There may have been more to it then just cleaning the club face. He may have been monitoring where each shot made contact on the face of the club, to see how consistant he actually was.
Nah, he wasn't checking his clubface when cleaning it. Nor was he using impact tape.

It was me. Gotta keep the clubs nice so when you sell or trade them you maximize your ROI.

Emulating time taken between shots so it forces him not to go to quick and take his time?

 • 4 weeks later...

Not that anyone really said anything humorous but I was at a small range by my house yesterday and as I walked in to get another bucket I turned around to look at my station and noticed of the 10 or so people on the range 7had staff bags (plus my Titleist staff stand bag), iron covers or both and everyone looked like it was the opening round of the masters. All I could think is poseurs, all of us, just poseurs.

i saw a teacher having their student hit balls while facing 180 degrees away from the ball.
You mean like facing forward and the ball is next to them?
That would be 90* no? Maybe the kid had such a bad slice he needed to hit the opposite direction (180*) to get it anywhere?

My 3 year old son likes to go to range with me. Last week, I took him and had a fella behind me hitting even before we got there. Let me remind everyone, my son is 3, loves golf and hitting balls, and he's loud. So of course he's giving a play by play on his shots, my shots, and everyone else's shots. The guy behind me told his friend, but loud enough for me to hear, "this is why children shouldn't be allowed at a driving range or golf course bc I can't concentrate and hit the ball." I kindly turned around and told him I had watched him hit 25 balls before I came over here and he'd only hit 2 decent so I don't think my son was the problem with his game. He then called me a sob to which I challenged him and his friend to a match against me and my son for $100 a hole. They left. That's probably the worst thing I've ever heard bc I love seeing kids playing golf.
Another good one I've heard "they must inject the balls with something bc I'm at least 40 yards longer with my ball."

A guy today saids a SW shoulds go 130 yards. He took five ridiculous swings , all fat. The last one was some swing for fences power-less fade. Turns to friend ands says , *yea , it works.* It floated down just before 100 yard sign. Every swings was JB Holmes style backswings ands fall backwards *fade*. *Where is that on the course.* What angers me is such bad mechanics , yet muscled pretty good outs there on decent attempts. I wish i coulds steal guy strength.

I live in a small rual area so I do not get anything like most of the posts here. However last week was one that I had a hard time from breaking out laughing. I am at one end of the range hitting two buckets. I am about thru with the 1st one when 3 guys arrive at the other end of the range with a bucket each. Within about a dozen balls they are all hitting drivers. Two might make it past a 100yrds & one can make it past 150 the majority of the time. They are all firing shots as fast as they can.

Shortly the "long hitter" is telling the other two that the way to tell if they hit the ball correctly is that the tee either stays in the ground or ends up just behind where the ball was teed at. The rest of their balls were all hit while the "tee master" was watching their tees to see where it went. One of the two does get one past 150 which creates some excitement. The tee master's 1st words are, "look--the tee is still in the ground!".

I know we were all there at one time, but still smile when thinking about this one.

We have a guy that shows up occasionally at the public range near our house that we affectionately call “English Bob.”
He looks likes the character from the movie, “Unforgiven.”

Anyway, he targets a novice and then moves in to offer advice. He ends up hitting half of the guy’s bucket “demonstrating” the proper golf swing. I must admit he can hit the ball but his explanation of the swing is a bit unusual. He speaks only of shaft angle. He has one of the phlegmy coughs and wears those patterned pants that resemble pajamas.

The course I live near has a water range. So I go there the other afternoon about 2.5 hours before sunset and get a large bucket. Head to the range and am maybe 10 balls in when an employee drives right up to me on the range and tells me the range is closed because they need to pick uP, as I am standing over my pile of balls. After a little conversation where I state the obvious, he replies "you can finish your bucket, but you gotta be quick" then proceeds to sit in his cart 10 feet to the side of me in my eye line watching me finish the bucket. Hit my Last ball and as soon as it leaves the club face he drives out into the middle of the range.

If anyone reads the florida travel forum, this course has a pretty poor reputation when it comes to customer service and I have seen my fair share of issues and this was my last straw. With so many courses and ranges in Orlando I have started going somewhere else.

This guy has apparently found a way to never pay for range balls.

