Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

2 pretty good ones..
1. I was at the range next to a guy who was talking to himself non-stop. He repeatedly refered to himself as "The Sandman" in the 3rd person. Every time before he a shot he would say "Now go to sleep", I assume he was telling the ball this, but I truly have no idea why.

2. I'm a big Alabama fan, and one of the course pros played at auburn. We are pretty good friends, but he was sitting behind me one day while I was hitting, and he was having a beer. For whatever reason I had a bad case of the shanks that day, and every sh**ty shot I hit, he would say completely dead pan "Roll Tide".

Better than hearing "War Damn Eagle" the whole time I guess.

I am stealing this and I'm not even the least bit ashamed. I shall forevermore whisper to my ball "go to sleep" and introduce myself as The Sandman on the first tee. I might also carry some actual sand in my pocket and throw it in the air Labron style after every decent shot.

I cannot possible ever repay you for sharing this awesomeness and helping to create my new golfing alter ego.

Well I'm not sure if I should post this. But on the first tee of a big pro event. We shake hands, it's the second day. The dude tells us playing alongside him while STARRING into the eyes of the starter and a female marshall . "yea so this women (he used other language), at 430 in the morning telling me to come over. First off I'm three hours away second off I've got better buddies (again use your mind for language)". After teeing off me and my caddy are loosing it laughing, the seriousness of the event and just to go and say something like that while staring directly into the high ups for the event.

Same guy on the 36th hole of the event which is a par 5. He is 240 out in the rough on a downhill slope near the cut. Will probably need a eagle to make it. Hits his shot and it's dead on line... Ends up in the green side bunker which is a good shot. His response "I just went from trying to make a two to now struggling to make par". Again me and my caddy loose it laughing as we are walking together.

I get it. That entire dialogue the OP typed out was what he heard verbatim from someone on the range.

What was that advice? Study hard and go to college so you don't end up being a weirdo lurking at the driving range and drinking beer?

Ok... I've been reading these posts for the past hour and am dying! I've had a couple good ones!

First one was when I started playing a few years ago. Really started to understand how things were working, and was actually going to the range and working on things. So I am about a quarter way through a big bucket, and Range Pro comes up and stands behind me. Mind you, I have my earphones in, and I'm thinking he'll notice and just go away. But in between changing clubs, he nudges me, and asks, "So, what are you working on?" I tell him point blank, just trying to get better. He shakes his head and grabs a club out of my bag and starts air swinging and telling me telling me how I need to get the club more to the inside and what not. I shake my head, and get up and start swinging again, changing nothing. I proceeded to strip my 8i, with the exact same swing, and he's watching and nodding. He leaves, and I think he's gone for good. He comes back over with a one of those Pool Fun Noodles, and puts it down and says swing on that line. I look over at him like he's crazy, so with a chuckle, I hit a few more, not hitting the Noodle or anything, hitting them just the way I was before, right down the middle. He then tells me about grip and this and that. Then asks me how my wedge game is, and I tell him its solid, just staying humble about it. Pulls two range balls out of his pocket and tells me to pitch a couple over onto the chipping green that's around 50 yards from where we were, First one 20 feet from the pin, and second one i decided to mess with him and hit a lil punch up to it and tucked it inside 10 feet. Worst part about it, was he was in a walking boot for a broken foot. Had a couple clubs with him and later on I watched him, and he was hitting them left and right, and nothing was ever the same. But he sure wanted to show me and help me.

The best one is the one who will sit at the range and just pound driver and he catches one clean and it gets out to about 200 yards, and he looks around to see if anyone caught him hitting a solid one. I go through my whole bag and 'ol boy will just be pounding driver after driver.

I will always just try to have my ear phones in and go through my bag, working on things, and just keep to my self. I am self taught, and work on a few things here and there. But lately the range is the only chance I can get to hit balls lately. Hopefully, that will change. But I am sure I will get some new stories, since I moved and there is an older range by my new house.

 • 2 weeks later...

Not on a range, but on a course...

About 4 years ago, we were visiting our old neighbors from NC after they had moved up to IN. My buddy tells me to bring my sticks and we'll go out and play 18. My buddy is pretty good, in the 6-8 hdcp range, and I was terrible back then (not that I'm any good now, but better than I was then). I would shoot in the 110-120 range then.

The course was relatively empty for a July Saturday afternoon. We tee off on 1 by ourselves, and have a good time playing, catching up on the past few years, and having a few beers. We make the turn and there's no one pushing us and someone is about 2 holes in front of us. On 12 we start catching up that dude in front of us. It's no big deal, as we weren't in a rush. So we'd wait for him to hit his shot, get out of sight, and we'd hit our shots. We did this on 13 and 14.

