What is Your Handicap and What is Hi and low (merged)

Recommended Posts

What is your handicap and what is your career low round? Also, how many strokes has your handicap varied over the course of a year from time to time? Example, if you are a 12 have you ever been a 9 or a 15?

What is your best through 9 holes?

There seems to be a debate on whether or not a 12 handicap could have been possibly +1 through 13 holes in a club tournament. Some guys do not think it is possible. I happen to believe it is possible.

Interested to see the results. Thanks

If you take his best 13 holes, then there's a good possibility it could be +1.
It's the OTHER 6 holes that kill the handicap.
(I do know it was the first 13, and there is still a chance that he got hot early, and if he finished, the final 6 would have "corrected" the total score. I mean there is a reason why he is a 12. It's called doubles and triples.)

I have been anywhere between 4-7, with a career low of -4 when I was a 6.

1 Handicap
68 During a Member/Member Tournament where you have to putt those 2 footers.

Best thru 9 holes was -5
Worst thru 9 holes was +10 (88 total round)

This year Ive been as high as a 4 and lowest currently (0.7)

Your scenario is very possible and happens all the time.

Now a 20 Handi shooting in the 70s is not likely.

I don't think just asking someone what their handicap is and then what their career low round is will tell the tale. If you were say a 5 when you played in school 20 years ago, but have been around a 15 for the last decade, I don't know that means you're still capable of playing to a 5 just because you were that good once in your life. Maybe the better question is how far under your handicap have you ever shot?

I put up a 13 over 83 once when I was an 18.5 index. I had been between maybe 17 and 24 over par on most of my rounds, and then busted out with a 13 over out of nowhere. Playing 10 strokes under your index is surely a very rare occurrence, but not impossible.

When I was a 16 (in the process of a swing change so haven't kept a handicap recently) my best round was a +5 78, shot +1 on the backside. It was just one of those days where everything came together. My handicap has always been high because I've struggled with a driver, but for that round I switched to a driving iron and everything just clicked.

Don't know if this will help you, but fluctuate between 3 and 4 and I've shot 68 twice.

I looked at our AGA tourney results from 2013, and we have 12 handicaps post 73, 74 and 75 for 18 holes...quite often. So I am sure +1 for 12 holes happens more than you would think.

I'm currently @ 4.8, started the season around six, rose to nearly 8 but have played much better since July. Lowest I've ever been was 4.5, also this year. The lowest I've ever shot is 70, three times and my low for 9 is -3 (twice). The first time I shot 70, I was around a 9, but made every putt I looked at. I think that is where those low scores that came out of nowhere can be explained. One putt pars and a couple of birdies that would normally be bogeys and pars can translate into a good round very quickly.

Current: 5.3
All-Time Low: 4.9 (in 2010)
All-Time Low Round: 71 (Even Par)
All-Time Low 9: 35 (-1, done this a few times)

During the round when I shot 71 I was -2 through 13 holes. At the time I was around a 6 index. Had I finished the round at -2 (69) it would have been like a +4 differential due to the difficulty of the course. I want to say the 71 was a +2.4 differential.

I could def. see a 12 handicap being +1 through 13 holes. In fact, I have played with a guy who did much the same. Was playing a match play event against a buddy who had a cap pretty similar to that. I was like -2 through 7 holes and 4 down. The guy was balling out. Ended up getting the match back to AS and eventually lost 1 dn as he kind of leveled out for the rest of the round.

Currently a 10.1 index. Career low was a even par 72, but it was on a short and open course. Next best score would be a 76, and I've done that at least 3-4 times (as recently as a couple months ago).

Lowest I've ever been in the past few years is a 9, highest about a 12. I normally shoot mid-to-low 80's, with the occasional low 90's round thrown in there for good measure.

14 and trending down. My best for 18 holes is a 81 I think but I play 18 only about 10% of the time if not less, I usually play 9.

My best score for 9 is an even par 35 and a couple of +1's. I can get pretty hot now and then.
I started playing more frequently and keeping a handicap about 1,5 years ago, so I have never been lower. I started this season as a 27 though. Goal for next season is reaching single digits.

-1 when I was a 7 (8 stroke differential)

+7 now that I am a 17 (10 stroke differential)

But every time I go out I'm sure it will be a -1 day! ;)

Obviously, a low handicapper is going to have a difficult time shooting a large differential. That's why GHIN establishes a handicap at 90% of your average 10 best of the last 20 rounds. The better player is justified in having an advantage.

I play with a guy that has a 34 and has beaten that by 12. Of course, he can be 15 over that on a given day.

Yep a 30+ handicapper 100 times more likely to beat his handicap by 10 than a 12 is.

Perhaps the details about how the probability was computed might clarify the mathematical reasoning. Statistics and probability are only as good as the data used. Let's see the math.

I don't agree or disagree with the premise. Just curious.

6 HC, never broken par. Best round (three times) is a 74 (par 72), on a 2 different long and difficult courses. Shorter, easier (by slope/rating) courses kill me. I don't get it, probably never will, but keep slugging. Whenever I need a great tee shot to try to go a little longer and make birdie I can count on "Sir Snap Hook" to visit. Frustrating. Part mental, part wrong driver shaft. Yeah, mostly mental.

Play around 8... Low round of 68.

Can see a hot streak but 13 holes... In Tournament conditions... Not likely..

I can see a 12 +1 through 13 on a Wednesday, local muni, easy pins, 6/7 stimp'd greens....

But Tourny setup....

Nope. Don't believe it... And probably won't change my mind regardless.

P.S. My low by the way.... Monday... Local Muni... Easy pins... 8 on the stimp..... No wind... 90*... With 3 par 4's around 360/370... That's how an 8 gets into the 60's.

The guy also had 5 holes left to play, which you seem to want to ignore. So let's say he plays those 2 over, which is more than reasonable, that puts his odds at 1200:1, but let's ignore that he played 13 holes and pretend he played 18.

How many guys is it going to take to chime in that it is more than reasonable, and they have either done it themselves or witnessed it?

Or he could have birdied those 5 holes and beat his index by 15 according to your logic.