I'm not crazy about kids at the range either -- not so much for the racket they make, but if they're not being watched well enough, and start running around, on the wrong side of the yellow line, (I've seen it plenty of times). I'm sure you'er not the problem, but some people bring their kids, and just ignore them. Its stressfull for the people near you b/c no one wants to accidently hit them in the back/downswing. :(

I remember once when I was about 5 or 6, hanging out with my dad on the range, someone came up to my dad and asked him what his handicap was. He pointed at me and said, "Him".. :)

There are a lot of cases of parents not watching their kids on the range. Last Sunday, in fact, I moved several spaces down the range because a totally clueless family was letting their kids run all over.

It's not always a case of parents not supervising their kids, though it often is. Once, when my son was about 8 or so (He's 28 now), we were sharing a spot on the range out at Westlake GC near L.A. (My home course). It so happened that Kelsey Grammer was there with his kids in the next spot over from us. My son, not knowing any better, whiffed a shot which trickled about five feet and in front of Grammer who was about to hit. My son ran out to retrieve the ball. It all happened so fast, there was nothing I could have done. I apologized profusely and Grammer was very nice and said, "Don't worry about it, my kids have done the same thing."

I was at the range the other day and a guy was showing off his new Muira Baby Blades so I started eavesdropping...he told the guy next to him that all pro's play muira irons, they just stamp other manufacturer's logos on them. He did offer to let me hit them though so that was cool of him. I just kept my mouth shut during his soapbox moment.

OMG, anybody that can't concentrate on the range with all the stuff going on in the first place, let alone kids, will NEVER be a good golfer. You have people walking behind you, talking, laughing, etc. It is the only "acceptable" place in golf to talk during someone's swing. I chuckle every time I see kid's antics on the range and wish I could be like them and not care how I hit the ball. They all just want to hit the ball.

Why I take him. Sometimes I find myself getting to technical in my swing. I just give him a small bucket and let him whack away while I watch. Helps me remember why I fell in love with golf and gets me back on track.

Heard a guy brag about his "tour issued" RBZ driver that his buddy got for him from the Ryder Cup here in Chicago. He said his friend had it custom built on the tour van at the Ryder Cup. I took a look at it and called him out on it when I didn't see a T-serial number or the + on the hosel...Needless to say he was one unhappy man to be called out on his BS.

A group of newcomers to the game were hacking away at a bucket of balls when suddenly the sounds turned to silence. I continued hitting little 3/4 wedges to the 100 yard pin. One of the group said to the others, "watch that old pro down at the end of the range." I looked around and realized they were talking about me.
NOW THTS FUNNY. Just goes to show its all a matter of perspective.

Yesterday it was busy at the range, I ussualy go to the end where no on else is so I can focus. There were only a couple spots so me and my wife got stuck beside some real classy guys. One of them had a cigarette in his mouth while he was calling out all his shots. He had 6 balls tee'd up at a time and just smashed through them, he's like oh yeah that went 175 with a pitching wedge, oh that drive was at least 320.......then his wife called and you could tell she was complaining, he told her to pick up a vacuum and get dinner ready. My wife was not impressed.

I'm the only one hitting in the grass section, everyone else is hitting from the mats.

Guy comes over and sets up. About his second ball in it goes something like this.

Me: hitting

Guy: hey, hey! Can you hold on for a second?

Me: yeah.....

Guy: walks about fifteen yards out and picks up his iron, turns back at me and looks at the grip and says " must have some sort of grease on it"

I was at the range a few months back with my wife and had a guy and his girlfriend come down towards us at the far end of the range and setup. The guy grabbed his driver and started hitting, he was very sporadic, shots going everywhere. His girlfriend asked him why the ball wasn't going straight and he started screaming at her telling her to "shutup, because she doesnt know anything about golf". He proceeded to re-assure himself after each mishit that this never happens. He kept yelling "I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, I usually hit it straight down the middle every time" and smashed his way through a bucket of balls very quickly. It was pretty ridiculous, he occasionally slammed his club down and made ignorant remarks to the girl with him. If I were her, I would have called a cab and left. What made it much better is my wife was blasting her drives straight down the middle and he was obviously getting more frustrated after watching her hit (she ranges between 4-8 handicap and hits quite long).
