Shaft Experts- Opinions on Precision Flighted Rifles.. What "current" shafts are most like them?

I have played the Precision Flighted Rifles in 6.0 since I got a set of Titleist 962s way back when. I now have them in a set of TM RAC TP MB irons..

 

I have tried KBS tours (have them in my AF Tours, and in a now sold set of Cally X Protos).. I cannot stand the Project X in any variant..

 

I grabbed a set of the Precision Flighted Rifles 3-PW as part of a golf shop liquidation sale that I have been holding for the right set of heads.. I am honing in on the new AP2s as the head, although very interested to see what Callaway does with the Apex Pro.

 

At any rate, I know that there has been a lot of change related to this shaft. Company was bought, designers left, etc.. The product has never really been the same.

 

In your opinion and analysis, what "current" shafts are the most similar to the Precision Rifle Flighted shafts- or am I just as well off to simply reshaft my new irons with the ones I bought? Would I miss or gain anything performance wise?

While some claim the shafts changed when True Temper took over Royal Precision, I seriously doubt the change was a negative one. True Temper supposedly modified the tooling, or maybe made new tooling, because the old RP tooling yielded inconsistent shafts. Can't say either way, but I don't believe the newer TT version Rifles are a bad shaft. If I were you I'd just use the set you have. Rifle's are medium flight shafts with excellent feel in my opinion. If they fit your swing and the heads you play, you are giving up nothing to newer shafts. If you feel like trying something new and want a lower flight in the short irons, I'd try Dynamic Gold Pro's. I have a set and really like them. Long irons get up in the air nicely, and short irons flight low, like the Dynamic Gold name suggests.

Wonder if your Precision Flighted Rifles were the predecessor to the Tour Flighted Rifles. I have a set in my Mizuno Pro II's I bought in the late 90's.

They are the originals.. And I agree!

It will be interesting to see the paring of these shafts with the ap2 heads which had modified CoGs to produce different flights..

In my not very worthy opinion, there hasn't been a steel shaft made that feels as good as the original precision rifles. If they match the trajectory you're looking for I wouldn't give a second thought about them underperforming or hesitate using them.

A good clubmaker with the experience, can build a "flighted" set with the .370 parallel tip version of the KBS Tours. These are the closest current shaft to the original Rifles and are designed as long "blanks" that can be custom trimmed in many different ways. Every shaft for every club is trimmed down from a 43.5" "blank". Very different from constant weight 'discrete length' shaft designs, like the .355 taper KBS, Dynamic Gold, and PX.

Also, the tip section on the .370 version of the KBS Tours do not have as stiff a tip section as their .355 taper model. This also makes them closer in overall bend profile and feel to the Rifles

Absolute nonsense.
The closest shaft to the old Flighted Rifle shaft is .... Drum roll... The Rifle Flighted shaft. Regardless of who makes it, it's still the same profile and weight AND uses their proprietary FCM flex rating. Anything else isn't even in the same ball park. See your PFC dealer about Rifle shafts.
