Such high scores...Such a bummer...

Recommended Posts

You know i really thought i was turning a corner on the course this week. I scored a 117 today after posting a 103 last Sunday. I nearly broke 100! now...I'm back to some really terrible ball striking. I'm not sure what I'm doing but I know the strike feels very off-center. It even has that high pitched (ting) noise - perhaps I'm hitting it on the toe.

I do have a question though. I read a lot about how you shouldn't grip the club too tightly, and have loose arms - but a woman's strength isn't that of a mans. Should we have a firm grip and firm arms to hit the ball with any punch? or is my 6 iron supposed to do it for me?

I have a high trajectory, it sometimes flies right, and 90% of the time it just doesn't feel *anywhere* near pure.

I suppose there's always tomorrow....

Let me tell a little story here. As an experimented two groups of complete beginner female golfers were selected. The first one received for week traditionnal golf instruction and the second one a program mostly based on strenthening the hands and arms (and I guess overal fitness, I don't know the details). After a week the second goup play better golf that the first. The conclusion from the golf pro that told me this story: one need enough physical strength in the hands to hold tight on the golf club without gettting tense in the forearms and arms (to keep speed up).

Based on that, yes you should hold tight on the club but it is best to build enough strength in the hands to hold tight without tension in the arms.

Just needs enough to support club at top. Speed comes from technique though. I hit it far ands most who watch me are confused since i do nots look like i am evens tryings. I am not trying to hit the ball. I take it back smooth ands i makes sure the downswings starts just as smooths. The speeds shoulds all be through ball. Anywhere else throws the swings off.

Coulds squeeze stress ball a lots to help with wrist ands grip strength.

I do exercises at the gym with weights specifically to ensure strength in hand/wrist/forearm (also helps avoid tendonitis). But the only time I hold the club "firmly" is when I have to hit out of thick, gnarly rough. Watch the LPGA players, you won't see tension in their forearms. Tension kills speed.
Stock answer when you know you aren't swinging "right"...go take a lesson with a Pro. I do "tune up" lessons throughout the season when I need help figuring something out.

It's not how...it's how many

Hey Goobers,

Two things. Can you post a video of your swing. I am curious to see it. I am always amazed how great technique always looks like a 75% swing to me yet swing speed is alot faster than I imagined it to be.

Also, I know you you said you were autistic in the past...but why do you add the "s" after many of the words you type?. Just curious about that.

Congratulations on your recent success in regard to your scores! I've been down the road of golf improvement myself, and what I've found is that golf improvement moves like the stock market. There are going to be peaks and valleys, but over the long haul, if you keep working, you'll get much better!

Being physically strong is good for any golfer, but gripping the club very tightly inhibits the ability for your wrists to hinge and reduces clubhead speed at impact.

In golf, the club shaft and lead arm form a lever. Speed is generated because you swing your arms by turning your hips and shoulders. The tighter your muscles are, the slower you'll swing.

Of course, there is always an exception to every rule, but for the most part, good players grip the club relatively lightly.

I'm glad that your scores are improving.

In order to perform well at anything, skill is essential. You can't really become more skillful by reading alone. You have to practice in order to improve your skills. During a lesson, you and your teacher are discovering what you should be practicing in order to improve your skills
