results.

I'm going to check out a Studio B next month but the #9 is staying in the bag until a change is needed...or until the urge to try something new wins out.
