Swing your Swing - whats unique that actually works

Its easy for arnie or other pros to recommend playing with your own swing when they are shooting under par, but as amateurs who are just looking to prevent the big miss we are constantly looking for ways to fix our swings or make changes.

 

its hard to seperate out what is unique to our own swing and what actually needs changed or fixed to become a better player..

 

i'm curious, what are some of the things that others think are unique to your swing but don't actually prevent you from being a good ball striker. maybe something that looks a little funky or unconventional but something that a good instructor wouldn't necessarily try to change.

 

my own example: i used to get a little quick when starting the swing. kind of a jerk which often got me out of synch and the club went under plane. i now start the swing in the first 6-10 inches of takeaway in slow motion. i then can swing normal. i think this has helped and isn't something that would be something to change, as compared to someone who's entire backswing to the top is super slow motion.

I learned on a strong grip, but there is an abundance of neutral grip instruction on the Internet. So, I figured that I was doing something wrong and for a few months tried and tried to get the hang of using a neutral grip and getting my left wrist squared to target at impact. But I just wasn't liking it and on a whim went back to strong grip. Presto. I'll never go back to neutral. Not that it's bad. Just doesn't work for me. So, when I swing my own swing, it starts with the strong grip.

It's a good question OP. I play with several +hdcp players who have funky alignments and swing planes, but they learned to make it work. I feel like I will always be tinkering with my swing and will never reach my potential because of it.

I play my swing that I have had since day one. I video taped it and though, "damn, my takeaway looks weird!" But then I looked at where I was at the top and I think I'm pretty good at the top and I come through the ball nicely. I'm not going to try to take away the club any different because my swing to me feels great and I hit the ball great and consistent.

I tell everyone to just swing their swings. Don't keep changing stuff, it's only going to get you more twisted up and inconsistent. Just work on your swing and focus on hitting the ball where you want it to go.

I'm all for improving ones swing, but can you imagine what folks would have said about arnie's swing here on wrx? I'm sure arnie worked on his swing, but not to make it look pretty. That's the point.

I've wondered the same thing regarding Tom Watson, Mickelson, Kuchar, or any golfer who doesn't swing according to the prescribed swing/method du jour on wrx.

[color="#800080"]​You only haves to change things that make inconsistencies. Sometimes it is more thans other. A quirky swing with small tweaks coulds play high levels. A perfect lookings swing coulds play like crap. I was told to hinge wrists more. I played terrible. I haves been told i am like Steve Stricker. I woulds be told i haves late hinge on here. That is how i do it ands i do nots care. I worked hard on hittings balls solid. [/color]

[color="#800080"]​Defines it betters. If poor contacts , changes needed. However , finds right instructor who will nots over teach or over analyze with video. Lines ands angles happen with decent fundamentals. Trying too hards to make a swing look video pretty does nots always help. If high level contact , swing your swings ands learn how to play at high levels. [/color]
