Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

The one range by me has a rain tent that hangs over the hitting area. Well, the one day I was hitting some wedge shots and my one shot managed to hit the horizontal metal pole that stretches across the entire tent/awning. The ball came right back to me and nailed me in the head. I think the range didn't think about the positioning of the tent/awning too much because it extends out a decent length in front of you and is easy to hit with a wedge. I was even thinking to myself that there was a good chance I'd hit it while I was hitting my wedge shots.

I've also seen a person nail a metal pole to their right that supports the awning and the ball came flying around the hitting area

"Thud!"

At the mat behind me a guy was introducing his girlfriend to the game. He was walking around her giving advice and at one point he was standing at the front edge of her mat while I swung a driver. It felt risky and I was about to ask him to move to the safe side when he took a few steps to his girlfriends left and out of my way, so I said nothing.
I turned around, teed up another ball, and heard the "thud" sound. She had somehow hit him in the head with a practice swing. He got down on his knees holding his left ear and I think there was blood.
Natural selection right there.

(A few minutes later he was on his feet, hitting balls.)

Hey chopper, what are you hitting there?

Dynacraft (?) 24° 4-iron

After how long does being "out of form" turn into "a bad golfer"?

I think the funniest quotes I've heard at the range probably came each time I took my 8 year old and 6 year old to the range. They are the funniest humans I have ever heard. After about 12 balls though, they start having more fun finding broken tees. They like to collect them and get exited when they find a new color... They also love it when I aim at the cart picking up the balls.

I remember one day on the course, a buddy and I caught up to two old guys who were ready to tee off the next hole with driver. The first guy tees off and slices it a little right, but into the river. He mumbles, "Awwww, I hit that one sh!tty!" He then tees up another, which takes him awhile, and then slices the next one even further right, again into the river. They were both a couple of older guys, who looked like the nicest couple of gentlemen you could ever meet. We all felt a little uncomfortable because this guy was obviously having a bad day, and this might take awhile. After he hits his second shot into the river, his partner laughs out loud, "Nahhh. That first one wasn't that bad. THAT one was much more sh!tty!" I thought it was great.

Proceeds to chunk and shank several balls.

"Yeah, for some reason on the range, I can't hit them. I play better when i'm on the course..."
To be fair, I've never shot 76 but I had a spell like that once. Couldn't hit a straight one to save my life on the range but played pretty decently on the course. Some mental issue no doubt.

Don't get me wrong, I've never shot a 76 either but i have shot 80 and plan to shoot 76 soon...hopefully. And i'm no pro, but i do know to shoot a LEGITIMATE 76 on a 70+ par course, you have to be able to make contact with at least 4 out of 5 shots you attempt on the range, and decent contact on at least 9 out of 10 shots on the course, but i'd actually say at least 70 out of 76 shots you need good contact.

In any case, these were high school kids so it's a bit more understandable and forgiveable, but we all know grown men who loudly boast these claims... 5 years ago i deluded myself into thinking i was an 80's shooter because i'd been practicing weekly for 3-4 years and could hit the ball well...therefore, i thought, "I certainly i must shoot in the 80's!!!" I told myself that and others as well, but in hindsight and in reality, I was shooting 90's and 100's... It's tough, especially mentally/psychologically when you dedicate years and years to perfecting your swing/game and hit 100's of balls a week for years, and still can't break 90 legitimitately... So I understand where they're coming from, and it's still funny...a bit sad, but still a bit funny...

Another good one i've heard is "this is how much I care about being good at golf...I don't care at all...", it's a bit difficult to put into context but i hit at a range where drinking is allowed and this guy had full on golf gear, titleist hat, polo shirt, etc... so it seemed apparent to me he did identify himself as a golfer and when he made this statement, it was after having several beers and he was watching a guy who could hit balls with any iron and could fade/draw/hook/slice at his targets... ego, pride, and golf don't mix well... and make for some great entertainment!!! But also makes for great life lessons...

i step up. next to me 3 serious hacks with their drivers. topping, shanking, whatever.

