Absolutely stoked that Scotty won this. As someone else here pointed out, shooting 66 was a pretty good effort & it's not his fault others didn't shoot better. Also, Anchor44 - get over yourself. The putter is legal. Deal with it.

Was very disappointed in the coverage though. Had to record the last round as I was working. Went home to watch AS win and...saw a wedge shot, a 9 iron and 3 putts in the total coverage. Terrible, terrible, terrible coverage (I think it was CBS). Now given they couldn't know Scott was definitely going to win, but here you have the current Masters champ with the best looking swing in the game, charging on to the lead, & the best you can do is 5 shots coverage????? I had to watch every shot of Chapel's train wreck, lots of Bubba shots, lots of McIlroy shots (who was never even in contention).

Thanks for nothing CBS. I cant believe that we actually pay for this crap coverage.

The man from down under, backed into a victory. Very happy for him.
How on earth do you figure shooting a final round 66 "backing into a victory"?

Backing into a victory is when you were trying to lose it but everyone else faded out worse. I am pretty sure going 5 under on the final day of a tournament is considered charging. Sure the leaders faded but that doesn't make it a situation of backing into it.

Yeah, no kidding. He was the only guy who decided to play great golf on Sunday. He WON it.

As others have said he made it to #3 in the world with a conventional putter. And come 2016 he's indicated he's going to keep the broom stick but just move it half an inch off the chest.
I'm confident that's what he'll do. He mentioned it yesterday in the booth, that he might modify what he is doing now. It's not a big deal. Mark Wiebe won the Senior British Open a month ago with a non-anchored long putter.

With the conventional length putter, if you miss a short one or consistently fail with midrange putts, you can feel the slight twitch in your hands approaching impact, the two hands working against each other. It's discouraging and can bleed into the rest of your game. When the hands are separated with the long putter, even when you miss it doesn't feel devastating. The entire process seems clunky and mechanical with that thing. You accept it and move on to the next hole.

I really think the USGA and others obsessed with anchoring largely missed the point and are going to be shocked when so many players continue to use the long putter.

Anyway, once Phil bogeyed 18 and was out of it, I switched allegiance to Adam Scott, certain that a victory would prompt bitterness toward Stevie and the long putter. The forum certainly didn't disappoint.

This has probably been brought up elsewhere, but if Scott ends up winning the FedExCup, after winning a major... player of the year?
I'd vote for him over Tiger if he did that.

I like Adam Scott. I said last year on this forum that if i was envious of any athlete it was him. I was accused (deservedly so) of having a man crush on the guy. So i'm pretty happy to see him having a good year. Despite the fact he won't return my calls! Also, my favorite eminem song is "stan"

I love Adam's putter and I love watching him putt. The he's got a great stroke with that thing, its cool looking and he gets great results. And come 2016, he'll adapt just fine- he's a top talent. And by then he'll have more wins, more money and still be better looking than any and every internet expert combined.

I'm just hoping Adam gets as many wins as he can before 2016 bc I don't know how his putting will fare after the long putter is gone

Anyone know if a slightly shorter putter not touching his chest will be legal and as effective? Is the whole rule about anchoring and touching the chest?

Anchoring will be banned, but not the club itself. So A Scott could still use that putter if he doesn't anchor it.

As far as whether an unanchored broomstick is still effective...I have no clue. Awsi has tried it out with some success.

seems to me like he will have to work on keeping the top hand stationary as it "floats" in front of him as opposed to being pressed into his chest. I've picked up a broomstick in stores and messed with it and I can see that being a fairly simple transition. I mean let's face it, in the last 2 Open championships he's missed more than his share of 3-6 footers even with anchoring the thing. I am not sure if it's the pressure gets to him at some times more than others or he reads green with the same tenacity and expertise that I do or what it is. I just know that when you win with it you;re said to look a little awkward, when you give tournaments away with it you look a little absurd.

Regardless of all that, it was a huge win for him and I am sure gives him a ton of confidence these last few weeks.

Imagine how dominant Adam would be if he were a great putter.

I'd like to see Adam go back to conventional right away. He really looks unsure with the long putter, and he misses so many good looks.
Like...the putt at Augusta during the playoff hole to win The Masters? Right.
Well, that certainly was a great moment for Adam. He putted nicely that week.

Let's take a closer look at things, though. Adam currently ranks around 85th on TOUR in Strokes Gained Putting, which kind of puts him right in the middle. He's not horrible, but he's not great.

By comparison, both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson rank inside the top 5 in this category. Much of Phil's beautiful resurgence can be attributed to a massive improvement with his putter.

Because Adam struggles somewhat with his putting, he ranks "only" 24th on TOUR in Birdies Per Round. Tiger ranks 4th and Phil comfortably leads the TOUR in this category. Obviously, the more birdies one makes the better chance he has to plant himself at the top of leaderboards. More especially if one keeps the mistakes at a minimum, which Adam usually does.

Even though Adam hasn't quite measured up to Tiger and Phil with his putting, he still ranks #2 on TOUR in Scoring Average, which clearly indicates that his overall game may very well be the best in golf right now. He obviously avoids the big numbers more adroitly than Phil does.

So it all adds up to my original thought: can you imagine how dominant Adam would be if his putting were more in line with, say, Tiger and Phil? He would certainly have more than two victories this year, and he would probably be the two times defending British Open champion.

While the field is a bit smaller than the summer regular season field-field events (125 vs about 150), I think one could make a pretty solid argument that this is the second best non-major event in golf. Particularly this year, when so many of the top players are PGA Tour members. There's no doubt its way better than the 70-odd man WGCs.

Another quality win for a guy who increasingly looks like he'll be in the Hall of Fame some day.

I wouldn't say success. Merely an opinion that it's not vastly different. I remember posting that here a couple of years ago. I was pushing everything with the anchored long putter so I moved the butt about a half inch from my chest. Immediately it felt more natural and athletic. I did better with midrange putts. On shorter putts there's more of a concern about keeping the top hand steady so you have to concentrate on being smooth. I went back to the short putter within 6 months but I still have the long putter and practice at home with it occasionally, always unanchored.

Tom Kite is using the unanchored method on the senior tour. Wiebe's long putter is slightly shorter than normal but he's also unanchored. With Kite I could detect it immediately. But it was three rounds into the Senior British Open before I realized Wiebe wasn't anchoring. He's got a belly and the grip is very near to the chest. There are going to be considerable fan claims and disputes if somebody is holding it that close on the regular tour.

Well, golfers have strengths and weaknesses. If you were building a Mr. Potatoe Head golfer, then you could piece all their best traits together.

I'll spin it this way: Can you imagine if Tiger was top 10 in FIR?

Adam is a great ball striker and puts the ball right down the middle of the fairway. That's how he scores and doesn't get in trouble.

Strokes gained on putting is a great stat, but being "average" in the middle of the pack vs. being in the top 20 or 15 may not even make a difference in scoring in a round and its not even a full stroke. The difference between Adam Scott and the #1 Putts Gained leader is like .5 strokes a round.

It says that he is JUST above average than the field is in making putts and he doesn't bogey very often. He was bogey free on Sunday (and may have been the only bogey free round if I'm mistaken).

I think it does, and I'd love to see the PGA TOUR keep tabs on some kind of birdie to bogey ratio, or something along those lines. I'm sure Adam would be near the top in that category.

Because I'm a Phil phan I have a better idea of Phil's game, and we all know he makes a lot of bogeys and doubles, especially compared to a guy like Adam. I can only dream of how dominant Phil might be if he eliminated half the mistakes.
