Do I look like I work here? ......

So I was at my local GS today picking up my driver that had a rattle in the head from some loose opoxy. Still under warranty so no big deal. I frequent the store often as well as another large golf specialty store in the area. I have come to notice my normal work attire is far to close to the dress codes of both stores and almost every trip I get asked questions by customers who assume I work there.

Funny thing is I never tell anyone that I don't unless it's something I cannot answer. Today as I was waiting for my club, I had a 20 minute conversation on the new speed blade clubs vs rocketbladez and rocketballs, and finally the guy asked, "do you have these in stock?" When I told him I didn't work there he was embarrassed and his wife laughed and said she new I was just a customer too. To add to it I think the real employee was getting pissed and wondering what was going on.

The other store I visit and they mostly wear blue golf shirts and I made the mistake of wearing my blue nike polo to that store and had no less than 5 people in 20 minutes ask me stuff.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is it weird that I just enjoy talking to people ( I am in sales anyway so it's pretty much what I do most of my day) and let people think I actually work there? I swear if it paid the bills I would love working in golf retail.

So "Do I look like I work here?" ...... I guess most of the time I do.

I once had a shopping cart taken away from me from a guy at Target...he hurried up and mumbled something like, "I need one..." grabbed the end of the cart and began to hurry off. I looked down and realized I was wearing a red sweatshirt and blue jeans.....or maybe he was just an a-hole.

I once made the mistake (no idea why I was wearing this anyway) of walking into a Fry's Supermarket in my work clothes that day. White shirt with black dress slacks and a tie. I kid you not I was stopped no less than a dozen times in about 30 minutes.

Walked into BuyBuyBaby earlier this year wearing the same royal blue polo (no logo though) and khaki pants as all the employees are required to wear. Even had an employee mistake me for someone who worked there. My wife made it even more excruciating when she apparently wanted to spend 6 and a half hours in the store, finally snapping at me, "What is your PROBLEM? Why are you in such a rush to get out of here?!?!"

Edit: I do not exaggerate though, I am stopped by an elderly person probably once a month in the grocery store I frequent asking me where something is or some other question they would ask of an employee. And that seems to happen regardless of what clothes I'm wearing. Same thing has happened to me in Costco several times when I'm wearing a t-shirt and shorts.....95 year old lady usually, clearly retired but needing to be at Costco on a Saturday anyway...."Do you work here young man?"

Maybe I just look the part of a retail worker, maybe I just can't dress worth a flip. Who knows.

It's never happened to me in a golf store, but it has happened in multiple clothing stores. Sometimes I'm standing off to the side on my phone waiting for my girlfriend and someone comes up to me.

Some years ago, the Antiques Roadshow came to Pittsburgh, PA. The wife pestered me to take her to the Saturday session. We showed up with a few small antique items, my grandmother's gold lapel watch with a picture of her wearing it in about 1910, and a few other small pieces of silver items. Being stupid, I wore a navy blazer, khakis, white shirt and tie. I wanted to look good on TV.

When we got to the convention center, the line was so long that I told the wife we would never get anywhere near where they were filming. She insisted we stay. Five hours later, we were still standing in line. I decided during the wait that I would walk around, get soft drinks, etc, while my dearest stood patiently in line. As I walked around, I was repeatedly asked if I was an appraiser. Some lady asked if I was the pre Columbian art expert. For fun, I gave her my best "appraisal". A few more appraisals and I convinced the wife we would never see anyone from the show.

I really was tired when we got home, from driving, standing, and appraising. Funny, I think I gave relatively accurate appraisals. At least, I didn't insult anyone.

Khaki colors pants and blue polos is what I wear... I hate the regular crap I get as uniform shirts so I order a darker blue Nike Golf shirt with our logo on it... Much more subtle... I don't go into BestBuy in work gear...

After a night of drinking, we ended up at a coffee shop. It was an odd night to be out late but because the next day was a holiday, it seemed a lot of people had the same idea. The place was slammed. I guess they weren't expecting a crowd and our waitress apologized and mentioned two of the staff had walked out that night. Anyway, we were in there early enough to get seated and get some coffee. But the place immediately filled up and then the big wait. And wait. And wait... After about 45 minutes, we were commiserating with the folks at the table across from us, everyone wishing they could at least get a coffee refill. So I see the coffee machine and I finally get up and grab the pot and bring it back and pour refills at our table. Then I fill up the cups for the table across from us. We were all laughing, still being in a jolly mood having just closed the bar. I move down the line of tables pouring coffee refills for total strangers. I reach a table where this woman looks at me indignantly and barks "WELL IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! I NEED SOME SWEET AND LOW!"

