What do you honestly think you would have shot at Muirfield

Hmmmm.......I rarely shoot in the 90's, occasionally in the 70's, handicap is between 6 and 9 depending...That being said I don't hit it long, keep it in play often and have a nice short game.. With the fairways that fast and if my short game was hot I like my chances shooting in the 90's. If I was putting out of my mind maybe high to mid 80's, of course having a knowledgeable local caddy would be very helpful. If my game was off the 100's would come into play pretty quickly.

I have played Arcadia Bluffs in those conditions and shot 86. Im now 5 shoots better and I think I could shoot in the 70s in those conditions. I love links golf and I grew up only playing links golf in metro detroit. Though if I played in the open I dont think I could break 85 or maybe even 90. I hate the pressure.

I dont know if its accurate but i watched the build up speaking about links golf and the US players and the general consensus was there's no such thing as a true links course in the US for them to practice this type of golf, true or not? I've only seen the courses on the TV coverage so just wondered.

Go to Oregon, Michigan, or Eastern Wisconsin. There is alot of links courses there and there great. Arcadia Bluffs near Traverse City, MI is the 48th toughest course in the country.

I would lose a ball off of every tee, and possibly on 75% of approach shots.

my calcalculator doesn't go up that high.

Is there a handicap restriction there? does anyone know?

It's been a long time since I was there but they use to say men needed to be 16 handicap and
you needed a letter of introduction from a pro.

I think most posters are pessimistic about their chances. Would it really be that hard to break 100? On holes where the rough is bad, you could just use a long iron off the tee and play for bogey. Greens are tough, so give yourself 40 putts. Bunkers are tough, so practice a bunch before you go.

I think most decent golfers could break 100 IF they play strategically.

A question for Derek. If I owned Muirfield, the second they cleared the last green, I would have turned on the sprinklers and raised the height of the mowers. Do they keep the course in Open shape in general, or do they soften it up to keep the grass? Or was it not as burned out as it looked on TV?
I dont know about muirfield in particular but the run on the fairways is pretty typical just now for championship courses around where i am, I'm pretty sure at Muirfield they'd be watering the greens but i doubt they'd ever soften up much altho i do think muirfields greens look pretty fast, faster then local to me but hard greens are the norm. The weather has been a bit out of the norm. tho as more than 2 days over 20degC in a row is like winning the lottery. Back to normal today though, mad rain. I think someone posted who is local to Muirfield maybe they can tell you 100% but im about 100 miles away.

With a couple of practice rounds and an awesome caddy I'd say high 70's. laugh away...

As many Wrx'ers that claim to hit it 350 and never miss a fairway, there is almost an equal number that completely dismiss the fact there are some people not on tour that can really, REALLY play this game. Carry on.

So really on sunday you would only have needed like 2 a side from Tiger?

I am assuming that the OP is meaning under Open conditions, in which case I would be shocked if anyone breaks 80, even with the knowledge that some of this membership can really play.

76 was average for the best in the world.

Myself after the round for spending the money even attempting to try it. Seriously though, given the chance and playing with persimmons and classic irons and a bullseye putter, if I ever get to a proper links course I want to play it that way, somewhere in the neighborhood of 110 to 120. Playing to mid single digits at the moment.
I think given the conditions that would be an honest assessment.

A few might even give him a shot! I don't think people understand how the bunkers are. You can't just practice some of those lies the pros get there. Can't even recreate them for a lot of shots.

My dear chap, you do understand that at any time, any place on that golf course, (save for a tap in putt) that you can play yourself into a worse position than you were when you took the shot?

You do realize that when you get into one of those revetted bunkers you may have to hit a spectacular shot just to get out sideways or backwards? BTW, old fellow, just because you got out does not mean that the hole is going to let up on you, now you face saving bogey and you probably make double, like the best players in the world did.

Surely you saw the run out, did you not? The fire in that golf course was practically unprecedented.

Where in the world have you seen such things challenge these amateur golfers you say can "really, REALLY play this game"? . . . . . and would shoot high 70's?

Preposterous post, indeed.

If you put me 150 out on every hole I'm not breaking 100, let alone from the tee box.

I sincerely doubt that most of these predictions in the 70s, and 80s are realistically within 10 shots of what you'd shoot, and I know that some of you guys have hung up some ridiculous numbers on other courses.

With the galleries and TV cameras and all the other nonsense?

It's not a casual round with your buddies, it's Open conditions with all the histrionics that go with it.

I don't doubt that there are some players on here who could break 80 but there are a lot of shall we say, bold predictions.

Anyone here actually played with PGA Tour players? It's not like they absolutely throttle it every time the tee is in the ground. Last year one somewhat famous around here shot a round a couple over par on a familiar course. Sure there's also the ability to shoot 65 too. The same happened that week in The Open were the same player shoots 69-71 and also an 80-81. Why? Like someone else said you cannot recreate lies and situations that you never see except at those style courses. Often times just striking the ball well means nothing.
