I'm a scratch , just turned 3 months ago. Low 18 was -1 , but many many rounds where I was under and finished even for the day . Short game is my goal this year, seeking a short game guru in the area . At a club event I witnessed a 18 handicapper shoot a true 80. That was his lowest score ever . Was all related to proper course management / good driving / and he converted 4 to 5 footers that day . A pleasure to watch. , and I know he will do it again. He is a true 18 on the way down , his work ethic to the game is unparalled . I tell him he will be a single digit handicap in a few seasons. , guaranteed .

not keeping an official one these days ( no reason to) but I play to around a 14 or maybe a 12 ( usually low 80s and the courses I play here) . I used to play to a 4 when much younger. My lowest round ever was a 69 at Kayak Point in Washington state almost 25 years ago.

I am currently a 5 handicap, 3rd year back to the game after 8 years away. My best was a 0 (for 2 years) at a par 72 rated 71 course. I can still shoot some fantastics even, one under rounds but I mostly shoot 74-79 on a par 72 rated at 73.5.

Best round ever 4 under (66) while playing a game at a new course with my folks. 8 par to start off and then dunked it in for birdie on our 9th hole (18th) and birdie the next 3 holes to finish with pars coming in. Best 9 holes is a 6 under 30 but I chocked on the back with a 39...hahahaha

Pre-surgery HCP of +2. Post-surgery I would say it is around a 5 now. Lowest round was 64 on Par 72 played from 6600 yds. I am SLOWLY getting back to actually swinging as good if not better than I ever have, so therefore excited to see IF my numbers start to come down sometime soon. Have a tourney on Thursday this week and will be first "competitive" round since Open qualifier a 2 years ago. YIKES!!

Channeling my inner champion now, so that by Thursday, she might show up!

Obviously there are handicap scenarios that won't fit this story but you can get an idea.
Chances are a 12 doesn't shoot a +1 through 12 holes, possible but under tourney pressure to respond with possibly your best round ever, tough to picture.
It is not crazy though. I would say it would be more likely in a casual round, lacking the pressure, and the focus on rules. 12 handicap for lack of a better way to say, means you should shoot around 12 over.
A hot start could propel you to that type of start, and still have them finish 7-8 over by the finish. So it is possible

and I finished last year as a 7, with a best score of 74(2over)twice, a best 9 of 1 under, same round as one of the 74's. a flipping 40-34 with 3- 3 putts.
2 of those were 3 putt pars.

Current index: 11.5
Index last few years: 10.9 - 15
Best round: 75 +3
Best 9: 35 -1
From my research, 3-4 under index is occasional , but 5-6 under is a lifetime low. I play better apparently . I shoot 79 +7 about 2-3 times a year. I think I choke a lot, keeping my index higher.

  • 2 weeks later...

Current index: 11.1
Index last few years: higher
Best round: 73 +1
Best 9: 32 -4
Lifetime low: 6-ish

I tend to play a lot of matchplay instead of strokes, as I play with lots of different handicaps. Ranging from scratch to somewhere around 24.

Slapping the ball around a bit, having loads of fun.

I'm a 3.6HC calculated by golf shot, working on an official GHIN at the moment.

I've shot 69 (-3) twice in my life and last year broke that record with a (64, -7). It was basically an out of body experience for me. I hit everything well and made just about all my putts. Now I know what a tour player feels like (for one day....). I was probably closer to a scratch in my HS playing days (10+ years ago) but the last 3 or so years I have picked it up again pretty heavily.

Don't have an official handicap anymore but summer of 2013 I was between a 4-5, now I'm closer to a 10 probably maybe even a 12. When I became AGM at my course little by little NY game started trending the opposite direction. The job took all my free time so whatever free time I do get I devote to my wife and kids. So I don't get to play or practice like I used too, but with that being said:

Best 18 70 (-2) 5 birdies 3 bogeys
Best 9 32 (-4) 4 birdies best feeling ever when score is not on your mind and you are just enjoying a round of golf with a great group of people.

I always want to score well, but I play purely bc I love the game. Not breaking 80 used to upset me but now its just enjoying being out on the course when I get the chance to be out there. Love this game :)

My index usually hovers somewhere between 3 and 5. Been as low as a 1.5 for a short stretch. My lifetime low round is a 2-under 70, which I've done 5 or 6 times. I've never broken 70, which I have to admit, drives me a little nuts, especially when I read about guys doing it with an 8 handicap. But I'm sure it'll happen some day. I once went out in 32 and shot 39 on the back 9. That was a frustrating day to be sure. But I played over 30 years before I had my first (and only) hole-in-one last year and I had started to think that was never going to happen, so I have a renewed optimism about shooting in the 60's. :-)

Currently a 3.4 Index. Lowest round I've had since keeping a handicap was a 1-under 70. I was 4-under on the front, and 3-over on the back.

I think I shot a 67 or 68 in a tournament in high school, but I honestly can't remember exactly. I am playing better (more consistent) golf now than I was back then. These days a bad round for me would be from 77-79. Back then a bad round would be 85-88. The mental game has gotten much better for me.

Currently +0.1. Lowest was summer of 2010 when I got it down to a +2.8. Best round would be a 66 on a par 72. I was playing with the head pro and general manager of the course. I lipped out a 20 footer on 18 to tie the course record.

I'm not sure I will ever get back to that level. Those were the days of college when I had the summers off to teach golf camp in the morning and play all afternoon.

I am currently a 13. I have shot 74 ( +3 ) at this level and that included my best 9 ever, a 32 (-4)
I haven't always been a 13. I spent many years as a mid single capper, my lowest being a 2, for about 4 years.
During that time, I shot 3 sub par rounds of 69.
The first time I broke 90 I shot 81 and finished with 3 straight doubles for that 81. The first time I broke 80, I shot 72, even par, with one bogey and one birdie. It took me two years to break 80 again.
Right now, I play in a league that is strictly by the rules. I'm playing off a 10 in it and in two years, on very difficult courses, I have been in the 70s twice, mid 80s twice and low to mid 90s 6 times.
Basically, I never know what game I'm bringing to the course on any given day, but I still believe there are many more 72s out there, just waiting for my A game to show up again.

+2 handicap. Was a+3.something right after college. Lowest ever round was a 60 at a very short par 70 course. It was during a huge money game against some some guys in county over from me. My partner birdied the last hole to close out the match so I just slapped at my 8 ft birdie putt for 59. (I actually didn't care about my 59 putt bc we had just won thousands.) I have to say again, the course was really short and not difficult at all. 63 is best tourney round. I have to say to those who don't play tournaments much. If you will start playing tourneys you will be amazed at how much it will help your game in time. You get tournament hardened so to speak and your mental game will get to a place you never dreamed of. Don't be discouraged at bad play in your first few tourney rounds. It takes a while to learn tournament golf. It's a whole new animal. Love this btw. Great folks and great info. Cheers