1st guy: wooosh "wow, thats amazing long. i bet, nobody in this club can driver longer"
2nd guy: "yes, you do really great. never saw such a long driver".

for me, it looks like maybe 100mph swing, heel hit and max 230yds total.

i was already warm, so i took out my hybrid and boomed a few. all i hear is lowvoice between these guys "do you see that guy? he hits a hybrid further as we do our drivers. how is that possible".

maybe i should introduce them to wrx. they might be able to bomb 300+, 2 weeks after joining
I have shot a 76, a 77, and two 78's this year, and I find the range somewhat difficult to hit from. The practice range is always in transition stages from the normal abuse it takes, thus it has a real sandy, tight base to it. I noticed many amateurs have a real difficult time hitting off such a foundation, and it's different then course conditions. I usually tee the ball up slightly for my irons and fairway woods to make it a little easier to hit. The last thing I want is to take a bad mental thought into my game due to poor performance on the range.
Ps....these were my first games in the 70' since about 20 years ago!
Thanks

The other day, two guys, both terrible, one giving the other advise...

"The reason you are slicing it is because of your swing path. You have to come more over the top and in and swing to the left to get it to go that way. You are swinging too far to the right which makes it go that way."

All I could think was, good luck to ya fellas. Let me know how all that works out for you.

I saw this one yesterday...Old dude comes out on the range to pick up balls and of course of the probably 12 people there probably 10 think it is funny to try to hit the guy in the caged tractor. Then the picker becomes jammed so the old dude decides to get out and fix it. At first I think that is a horrible idea but then I think well there are only 12 people here everyone can see him it will be fine. I look down the range to see to 4 guys probably 24-28 years old get smiles on their faces and start throwing down balls and hitting at the guy who was only about 125 yards away. These guys were all together and were probably around 10-15 handicappers so lets just say they were throwing pitching wedges right at this old man.

I have seen some stupid things and it is fun to try to hit the tractor picking up balls but these clowns lost their minds when they saw the guy get and never realized they could actually hurt the old guy with a ball to the skull. I flashed a quick glare at them and they got the point at least they stopped after 3 attempts each at hitting the guy.

Two gentlemen roll in right after work. They had a tough day and were ready to blow off some steam on the range. After working their wedges right and left and everywhere in between:

Guy 1: I'm gonna aim for that 200 yard marker, the one on the left.

Guy 2: What are you using? I'm still tweaking distances on these. (New Ping irons, from what I could tell).

Guy 1: 9 iron.

Guy 2: I don't think I can hit a 9 iron 200. I'm gonna go with an 8.

Had a similar thing happen to me. I had got out of the range picker to empty the buckets. Saw a few balls land nearby, but no big deal. Then I here "Got him" and "Fore!" Turned around to see (and hear) a ball coming straight at me. I somehow managed to get the ball picket basket up just in time and deflected it before it got me. It would've hit me right in the face.

I jumped back in the picker and drove straight onto the range tee almost running over the dudes bag. I got right in his face and let loose a slew of words I'd never say in front of my mom, wife, or son. There might even been a threat or two of bodily harm if he ever attempted such again.

Probably the worst thing I heard was someone giving advice on what clubs to buy. Categorizing "cheap" drivers as being the ones with out the loft adjustability. Considering club choice is very subjective, saying Cobra or Callaways are garbage just because you don't like them doesn't mean someone else won't.

Best comment I've read on this site. Please tell me it's with a driver too.

On the "shooting 76 but shanking on the range" comment, my personal best is a true 78 and I typically shoot ~82 and there are (rare) days on the range where I will hit hosel rockets with a wedge, or the even rarer day where I'll shoot a 90-95. Some days you either get in a bad rhythm or just can't swing a club. It happens.

At a local off course range the other day, mid afternoon and the place is pretty slow.

There is a guy in the area I usually like to hit from just going nuts on the driver. Just about every miss you can imagine; pop ups, high hooks, worm burners. He's going so fast he's got the next ball teed up before the last one comes to rest. He's a lefty and I set up 3 stalls down from him with my back to him. There is no one in between. I'm getting loose, hitting soft wedges when all of a sudden a ball comes from behind through my legs and thuds off the wooden divider. Ball ends up resting against my bag. To say the least I was a little surprised. Guy didn't even seem to notice that somehow hit the ball completely sideways behind him. Was already hitting the next one.