I grabbed my crotch and said "I got your sweet and low!" (old Saturday Night Live reference)

My friends were howling, and as I walked away, I heard, "I don't think he works here..."

Saw a guy in a large retail store stuffing perfume in his pockets, and I mean at least 6 of them, right in front of his 2 young kids. He looks up at me, turns beat red and asks........."are you security?". I said yes, I wasn't really and he empties his pockets and walks off. Yep, he was caught by the real security as he left.

Happens to me all the time but it's when I go out to eat and not at golf stores.

Mostly when I go to Mexican food restaurants. I'll get up to walk to the bathroom and ill get asked for more chips and salsa about 10 times on my way there and back.
I'm Asian so I have no clue how people mistake me for being an employee or Hispanic. I could be wearing my golf clothes and ill still get asked for more chips and salsa or a refill.

I was wearing a solid blue polo and khakis, and went into Best Buy, I'm looking at laptops and i hear this woman voice ask, "sir, can you help me with something?" I turn around and its one of the hottest chicks I've seen since last wednesday. I say, "most definitely." I sold her a laptop, even walked her up to the register. Then it hit her, she says, "do you work here?" I say, "no, but Im still trying for the commission..." I get a confused look from the hottie......The register lady says, "i think he just asked u on a date...

That's funny. I have the exact opposite story. When I worked retail, we all had matching polo shirts that clearly said the name of the store on them along with our name tags. In those days I would let my hair grow to epic lengths so probably every other shift I would have someone come up to me asking if I actually worked there.

This sort of thing happens to me all the time. I'm 24, kindof got a baby face, and generally dress decent whenever I'm out and about.

I showed up at a hotel in Boston this past weekend, got out of my car for the valet, and the vallet starts handing me someone else's bags. Apparently he thought I was the driver for a couple that was leaving that evening.

Obviously not, or it would have made the story in a WRX renowned passive brag addition, hehe. :taunt:

You should have just put them in your car and drove off.

I get it all the time in golf shops. Since I frequent so many during my non-real work hours and have been doing it for over twenty years, I've gotten to know many of the workers pretty well where they call me when they have questions about used and "tour" clubs. When I'm at the shops and they can't answer a question about a club or usually a putter they point the customers in my direction. I've answered tons of questions and then have the guy ask me if he can pick up the club and I've had to lead them back to the real worker. The workers then have to explain to them that "he's from GolfWRX.com" and then the customers who've heard of us ask, "Are you the guy with the putters?? Do you really have that many???!!"

Just the other weekend at my local Miura dealer a guy started asking about Miura's because one of the workers told him I played the set he was interested in. After about fifteen minutes talking about them he mentioned to the shop guys he reads GolfWRX and was wondering who "Pitbull" was because he heard the guy was from Hawaii and was some kind of club nut with a ton of putters and the review he read about Miura's was written by him. I slipped out to the restroom. :D

A couple of years ago, decided to take my parents out for a nice dinner on their anniversary @ a very nice Italian restaurant. I decided to let my father park the car as I accompanied my mother in to check on table availability. We were told we would have about a thirty minute wait. As my father, who bears a striking resemblance to the actor John Lithgow, came in the door, the hostess immediately said ,"right this way,Mr. Lithgow, how many in your party?" My father noticed amused expression on my face and whispered " son, when someone mistakes you for someone they obviously like, go with it unless illegal or immoral".

I don't get stopped by unkown people very often. I do however get stopped by people that know me very well and know that I work at a golf course. I will be in the local Edwin Watts waiting for the manager to do some business, and some of these people who know me, will ask my opinion or my thoughts on certain equipment. I try to blow it off but they just keep asking and I almost feel obligated to tell them what the EW crew will not tell them...The Truth!

Short Stort:
I was in EW getting some grips for myself and while I was perusing the driver section I over heard the employee telling one guy how if he gets this $399 driver he will "gain 15 extra yards" over the $299 driver of the same model. He never once asked the guy how he plays or what he shoots. Knowing the guy, and how he plays, the $299 driver was plenty of club for him. Once the sales associate left I look at him and just start shaking my head, he sees me and asks what he should do. I tell him to go with the $299 driver and how it was just an upgraded shaft option to make up the extra hundred bucks. The sales associate come back and he looks him dead in the face and calls him a "*****" for trying to up-sell him for the hundred bucks. The buyer comes to my course the next day and asks if I can order that exact same driver he looked at the day before, because he wanted someone honest to buy from. I chuckled and placed the order, but I felt really bad doing so!
:sorry: to the EW sals guy