We get to the 15 tee box and he's waiting for us there. He says "I noticed y'all catching up with me the past few holes, so I figured I'd ask if you want to play last few holes with me." We say "sure", introduce ourselves, and tee off. At the time, we were in our late 30's. He is a young kid - we were thinking early 20's or so.

We play 15, and this dude is worse than I am - he's spraying everything to the left and to the right. It's ok, because we really didn't care either way. We finish out 15, and get to the 16 tee. He asks us what we do for a living, and we tell him. We ask him what he does, and he tells us he is in college and works a pt job waiting tables at a restaurant.

The school he was attending is known as an engineering school, and my buddy is an mechanical engineer, so he says "what do you want to do when you graduate?". The kid looks at us and says "I want to play golf." Straight-faced, no emotions at all. My buddy says, "Yeah, we all want to play golf, but what do you want to do with your degree? What kind of job are you planning on pursuing?"

Again, straight-faced "Seriously, I want to play golf." Followed by "I'm gonna practice a lot over the next 2 years, and try to get on tour." The 2 holes we played with him, he shot about a 20. No lie. My buddy and I looked at each other and said "cool" and proceeded to the next hole.

We played the last 2 holes, and he probably carded another 8-10 for each hole. When we putted out 18, we shook hands, and my buddy said "good luck with golf, but plan on finishing and using your degree".

Hmmm....

It was nice of you guys to let him play along with you. He may well be in for a very rude awakening if that is indeed his plan. Its a 'maybe' - but he might have been one of those very dry witted and dead panned guys who just wanted to see your reaction. I know my attempts at sarcasm sometimes are taken seriously by others who had no idea I was kidding. On the chance he believes exactly what he told you.... That thread was already passionately debated not too long ago. That one taught me about live-and-let-live in real life vs the internet - LOL.

Not on the range, but on the course. There was a couple, neither of whom could play a lick, in our club. My group was on the 9th green which is about 50 yards from the 4th tee. Apparently, the husband was trying to give his wife a few tips, and she turned to him and yelled "will you just shut the f#@$ up!". None of my group could putt after that, so we just picked up.

A man and wife who are both local high school coaches both play and both come to the same range I do.

One day they laid their buckets down and the man tees a ball and tops it with a driver.

The woman said to him "you c___, I didn't come all the way here for you to embarrass me."

I rolled.

A dad forcing his 5 year old son to learn a pre-shot routine. Have seen him and his wife forcing the kid to hit balls almost daily for well over a year now. Most of their sessions turn to negotiations where Jr is trying to get done sooner so he can get off the range.
That's just sad. Probably will make the kid hate the game. What are they trying to get him on tour to get their retirement secure?
That's exactly what happened to me. As a very young lad, my dad forced the game on me the worst way possible -- like he did with everything else in my life. He'd verbally abuse me in public for bad shots, make me swing til my hands were raw, and it just made golf feel like a punishment. After he left, I continued to hate the game of golf, until in recent years I discovered the beauty of the game on my own. Now golf is my mistress.

I can't stand when I see people let their frustration turn into uncontrollable anger show towards beginners. I know most wrx'rs were born with a 300yd carry, but normal beginners usually shoot scores that would make you proud on a bowling alley. Keep that in mind. We all had a friend/teacher who was patient with us during the humiliatingly bad stages. Pay it forward.

I never know what to say when someone shares a story of poor beginnings in golf at the hands of over-the-top dads. Genuinely feel kicked in the gut.

We once had dad post his son's video here on Wrx not long before the fall school season began. Mind you this youngster had some issues with his swing... nothing that couldn't be managed. The point being this father and son looked inside our WRX "community" for a boost. This kid couldn't have been much beyond his early teen years....that age when kids can be mortally brutal on each other. and here he stands on public display about to head back to school. For all I know the kid was thinking about trying about school golf try-outs....who knows about that one.

The virtual online whipping this kid got about his swing was something I'll never forget. Caused a fellow member on WRX to blast me to hades and back for trying to boost the young man's morale and be encouraging to him.

Could be argued dad should never have put his son out there like that knowing how harsh online comments can be. Personally, I saw it as a dad trying to find something out there which "could" extend their bond. For all we know that kid's dad just couldn't pony up for lessons at this point. What we do know is he started school within days of a public beat down stating his swing is a total train wreck.

I still think about that young man and his dad quite often.

...Always hope both are closer to each other and golf than ever. Hate it that myself and another WRX-er had such words over it, Sad on so many levels. My bet is father/son are just fine. Sounded like they also enjoyed fishing together and had quite a bond despite what may have happened over those few days online. Some little things are easier to forget but those two linger in my mind to this day.
